Brad Underwood talks to Werner about the off-season.

Notably...

Werner: So do you feel like everybody’s coming back?
HCBU: I feel great, yeah. Absolutely. They were all in workouts today.
Surprised this post isn’t getting more discussion. If true I think this is great for next year’s prospects.

Without having first hand knowledge of staff’s strategy, you can argue that this rebuild is going to plan if we retain everyone. As other posters mentioned the two biggest weaknesses was size and depth inside, and a productive 3. Kofi addresses the first, and an improved Alan, Tev, or new addition projects to address the second.

Record in the BIG was 1 game worse than OSU who earned a bid. Our non-con will be easier next year. We have a top-50 player joining the team at a position of the greatest weakness. If everyone else who was in the rotation this year returns, then personally, I can’t understand how people would expect any less than a berth. Is it a certainty no way, but expectation yes.

A lot of coach speak in that one sentence. What is he supposed to say, "Kane is still up in the air and for now Griffin is staying?"

A lot of skeptics here. I’m not in the know, but the fact that they are in workouts and not the portal indicates odds are they’re staying.
It at least indicates they haven’t decided to leave yet. For a couple, it may depend on who else is coming which we don’t know yet.

Sounded like dodging to me, just my opinion and also doesn't matter much to me, at this point.

"Do you feel everybody's coming back?" "I feel great"
"So does this mean no transfers?" "I feel great"
"What's the weather like today?" "I feel great"
"Who invented crop rotation?" "I feel great"

Thanks for the chuckle.

It's the kind of question a coach really can't answer, so I put that in the coach-speak category. At the same time, none of our key guys have bolted, which is a very good sign. Think of it this way, if 500 guys are already in the portal, and we have none, purely from a statistical view, we're in much better shape. That number has been a little over 700 the past couple years, so about 70% of the transfers have already left their school. There's concern on the forum that a couple guys are worried about playing time, and you just have to accept that --you need guys pushing each other for PT, so that's part of the deal. I personally wish Underwood gave out more PT to guys deeper on the bench, specifically to encourage and develop them, but I'm in no position to judge what's best in the long term.

Crossing my fingers that we "all feel great" come summer.

If everybody is in for the workouts...that is a very good sign. I'm not suggesting we are out of the woods, but we are not in the middle of the woods looking for cracker crumbs. There is a paved road leading directly to the clearing.

I feel like Underwood loves coachspeak. How many times has he called someone or something someone on our team does "elite" over the past 2 years? I really take most things he says with a grain of salt.

Edit: Also, that is not to say that other coaches don't do the same. They do.

He said absolutely. Is there a more definitive word?

I agree that it is a good sign... Which didn't seem possible when just a month ago so many were predicting half the team was ready to transfer out...

Here's the full quote as I understand it: "I feel great, yeah. Absolutely. They were all in workouts today." It's not a misquote, it just leaves a bunch out that explains the the 3 word quote you list. Maybe it would sound less like dodging if you listed he full answer?

Interesting and encouraging that he now talks about size being a weakness. Initially he said it wasn't a problem so he he is smart and learning. Hopefully that will carry over to him adjusting his defense. Also mentioned that the BIG was different than the Big12. Not sure what that meant but sounds like he recognizes changes in style may be necessary.

Agree with this. He talked last year and this off-season a lot about always being smaller and being okay with that. He is adjusting and that is good. There is a happy medium in there somewhere. Obviously, talent trumps positions when your talent is good enough.

So...everyone in workouts isn't a bad thing for sure. Does the summer trip to Italy sway some of the players to stay for the season knowing they'll have that "potentially once-in-a-lifetime" trip if they stick with the team for next season? I would think for a bunch of 18/19/20 year old young men a trip like that could keep you motivated to stay and improve and earn the spot in the rotation next year.

"They were in workouts today" is not coachspeak.
Agreed. Also, I am sure that any reporter that asks a loaded question like that is not going to get a straight answer. I think indicating that they were in workouts is a good way of saying, “Here what is known. They were at workouts today. Feel free to draw your own conclusions.” If BU has had frank discussions with players about where things stand or has opinions based on informed speculation (with much more first hand knowledge of the situation than us fans) I don’t think it serves a useful purpose to suggest that any committed players might be not as committed as they once were. I am hoping that none of the players have lost that lovin’ feeling...I choose to believe this until I hear otherwise from the players.

Interesting that Ayo at #30 is ahead of Carsen Edwards, THT, and Brazdeikis.
