Both vastly superior to Fahey who is o-fer the conference.
I feel like Fahey had a far deeper hole to dig out of (as hard as that may be to believe). That team is performing vastly better than I think anyone expected, and she's getting very solid players in each year. 0 fer is never easy to take, but I truly believe the women's team is on the right trajectory with Fahey.

I do feel the arrow is starting to point back up a little in football, but I'm not sure I remember the arrow ever being lower in men's basketball.

Was your comment just a sort of "For What It's Worth" or do you actually believe that Fahey is floundering and won't make it at this level? Just curious...

As of now I am still a Lovie and Whitman believer. However, each day and each embarrassing basketball loss that goes by now is on Whitman. There is no justifying keeping BU beyond this season. His foundation is built over a sinkhole. More time is just going to make the situation even worse. Find the money, and send him packing.

When BU was hired what I had hoped for and expected was that Illinois would progressively get better....win some games that we weren't suppose to win or favored to win....bring in more talent....not necessarily make the ncaa the first 2 years...but make the nit the 2nd year, win a couple three games there....be a team that no one wanted to play come late February early March, especially at home....be the team that people would say...look out for Illinois in 2019-2020....none of these things have happened IMO....things need to get turned around very very soon

Teams? He only had one team, and he actually made adjustments with that OSU team that allowed them to make a run at the end of the season and make the NCAA tournament. Having Evans helped, yes, but they don't make the tourney without those adjustments. Underwood has failed to adjust here and if he doesn't then he will be looking for another job soon.

Here is the issue with that. It was well known/reported that the assistant coaches were the ones suggesting changing the defense at OSU and stopping the half court defense. They tried to get Underwood to bring the players back and cram the lane more since so many teams were getting layups. He finally caved in after losing something like 6-7 in a row. The coach that talked him into that is the head coach for Oklahoma State now. He also adjusted with what he had last year at Ok State and almost went to the tournament. I am thinking Underwood just can't adjust to his players.

Underwood has the rest of the season to show he can improve his results so far on the court and with recruits. Hopefully he will do that.

At this point I am worried we are going to fall into permanent irrelevance such as Rutgers and Penn St.

I've been an Illini fan since 2009 when I enrolled and we've gone through 7 coaches combined in football and men's basketball (Zook, Beckman, Cubit, Lovie; Weber, Groce, Underwood)...the total goes to 10 if you count women's basketball (Law, Bollant, Fahey). I can't remember a time when a coach wasn't on the hot seat, aside from the honeymoon period. I don't know if keeping Underwood is the right option, and I don't have a suggestion on what Whitman should do, but man I am so fatigued with coaching turnover.

Imo Underwood needs to follow the Lovie model through this season and offseason.

First and foremost keep your roster together as much as possible. Another high turnover offseason would be devastating

He really needs to land Kofi and maybe another high end talent. This roster needs additional talent upgrade

Pursue a couple high end Grad transfers. This team and program needs to start putting W's in the win column

So far, we've only been putting L's in the win column. ;)

If Underwood has another mass exodus, I don't know how he can survive it. We will be bad for the foreseeable future. If we can keep most of our guys and get them to be juniors or seniors we will improve even if we have the wrong coach/system in place.

LOL... I love you young guys... I've been an Illini fan since 1949, and I can only remember 2 or perhaps 3 times when a coach WASN'T on the hot seat.... LMAO....

I agree. If 3 or 4 guys clear out again it will be a disaster on a Pitt Stallings level.

And last week it was Mama Griffin ranting via Twitter and now the Frazier family kicking up their heels. Not good.

You're right... So is missing 17 free throws against Mizzou, and missing 18 layups against FAU... Can ANYBODY on this team make shots ????

Can't say I blame them. This sort of second-guessing is what you get when you have absolutely zero success to point to, and plenty of glaring failures.

If we weren't stuck with Underwood's contract, I would be considering a mid-season firing, which is rarely a good thing to do. Handing it over to an assistant is usually a last ditch effort to save the team's morale and bolster your chances of retaining people who aren't happy with the current coach, and might stay on board if you give them hope for a top-tier coaching change.

I'd love to know what each of the players is thinking now that so many folks around the program are becoming critical of direction things have gone, and the season is essentially a throw-away. I know coaches who can keep a team on track during a stretch like this and get them playing for pride and the personal challenge of getting better, making opposing teams respect us, etc., but I'm not sure we have that guy.

So help me out here. If we had played a typical Illinois non-con schedule and were 9-4 or 10-3 would this thread exist? Asking for a friend!;)

Imo yes it would. I feel like fans, particularly ones on this board are far more educated with advanced metrics like Ken Pom and Sagarin. There is no longer the ability to hide behind an inflated easy record.

Oh and then there is still Florida Atlantic, so you would have to squint pretty hard to get us to 9-4, 10-3 no matter how many cupcakes

Nope, because they’re all playing way too tight. Wonder why that is.

This is very true of SOME of us.

I think the board would probably be pretty bitter and ugly in that scenario, whereas there really isn't any disagreement currently.
