Bryce Childress is an important piece to this class - he's from Trinity, he's had a great season as well - I've read "Illinois is getting a steal", "Childress is underrated" - I would welcome this kid back with open arms.

As far as McCray goes - I would love to have McCray - but Childress is the better get, IMO. McCray also rubbed me the wrong way begging for votes from the Illini and then de-committed the day after the vote. I wouldn't mind if he didn't come back - but I feel strongly about wanting Childress back.

Childress aint gonna be an Illini.

This is not the time for the staff to be too proud.

If it were a different position besides WR I’d agree. But I feel like we will be able to find serviceable replacements for these guys should they choose to go elsewhere.

We will still have Smalling, Stampley, and Davis next year. We should also get Edwin Carter back (he seemed to emerge as a potential contender). If Carmoni Green stays and improves his hands, we will be fine at WR.

If they have to, the coaches should recruit some replacements, even if they are lower ranked, and not sacrifice the “we give you time to decide, but when you do, we want you ALL IN mentality”.

Just my opinion of course.:thumb:

Yeah, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I just don't like telling a young kid making a huge decision that they cannot have any moments of doubt or we will walk away.

I get your point, but being a bit technical, it isn't a moment of doubt.
A moment of doubt, no one knows.
Making an announcement, everybody knows.
I'm not savvy enough on the whole recruiting thing to have a valid opinion on taking him back or not, but it is not just a moment of doubt, that's all I'm saying.

Are you saying Illini are not having him back or he has backed off his wanting to undo his decommittment?
Word is we have backed off. I don't have any information other than what I've read.

I hope the staff has identified some good under the radar gems for the remaining spots. Combing through senior year films. Will be interesting to see when offers go out/ how close to signing day since they lost a few targets when other schools realized the recruits picked up offers. Peterson (sp?) I know was one last year. Would be great to have a nice big weekend of officials dec 15-16, prevent another official visit before the signing day window.

Sure it is. Apparently this staff tells recruits not to commit until they are 100%. Well maybe he thinks he is, then once the excitement calms down he realizes, "hey maybe I'm not 100% yet and I'd like to look at other options. I'm still 90% sure I want to come, but you earlier told me to be 100%, so I'd like to follow your advice."

That is pretty much the definition of a moment of doubt. Now, is that what has happened in this case? I have no idea. But I think its a little harsh and unwise to simply drop a kid because he had a slight hesitation. The Alabama's of the world can do that. Illinois can't.

Backing off could simply mean letting him decide for himself instead of being "coaxed" back into committing.

I don't know anything about this recruit, nor do I know anything about college recruiting.

I lead large scale organizational change and transformation projects and I do know that making assessments of a program involves a series of different types of conversations (e.g., where would I fit, does it maximize my likelihood for results, what am I looking for, what are the pros of joining, what are the cons of joining, what would be expected of me, what are my other options etc.) than being committed to a program (What do I do to be successful, how can I improve myself to best fit the system, how do I better learn my role, etc.).

I can say unequivocally, that a person that engages in the first set of conversations after they have already committed and begun participating in the second set of conversations (am I sure I want to be here, maybe I made the wrong choice) are almost certain to fail and/or bring those conversations to others in the system. Usually, those people are fired immediately.

I can't say what happened with Childress (or that I would do the same thing) and I don't know about college football recruiting. I can say, unequivocally that when I lead change events, I am very sensitive to fragility of the new culture and identity and I would ask people to leave if they gave their word to me on being committed to the change and then went back on their word or called into question their word publicly. It is different for an employee to come to me (or another change agent) privately and express concern, discontent, and allow me to impact that conversation. It is a different thing to take the conversation public.

I can't say what I would have done in the context of Football, but I know what I would have done in the context of a business.

Yes but it is complete speculation. I'm just guessing that coach Patterson knowing those kids he could have just told him that we are gonna give you some space to let you figure this out. We want you here but only if you are 100% sure. I mean who wants to ask a girl to prom just to be left out to dry at the last moment. Why is this simple strategy by the staff gotta be twisted around by so many folks?

TLDR. So did you or didn't you stay at a Holiday Inn Express?

so basically you just wanted to tell everybody what you do for a living?

Hes decided for himself. It's Toledo. We've moved on.

Not the end of the world. Hopefully we have a good shot getting Frenchie. He seemed pretty solid. Getting Okpala shows that there are more irons in the fire than just Trinity. I think Patterson was a stellar hire and he will only get better the longer he is a college coach. He seems very well received and respected in the whole St. Louis area. Glad he's on our side.

I think a lot of people relate to our team as a functioning team that just needs a few players and tweaks and will make it back to the top. I think Lovie is going an overhaul and from my non football professional opinion, I think it’s the right move to move past someone that is unsure. I basically made the same point with Dawkins and others that wanted to transfer out. lovie may not survive, but I think the person takes over will have something that can be tweaked to win

OL Jakai Clark told me today: I really like the interest level I get from Illinois. Also, the early playing time intrigues me. - Other offers from Arizona, Auburn, Louisville, Minnesota and West Virginia.
Will pick a college on Sunday 11/11/18
