I met Paul Powell a few years before that. Isn't he that one that eventually died in a Springfield hotel, and when they checked his room, they found shoeboxes stuffed full of cash?

The Old Saint Nick, right across from Amrak station.

You forgot the bar I worked in, Second Chance, owned by the Chances R guys. Head East played there on Sunday nights...to tie it in, all of our bouncers were Illini football players. ;)

Class of 1975. Also grew up in the area. What was across the street from 2nd Chance? A few more: Dan Fogelberg at the Red Herring. Various acts at Panama Reds. Also, the tavern with cheap beer on tap that served codfish sandwiches on friday? The bar over by discount records that served watered down beer if you had a student ID?

My best football memory was Dad's Day September 22, 1990 with my oldest daughter, when Howard Griffith had a big day against SIU. Best basketball memory is with my parents on December 4 1964 at the building then known as the Assembly Hall.

Landau Place apartments were across the street from Second Chance. Not sure on the others...

Boni's? Across from Second Chance on S. Sixth Street?

Yep. Bonaparte's. Opened up sometime after I graduated. Went there a couple of times. Nothing special. Didn't last long. Place that sold the fish sandwiches was The Deluxe. Good bar with pool table or two as I remember.

Agreed. Went to the Brown Jug once. The brand new wood and stone Second Chance (red shag carpeting and beautiful oak & mirrors back bar that won the Pabst Blue Ribbon in the 1890’s World’s Fair in Chicago) was built to give the one year old Dooleys (green shag carpeting) some competition. Sadly, it also burned down about 6? years later. Ironically, Firehaus, newly gone, was built in its spot. Dooleys had been renovated from the original KAMS. Stan’s Gridiron became the new KAMS (its current location which included buying out/remodeling to include the little shoe store in between). True story: my senior year in high school, I was able to buy a pitcher of beer in the basement of KAMS. Sitting in a wooden booth with spray paint graffiti on cement walls surrounding me, with three other real youngsters, I heard a huge crash. Turns out Vito Santini from Rockford (Illini football player) had thrown his pitcher of beer against the wall. It was 3 o’clock on a spring afternoon in 1970. That was my welcome initiation into the University of Illinois.
:illinois:
Didn't Vito have to leave school after having some sort of run in with a student. Memory fails but something went on that caused his early departure.

Had no idea that Boni's real name was Bonaparte's. Yeah, nothing special, but pretty popular in 77/78. Loved their soft pretzels and cheese.

The Deluxe was very good.

Pretty sure that Second Chance had already burnt down by Fall of 77.

I was in the Second Chance one Friday evening in 1972 partying with some players from USC. They beat Illinois the next day 55-20.

I am talking 1956 to 1960 . basketball with Governor Vaugh, Mannie Jackson from Edwardsville (I believe the first black ballers in Illini history) wonderful players and great Illini. Timponies was across from Kams/Stan Wallace's gridiron.( Stan was an Illini football hero of the Rose bowl when we beat Stanford). The football coach was Ray Elliot. He was known for his inspirational half time speeches and teams that would have a terrific upset every year that would save his job!!!! His last name was actually Nusspickel so you can see why he used Elliot..... I have got several other memories but at 83 I need my rest, and a beer.........

Deluxe was replaced by Legends. Still do the fish sandwiches.

Yes - when I started college in 1981, you could get into Urbana bars at 18, champaign bars at 19, so all the freshman went to T-birds. free hot dogs on Fridays

Housing put me in Allen Hall (of the infamous Ground Zero, world's highest basement. FWIW, I was on the 3rd floor). T-Birds was our go to bar freshman year.

Yes The Deluxe. Bottled beer I think, not draft.

You need to be on the super old farts list, REO! I only remember Timpones from Neil and Green. Miss it for sure.

I don't know if students today realize what a truly great "community" and bar scene there was back in the day. Illinois bars were a big draw for students and young people in general from not only other state schools but out of state as well. I met girls in Dooleys from all over the place. Visisted campus last fall and it seems pretty sterile by comparison.

The first Illlini game I can remember attending was in (gulp!) 1952. Tommy O'Connell's passing destroyed Washington, 48-14.
