Our team is bad, but the announcer is/was BRUTAL. Had next to nothing to say about the actual game on the floor. Was in his own world 95% of the time.
There was not much to say about the actual game. I watched the whole thing. Bad basketball.

I agree on Giorgi. He needs to be more active. Seems like he is overly sensitive about not fouling and gives up position for rebounds. We were outrebounded 37 to 25 and gave up 57% FG. We didn't look hungry and didnt finish tournament well.

YES!!! That is the other thing I noticed.

Worst rebounding team I can remember here. Bigs are not athletic, but also don’t box out. And the bobbles, so many bobbles.

Defense, we just chase the ball allover the court. Always behind the ball movement and ends in wide open shots. And the zone we tried? Eek. Guys wide open everywhere.

The thing that scares me is we have nobody signed for 2019. And we desperately need front court help.

I switched over to Bradley game - they beat penn state and won their tourney - and missed us playing zone defense. Sounds like it didn’t work any better.

Clearly the natives are getting restless, but there remain some supporters here. To you I ask: What are the most compelling arguments you can make that would lead the natives to believe that BU is turning the program around? Not what could be based on ifs and buts, things that actually exist now.

I believe that the talent level and potential on the roster has definitely increased compared to last year. Underwood had his guys playing hard against Gonzaga and Georgetown (not as evident the last 2 Maui games). Transition, fast-paced basketball was fun to watch against Georgetown and Gonzaga. The Gonzaga game was a dog fight and they are probably the new #1 in the country... no chance we even give them a game with last year’s roster.

No coach is going to win with the front court we are putting out there. We are going to get absolutely crushed inside this year. We just don’t have the horses. Giorgi is promising but very raw. De la Rosa should not even be playing due to injury. Kane is evidently not playing... Kipper is not a 4. Tevian is also not a 4. Aaron Jordan is not a 4.

If Giorgi gets in foul trouble, we are toast.

The buck stops with Underwood completing the roster but the roster is not even close. Hopefully more experience plus adding January will put us in a better place next year. Even then, our bigs will need another year.

Did January sign his LOI?

You know, Walton is more of a side show than an analyst, but I will say this....

He provided more positive and hopeful commentary about the program than the program currently deserves. He gave BU a ton of PR. He comments are what kept these three games from being complete embarrassment.

Sounds like the recipe for a veeeery long re-build.

I'm looking at the final stats (yes, very hard to stomach) and I find this one hard to believe: Da'Monte Williams played 21 minutes, so a little over half the game, and did not take a shot, did not shoot a free throw, had 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Why in heaven's name was he even out there? In a game we ended up losing by only 9. Surely somebody on our roster could have been more productive with those minutes.

Wait, I think I just answered my own question. :(

If we still had John Groce, we would basically have Mizery's starting lineup - Tilmon, Pickett and Smith. Don't think I would trade.
Instead we have a nice bunch of Freshmen and Sophomores who are just learning the ropes, and on which we can build. We scared the crap out of No. 3 Gonzaga despite having very little experience on the court.
With only 4 returners and being only 5 games into the season, not sure how much proof we have one way or the other yet how this team is going to pan out ,so not sure what you expect.

Unfortunately, this is probably the case.

The only way it gets quicker is if Underwood gets some elite level forwards/centers. Someone like Khalil Whitney, EJ Liddell, Oscar Tshiebwe, or Francis Okoro would have been great.

My observations and suggestions.

Freshmen, soph are not seniors, so don't expect them to be, offense or defense. Team is not going to jell in 5 games.
Mich State plays tough first games, and often loses in order to be ready by end of season.

The team is tired from playing Gonzaga. Give them a few days of rest and catch their breath. And yes, they are tired!
These guys are going to profit from playing these games.

The offense uses lots of calories, is complex and ineffecient.
Play more zone, like Syracuse on defense to conserve energy. Mix it up to confuse the opposition.

Putting Kane next/at bucket at all times on defense. Giorgi on the other side or close will increase effectiveness of defense.
On offense, Kane on one side of bucket, Giorgi on the other side. However, if pulling them out will bring biggies out,
that may help guards drive.

Play 4 guards, but in pairs, substituting back and forth
to keep fresh legs. Don't go so far out to defend. Maybe put a 6' 5-7" at the top of the key on defense.

cheers

joe

I mentioned straining to see 16 wins in another thread today. Boy, was that a heady time.

I’m not sure I see 12, let alone 16.

This was a bad year for us to be in Maui. Just not enough experience and a stacked field. Though I’m not sure it would look much different in coming years.
