With each new hire, I’m really questioning how much money he actually has for his staff. Every hire, outside of Rod Smith (and even he isn’t a super high salary coordinator), has been a very inexperienced coach that required a relatively low salary.

One silver lining explanation would be he's saving money for a big hire at a really key spot. But, it's hard to expect that with the current trajectory.

Will I be wowed by hiring Miles? No. Will I be that concerned, Not really. A lot of coaches hire their sons. It's not like he's hired him in as DC (at least I hope not). While I'm sure at least some found them a GA job under another coach for them to appear to work their way up, others probably didn't bother and just brought them under their wing.

Frank Beamer and Steve Spurrier hired their sons. So did Kirk Ferentz, Dennis Erickson, Joe Pa (actually lets not do anything he did)... I take it back DO NOT HIRE MILES SMITH!
All those other coaches sons played football.....and have spent time on other coaches staffs as well.

There are a lot of bonuses tied into contracts. Rod has a chance to make over a million with bonuses.

You don't hire your unqualified son in the throes of sub-.500 seasons. Maybe there's some leeway when your team is performing well and you have some cache, but Lovie doesn't have that luxury right now. Cubit barely got away with it, and people were still (rightfully) upset. This is much, much more egregious if it comes to fruition.

Cubit got away with it because everyone realized the administration put us in an unprecedented position and a near guaranteed coaching change was a year away. There was a lot more to be upset about than how an interim coach was filling out his 1-year staff. Other coaches do hire their sons but they usually have a combination of more experience and a more successful, stable program where coaches have earned the benefit of the doubt.

True but I believe he’s still making less than McGee was. Could be wrong though. Keeping Phair was also not cheap, as he was the DC the previous year. Every replacement thus far has been cheaper than the original.

About 150k less than McGee but I think over time he will end up making more.

I don't really understand why playing a little bit of college football before joining your father as a quality control guy makes you vastly more qualified then someone who didn't play college football before joining their father as a quality control guy but to each their own.

All got coaching jobs after their fathers retired or got jobs with someone else before joining their dads staff. If Lovie retired right now not 1 division 1 coach would hire Miles.

I don't deal in speculation, which is what this is. All the same if you do but I'm only interested in what I know and what I know is that Miles Smith's resume doesn't look any different to me than the resume's of about a dozen other son's of college coaches. As such, I'm puzzled as to why that point is being argued.

You missed the vital second part of that sentence that mentioned they all have previous football coaching experience. That's the rub for me.

But they don't/didn't. They have/had POST-working for dad experience but many of these got their first jobs on the staff of their father.

You don't think Lovie has enough connections to find him a role on somebody's staff in the NFL. Start as scouting assistant somewhere like Brian Ferentz did?
Kendal Briles first position was on his father's staff at Baylor... ok I give up, hiring Miles is a terrible idea.

Exactly. It is not unreasonable to expect a Big Ten position coach, at a Big Ten salary and level of play, to not require on-the-job training.

Is that because more than one Div. 1 coach would hire him?!?!

With as much smoke as there’s been about Miles, I’d say it’s a good sign that nothing has been announced. May be some second thoughts from those involved.

Here is my theory. Lovie and crew beta test all their decisions that have the potential to not be well received.

To do this they implanted a mole into a hive of loyal Illinois fans not afraid to speak their opinion.

That hive is Illinois Loyalty. The mole is illini0440. He gives us the possibly devisive news and the leaders watch to see what happens.

Using that formula, they now know Miles would not go over well with us fans.

Honestly for me that one hire would erode most of the optimism for Lovie's success. If he hires his totally unqualified son he either can't find a guy who wants to come on board or he doesn't care enough. He has a ton of money to go out and pay a really great coach, but decides to hire his kid? Would be a terrible look and I hope Whitman puts a stop to it. I just don't believe Lovie is that much of a genius that Miles is some diamond-in-the-rough find as a position coach. No one else would take him.

It doesn't mean any of those things. It means that he has faith in his son, or at least his ability to mold his son. I'm sure that Miles grew up in an environment where he spent considerable time watching film and understanding the defense. He is not a home run hire. He is also not a disaster hire. Plus if Illinois loses, with or without Miles, Lovie is looking for a new job.

Given the state of the program, the most important facet for a hire for next year is someone that can work with Lovie on his defensive schemes and appropriately develop them for college football. I don't know it is Miles is the worst candidate for this type of role. I am not saying he is the best, but I am not sure he is the worst.

Something people are missing with the Miles thing: if he doesn’t get the assistant coach position there’s still a 99.9% chance he’s on the staff doing nearly the same thing. Why waste a valuable coaching position on someone that will almost certainly be on your staff anyway? Grabbing a quality assistant and keeping Miles as a QC/GA is better than just keeping Miles and not adding another coach.

Beamer's kid: Worked at four different universities before working with his father.

Ferentz's kid: Worked full-time for the Patriots before joining Iowa.

Spurrier's kid: Coached under Stoops in late 90's - early 00's. I've seen a website listing him as the WR coach, others don't list a position.

Erickson's kid: Coached at New Mexico Highlands (D2) for three seasons (two as QBs coach, one as OC) before joining his father.

Paterno's kid: Coached at three different universities before working with his father.

All of them besides Shane Beamer are full-blown nepotism, but each of them has more coaching experience than Miles Smith and were semi-defensible.
