I disagree i don't think Garza would have scored 40. And since they've scored 300 points in the last 3 meetings i think giving Garza the chance to score 40 is worth a try. You know why Bohanon only got 4 shots, because Frazier was in his shirt all game. Yeah, he made 3 but i don't remember the circumstances whether any of the shots were transition. And i think Kane could have caused more problems for, Garza. I'm always bewildered by his minutes. Not that Giorgi hasn't played well he has. I'd give Kane and Giorgi some minutes on the floor together if this is all Nichols is going to contribute.
Kane actually caused some problems in there for garza - garza is really not a banger, rather a bumper to pivots around and then pretty much shoots the same shot time and time again - Kane is tall enough to upset that shot - wish he would have gotten more time.

I agree. In 8 minutes of play Kane registered all 3 Illinois blocks.

Not sure why Kipper is starting over AJ at this point. The minimal height and athletic advantage Kip gives us over AJ is immediately nullified when the ball goes into play.

When you lose by 20+ it is never on the refs, but TJ got whistled for 2 fouls that were absolute phantom and the ref was looking to call them. Especially the one in transition off the ball. Giorgi got mugged a couple times going up with offensive rebounds and no call. The hook and hold calls and reviews are ruining the college game. Ask Bilas and Dickie V. They will tell you.

Ayo is not ready for the NBA. Iowa completely contained him until they extended the lead and started to back off on D. He will be a dominant force next year with an improved midrange game, strength and better off the ball D. He lost his man at least 3 times today.

I would rather see Samba(5) and Giorgi(4) on the court at the same time than Kip/AJ(4) and Giorgi(5). Iowa completely took advantage of our necessity to double anytime the ball went into the lane. This is why they shot 71% from three. No matter how good your rotations, good teams will move the ball fast enough to find an open shooter when always forced to double two post plays. Welcome to the party Kofi.

Just hoping that the young guys keep improving, AJ stays healthy so he can finish his senior year the way he deserves(on the court), and we see more performance like we did against the Golphers and less like today’s.

Fellow Illini fan at Big Grove in Iowa City said 17 of 21 from three? That’s unbelievable. Maybe I’m just being defiant because I’m in my Illini gear in Iowa City out drinking, but I wouldn’t trade our spot for Iowa’s at all. We will be good next year, period. We have a bright future. Today was rough, but it’s a beatdown on the road vs. a ranked team; it’s really not that big of a deal. We will be back, and I felt good leaving the arena today knowing that. Oddly enough, today got me sold on Underwood’s vision. Have fun in Fran Purgatory, Hawkeyes, you’re at your ceiling.

Best Wisconsin, and keep this thing rolling. Go Illini.

Ayo is not ready....AJ gives us some consistancy in the lineup, Frazier is in a serious slump, Giorgi continues to play over his freshman age, Jones will be something if he can ever stay on the court, Kane gives us some defense, Griffin can give us some offense if he plays enough to play loose, Kipper is well, soon to be gone.

Most anticipated, underwhelming game in quite some time.

IMHO, the team needs, among other things, a defensive specialist. If my memory serves me right, that’s what Beilein did to improve Michigan’s team defense.

Not a good effort. I'm not sure what is happening with our players. One decent game then they disappear. I'm so frustrated with the fouling, refs look for a team that commits lazy fouls. You get a reputation. On the other hand for some reason if you are "aggressive", then you don't get called for fouls? At some point you have to find a line up to compete. A line up that scores, plays defense, understands the offense, grinds it out until the end or one that keeps me and every frustrated, foaming at the mouth Illini fan interested enough to keep watching.

Iowa owned the Illini last year for 3 out of 4 halves. They really use their length to great effect. Illinois should bridge the size gap next year.

Still all in! The team was still fighting with 3 min to go...4-5 pieces do not belong and 3-4 are still on bubble on whether they belong! Give it time because the cream is rising!

A team goal should be for us to have more than 5 guys attend the team banquet like last year.

I don't understand why Kipper is in at all. If the goal is to build something towards next year and forward, playing him is only going to stunt others growth.

I genuinely can't see AJ or anyone else starting over him playing worse.

Really didn’t understand the end of 1st half... Kane was in. Seemed to be doing ok. Giorgi was in foul trouble. Kane comes out and is replaced by Oladimeji? Not sure why Kane couldn’t finish the half. Delarosa out of the picture completely?

Good on you for being enthusiastic, but if we get rid of the 7-9 pieces that might not belong we'll have to start our own open tryouts thread.
I am just saying that to build a team like we all want, we need to subtract a few pieces and add a few more. It really isn’t that far away.
I finally see a culture and I have not seen that in 13 years!

Delarosa had the flu and did not make the trip.

The most frustrating thing about Kipper is that when he disappears he does so completely. Lots of guys have an off shooting night or uncharacteristic turnovers or something but they make up for it with solid defense and rebounding. When Kipper is on he looks great....when he’s bad he is reaallly bad!

The way the NBA is made up now I would not recommend Ayo leave unless he is top 10. Illinois will support Ayo's development more next year. Being a fringe 1st rounder may not guarantee you a spot on a team.

You then become a token that can be traded around, sometimes for a comparable player or comparable contact.

Ayo needs development on shooting and defense, and overall game understanding. Illinios is getting him there fast with style, coaching, playing time.

Delarosa was in Champaign.

Great defense...ugh, coupled w horrible refs...oh well

I’m just opening the thread - but this is not serious... is it? The refs were not great... but the defense was certainly anything but great

Not going to dwell on this one, but...far too many open looks. Credit to Iowa: they nailed their shots. But, c'mon. We could've made it more difficult for them. Our guards/wings sucked defensively. Hopefully, this will be a learning experience. Final thought: poor reffing, but this was the game for it.

just to put some things in perspective again..we have 1 top 40 player on this roster, a few guys around 100ish, and all of our 4/5’s weren’t anything special. Giorgi has outplayed his ranking, Ayo has been great the last few games besides yesterday... but Tev and Griffin can hardly stay on the floor, Samba has been about as expected, Higgs is likely redshirting, Kip was a former Tulane commit, Feliz has been about as expected, AJ has just been eh, Damonte is inconsistent...but saying all that, most of our guys are underclassmen and things like yesterday happen. They’ve been competitive in most of their games, and there’s potential. But they’re young and i hate to use that as an excuse but the reality of having a roster that’s young and unbalanced in terms of size and talent level is a good explanation of the Minnesota and Iowa game. They’ll get there, but don’t expect many more wins until next fall.

Illinois defense was all about, Bad Closeout + Lazy Post D + Insane Overplay=Open 3's.

When all of our wings do the same thing — drift into the lane and help even before the ball is passed to the post — then it's clearly a system issue, not just a player issue. Garza and Cook clearly took spots 1 and 2 on the scouting report. The combination of the Illini not having the post players to guard Iowa straight up, and Iowa making every open three (and several contested ones) is the reason for this result. It would have been closer if we had made our open shots, or had an offensive play or two that would generate open shots, or had players who could draw fouls on their posts and thus get them out of the game, or were simply playing at home (which is usually good for about seven points in the Big Ten), but none of those things happened last night. Some will get better next season, probably.
