Some of the offseason discussions seemed like Lamer Stevens is kinda the type of player we were expecting Kipper to be like this year. Kip had some incredible performances last year....ohh how things have changed.

I can't even...

cut it to 5, get three straight stops and still down five.

Two of those refs are consistently bad. The one that called the blocking on Feliz when the PSU guys got the flagrant after review...that ref consistently looks like he is scared or doesn't know what he's doing. The one that was getting chewed on by underwood makes awful calls all the time. I don't think they are typically for or against a certain team, but he's incompetent.

On Giogi's take when he missed the layup he was hit in the head. Giorgi started playing tentative after some bad calls.

THis is as mad as I've been after a loss in a long time.

THE PSU players were on the bench laughing about the screw job we were getting during that video review. THe refs even tried to saythe basket was made.

We are not good enough to overcome an off game and also pathetic officiating.

Trent was largely a no show today. Ayo was for the first 30 minutes too.

In fact, for most of the game Feliz was the only guy playing decent. He was carrying us driving to the basket. Which is an indictment about how bad the offensive scheme is.
The scheme has looked light years improved this year over last, but today it did not. We definitely needed some adjustments to neutralize their size and ability to contest 95% of the shots we put up

Ya that guy was clearly referring to today when he said season and has an extremely short memory

Kipper Nichols, a redshirt junior who scored 27 points vs. no 6 Michigan State and had 31 points vs. Iowa in the BTT. His line today:
0 reb 0 points 0 assists

That’s mostly effort and want. PSU beat us to a pulp in that regard.
Nah, a lot of it’s luck. Credit to PSU for putting in the work, but when you just stick your hand up to get a piece of the ball on the offensive glass it doesn’t always go in the hoop. They got a lot of those bounces today.

Wish we hadn’t been so flat in the first half. I think we can get one back in the crypt if we don’t make that mistake again.

Kind of like Wisconson, this was there for the taking. We just didn't play well enough on offense or defense. Penn State is not better, but they are more athletic than we are and today they were tougher. We seemed tight most of the game, forcing situations instead of taking what was there. Should of gotten the ball inside to Giorgi more often, but he was pressing much of the game as well.

We are a lot better than we were, but we are several pieces away from a B10 contender. We need more, better athletes and more size than we have. Thank goodness for Feliz today. Without him we would have been run out of our own gym.

Why can’t some of those drives into the lane for circus shots end up as kick outs to AJ for three...I think he was 3-3 today and we made no effort to get him looks

In some ways, PSU conference season has been similar to ILL.

Like ILL, they got off to a terrible start in the conference.

Like ILL, they are winning games recently, including defeating Michigan (similar to ILL defeating Michigan State).

It is always disappointing to lose but it's not like the loss was to a bad team.

Every 50/50 ball they got. That's not by accident. It was all hustle from Penn State. Add in poor free throw shooting. Those things Illini have gotten beaten all year on. Trust me I'm not saying the Illini haven't gotten better they have. But same frustrations today that pp have complained about all year. Go Illini end this streak and start a new one.

Some of it is entirely by accident.

Not picking on anyone in particular, but there’s plenty of room for both “we could have played harder/better and won” and “we could have gotten a few more breaks/calls and won” to be true.

PSU was the better and more diligent team, but they got breaks at critical moments. Both can be true.

Underwood - “We we’re flat. That’s on me. I should have got them up for shoot around at 4:30, gotten their blood flowing. “.

I laughed.

We were flat. It’s strange but it’s understandable. I remember Henson talking about how hard it is to get a team up for an opponent you might view as weak. You can preach and preach but sometimes there’s nothing you can do. Maybe it will be a learning experience.

He is infuriating to say the least. I had the volume down and was listening on the radio. What was his take on the Feliz “foul” when took the bow? I’m guessing he wanted Feliz dq’d and maybe serve a two game suspension?

I don't even know b/c I had to leave the room for a second after I saw the reply. I think he said something about the fans reacting the way they did after seeing it on the big screen. Then when I came back in the room, it was announced foul on Feliz, basket counts (even though it didn't' go in), and that after our FTs, it would be PSU ball. I left the room again.

I don't know how the refs could watch that review and not think "Maybe Brad is right in being ticked off." It was an obvious joke, even to the PSU bench.

Would have liked to have seen more of Jones in this game. I think his length and athleticism would have helped. I know he makes some mistakes defensively but, he isn’t alone in that regard.

Summary:

1. Big 10 refs are what we thought they were (really clueless overall - none of them should be getting paid for their overall lack of understanding what was going on in the game - even AFTER a chance to replay) - but we lost that on our own lack of execution
2. Got to hit FTs boys - we seem so cavalier at the line
3. Giorgi and Ayo letting the attention go to their heads - too many forced plays by both today - Giorgi trying to dribble from the outside, Ayo trying to pull the comeback all on his own rather than relying on teammates (Trent had just hit a 3, AJ was also ready). I was concerned when Giorgi was in sunglasses (with the suit) on the way to the Wisconsin game.
4. No excuse for letting a team spread the court and take you off the dribble for an easy basket - we should have been packing the lane from the start - way too slow to adjust to that
5. Disappointing overall at home performance in front of a sellout crowd.

Those calls make absolutely no sense together. I don’t see how it can be a foul on Feliz and be a flagrant on the PSU player. Has to be one or the other. Counting the basket that didn’t go in made the whole thing more ridiculous.
