I recall people shrugging off the Ryan Cubit as OC hire. Like, "Whatever, it's Bill Cubit's offense, his son is just an extension of him." Last I heard, Ryan Cubit was working as a sales rep for an orthopedic medical device company. That's what I hate about these nepotism hires. It's just wasting space. You could have an experienced DC adding value and an experienced LB coach adding value but instead you squander those slots on redundancies: head coach, head coach as coordinator, head coach's doppelganger as assistant. It's one staff member for the price of three.
So Ryan Cubit might be available?

I am trying my best to find a positive in this. It is difficult. I don't know much about Coach Hudson or about Lovies son, but this is not a good imagine for the program. What also confuses me is Coach Smith saying that he was going to assist with the the LB group. Why hire a coach that doesn't give you an edge in recruiting. I know I am viewing this from the public side of things, but I would rather take a chance with another High School Head Coach similar to Coach Patterson. I get that guys like Coach Patterson aren't just hanging out waiting for a shot, but with our assistant coach budget we should be able to find someone with more experience.

The one positive I can find(ish) is with Coach Smith taking more of a role as defensive coordinator, he has more faith in Coach Rod handling the offense. People need to also remember Coach Smith was Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the Bears after Coach Rivera left. I know the situation is much different being a head coach and defensive coordinator in college than in the pros. We are at a very crucial point in player development and I am hoping that this coach hiring isn't going to hinder development.

I fully expect that Coach Smith to make a splash in hiring a Running Backs coach. I see the appeal in Nate Scheelhaase but I would like to go in a different direction. Tim Horton just was demoted and was given a new position at Auburn. I don't know much about the guy, but he has been running backs coach for some great running programs (Air Force, KSU, Arkansas-the Run DMC Hillis Felix Jones, and Auburn). He was also the recruiting coordinator in the South. Seems like a good chance to swoop in and see if he wants a fresh start. I know getting a running backs coach that was just recently demoted doesn't sound like a great idea, but I think adding a veteran coach to a young coaching staff wouldn't hurt.

When Smith took over as DC and head coach with the Bears it did not go well.

The announcement of him being DC and the 2 assistants he hired was a step back for the program.

Of course, there were also a lot of people upset with the hire, as well. I suppose this is one of the risks of hiring a coach nearing retirement. For Bill Cubit, it was obvious. He knew he was only going to be here for one year and no one was going to hire him anywhere else when the season was over. Why not put his son's interests ahead of the program's? It appears Lovie has a similar outlook.

I don't think it was the defense that was the downfall in Coach Smiths run with the Bears. They had a top 5 Defense twice after Coach Rivera left. Went to an NFC championship. Don't get me wrong, Coach deserved plenty of blame.

Also like I mentioned, I don't know anything about Coach Hudson. I also would imagine that Coach Kiffin isn't hiring someone who can't recruit and we need to keep recruiting Florida. Seems like this should work out. I also mentioned that I don't like the hire of Coach Smiths Son. We already have a limited experience defensive line coach. I don't get why Coach Smith felt the need to bring in another defensive coach with limited (saying it nicely) experience.

I have heard positive reviews of Hudson so far through sources on the staff. On the contrary, not so positive reviews on the nepotism hire based on last season's performance as interim coach.

We will all have our opinions on here, but the opinions of the current coaching staff is very important for the culture of the program.

I was on board with the Hudson hire. Not on board with the Miles Smith hire. That is really bad if the current coaching staff feels the same way.

Got to be Butkus. He's got pride in his alma mater and sees the nonsense that Lovie is turning this staff into and wouldn't want to be a part of that. He was the same way after his season under Beckman. He can sniff out that bull!!!!. With the OL improvement over the course of last season I'm sure he's on some short lists elsewhere.

expect more...

Wow, I really did not expect this from Lovie. The results may not have been there, but at least everything seemed to be done professionally. If he leads to a coaching exodus because he hired his son, he needs to be fired on the spot. Give Rod Smith the reins.

It's pretty wild that this board (obviously a combo of informed insiders and casual fans) can see this thing falling apart but JW doesn't or is too green to the position to intervene. But, damn. Talk about being handed an amazing opportunity at a relatively young age (AD at a B1G institution) and letting your first huge move just crumble and not have the balls to do anything.

JW hands are kind of tied at the moment.
