Back door lob for the first bucket of the game. Hopefully this team continues to be fun to watch.

A lot to clean up. But for the opener, I'd rate it a solid A.

Finally Illini fun to watch again.
That game was everything you could have hoped for.
Great start.

So many signs of life for the program. Guard play is going to be good as advertised. Ayo is a legit 5 star talent. Georgi is going to be the guy that every other Big Ten fan base hates. Tevian looked sooooo much better than in the scrimage and just oozes potential star. AJ is going to be a huge piece this season and just is so solid on both ends. Damonte too is just solid and looks so much more confident attacking the basket hard off cuts.

The official double club:

Scoring:
Aaron :: 19
Ayo :: 18
Andres :: 16
Kipper :: 13
Trent :: 10

Rebounding:
Giorgi :: 10 (2 fouls, one of which was a tech for "jawing" (what is that?))

Yeah, at least 6 players in double figures. Again, defense gave up too many open looks from 3, but that’s fixable. Giorgi looked great in the middle and defenders were just bouncing off him trying to follow the cutting guards.

Did what we were supposed to do. Definitely a step in the right direction after the exhibition. We’re gonna run out some small lineups. Gotta be able to maintain 3p efficiency and play fast.

Evansville were in game 1 of a new coach and system, lacking in the size most teams will have and try to exploit us with, and played absolutely terribly, but all of that said it was a cakewalk to a surprising degree. They just fell to pieces from our defensive pressure.

So you don't want to draw too many conclusions, but the only conclusions to draw were positive.

Ayo is awesome. Complete, mature, like he's playing the game on a slower speed.

Plenty of walk-on time but nothing for Kane or Griffin. Message sent perhaps?

Tevian as a center is interesting. His athleticism jumps off the screen, in the absence of true bigs who know what they're doing maybe you default to that?

A quiet night from Trent, and yet, 7 assists 0 turnovers.

Giorgi is...wow. That's a lot. If he can channel it he'll be the troll god of the Big Ten.

Ayo still figuring out what a good shot is and when to drive. Both issues of forcing action. Not worried, very smart player he will grow fast.

His size and soft skills often too much. Will allow him to shoot, pass, drive when others can't. Best freshmen since Dee/Deron, may have greater impact on this team.

Tev, same as Ayo figuring out speed and talent level. Wouldn't be surprised if he ends up at 6-8. Also oozes with natural talent. Both him and Ayo going to be much better at years end and next year.

We're going to be much harder to defend this year

Ayo - A+
Trent - A+
AJ - A+
Feliz - B (turnovers unforced)
Jones - B (came on late, athleticism is on display)
Giorgi - B (rebounding was huge, have fun, dont show up a ref)
DaMonte - B (drives well, need more of them-rebounding good)
Kipper - C (Pedestrian, really we will need more from him)

8 players making major contributions and strides to right the Illini ship...overall C grade against an vastly inferior team. Now if we do this against Georgetown, then it will be time to maybe sit up and take more notice...Great Win, Expected Outcome, Awesome to see new look ILLINI!

Message to Griffin: "We are going to sit you tonight so you can get healthy for the upcoming schedule." ;)
