Georgetown 88, Illinois 80 POSTGAME

Blaming Kipper is ridiculous. Dude battled inside with bigger guys all night. Everyone had good moments and bad moments. Actually, I take that back. AJ did nothing.

Can someone please explain our defensive strategy? It appears to be, collapse to the ball when it enters the paint and leave your man open for the dunk. Over and over again.

Same as last year. Hope to god for a turnover. If that doesn’t happen give up a wide open bucket at the rim and hope to god they miss that.

Of course we lose a game we need without our best player. Just our luck. Watch this game haunt us come March.

It won't. It won't matter one bit. This is an extraordinarily young team that is going to be playing a very difficult schedule. My guess is we're going to see 5 or 6 non-conference losses this year, in various ways. Tonight, they didn't close the game out. Had to kind of expect that when Frazier was ruled out.

They are fun, they look athletic, but it's going to take some time for these pieces to fit together.

Like someone else said....learn from it and move on the the next one.

Tevian needs to get a bulk of Kipper’s minutes in the non conference. To have a player like Kipper that only shows up once every few games is cancerous to a team with this much young talent and effort. He didn’t lose the game by himself, but for him to perform in the final 7 minutes like he did, with his talent and the amount of minutes he has played for us, just shows a lack of mental focus and toughness. I never want to question any of these athletes’ passion and effort, but he has WAY too much ability to continuously have performances like this. If I am BU I give him Maui and then show him the pine if it doesn’t change. Unfortunate

Really missed Trent’s clutchness down the stretch. Last couple minutes = complete dud ending to a very entertaining game. Patrick Ewing looks like he’s been over-inflated and could burst at any moment.

Trent and Ayo are both great pieces. Giorgy might end up being quite good. Aside from that, we need to add/develop a LOT. If we see significant development from our group of freshmen and sophomores this year, I'll be happy. That will give me some reason for hope that even if we're getting a fair number of 3* recruits in the next year or two, Underwood will be able to make something of it.

It may be a hasty reaction, but I agree with others, I would like to see TJ and AG take up more of KN’s minutes. Maybe getting Adonis in game shape will allow some of that.

Pressure the ball and create turnovers. Have a great rim protector or two at the back to clean up the mess.

We have the former, we do not have the latter.

We also don’t seem to have a very deep defensive rotation. I mean one guy will rotate to help but, no one else rotates to take away the easy drop off. We give up way too many of those on penetration.

This one isn't on Kipper. He made some mistakes but they got waaaaaay too many points in the paint as evidenced by their bench points. Aaron Jordan has got to find a way to step it up against high major competition as well. Georgetown is going places so long as Akinjo stays healthy. The point is they made shots right when necessary. One of their guys went 3-3 from three and they got way too many pivotal offensive boards.

I don't want to hear it. Nothing is different until we win basketball games, period.

Okay, well, you don’t have a choice:

1) Rebuilds take time, and it’s the beginning of year two.

2) Ayo is just going to get better, and Feliz and Giorgi have been awesome surprises, now against legit competition.

3) We win with - wait for it - our best player and leader.

Look, guys, I’m an Illini fan; I’ve been on the same emotional rollercoaster as you guys have the past several years ... and I’m upset we lost. However, to act like we haven’t taken strides forward as a program is absurd and, frankly, emotionally driven thinking void of logic in the wake of a tough loss. We’ll be fine.

Let’s get Trent healthy and give it our all in Maui.

We lost because we couldn’t make shots. Cant have AJ, Kipper and Feliz all shooting blanks from 3 in a game where Trent doesn’t play.

I’d also like to see Underwood back the ball pressure off in certain situations. I like our ability to speed teams up, but late in the game when we’re short-handed and exhausted, I’d rather force a team to make a jump shot then give them the chance to get into the lane.

All in all it was an exciting game. Love the fact that we got so many points at the rim and in transition on a night when the shots weren’t falling. I expect a tough season record wise, but I really do think the core is in place to build into next year.

Kipper's mistakes were glaring and late in the game, hence the hate. He didn't have a good 2nd half. If he finishes the fast break to take the lead....who knows what happens.
Everything else is what we thought- still are going to give up too many easy baskets and don't have anyone to alter those attempts.
But, man. Lost without our best player, our veterans didn't play well offensively and we shoulda won the game. As bad as the last 4 minutes were, I'm quite encouraged. We may get our butt handed to us by Gonzaga. But we are really fun to watch.

1 for 2 on free throws. 0 for 4 on field goals. Played 23 minutes, so not much to show.
He played some serious defense, rebounded and banged against theirs bigs when him and DaMonte were needed to step up against bigger players. They were routinely matched up against 6-6 or taller in Leblanc and Mourning.

May not have been a glorified stat sheet, but they did their part. If your looking for an omission from a box score, it won't show up...missed layup/missed 3/turnover/blocking foul on floater....a very bad 2-3 minute stretch for an experienced player we need is the omission.

It’s clear neither one of you know what you’re talking about or what you’re watching. This team is playing it’s second real game together without our best player on the floor.
It's clear you have no idea what a functional good defense looks like. It's the same as it was last year.

4 or 5 wins in the B1G. If that's your idea of better in the long run.

Anybody that thinks we don't need a solid Kipper making smart plays is clueless.

The “making smart plays” part is the question. You’re right in that we do need him if he can do that...if.
