Way to come strong UCLA😆 a 1.2 million per year pay cut for Cal to move to a place with an astronomically higher COL.
UCLA has a pretty long track record of not paying big numbers to attract top coaching talent.

Very true but seriously- why bother to make the offer unless you're going to give the guy SOME reason to say yes?
UCLA: "Hey Coach Cal- want to coach at UCLA? It will be just as much stress but with even more unrealistic expectations, you'll need to move, sell your current home, take a 1.2 million dollar pay cut, pay higher taxes, travel more than ever, pay way higher for everything, deal with the insanity of a jilted Kentucky fan base and no longer be the main entertainment attraction in town."

CAL: "Uh- why would I do that?"

UCLA: "We're UCLA and it is sunny a lot here."

You're missing the next step of Calipari's agent feigning interest from another school, the offer coming in below his current salary, and still stroking enough fear from Kentucky to give him a bump in pay. A few phone calls done in order to achieve what he wanted in the first place.

Sources: Texas A&M is expected to hold a Thursday Press Conference to introduce Virginia Tech's Buzz Williams as its next head basketball coach. Williams is tentatively scheduled to meet with the Aggies' players on Wednesday night.

Yep - sad for Tech - he's really pulled the program up from the depths - but the smoke has been out there since the beginning of the year. Not a strange move since he has ties to A&M, and more money but sad still to get a team to the S16 and the bolt.

IDK- there are multiple media reports that indicate Cal has had this extension waiting and sitting on his desk for a month- that it was offered in anticipation of the annual feelers put out for Cal's interest.

Is this just how Buzz operates? Gets the itch to start something new at a new school every 5-7 years? He left a pretty good thing at Marquette right? Were their issues with that job I forgot about when he left?

when he left Marquette he was losing 5 of his top 7 players. At Virginia Tech he's losing 4 of his top 6 players. No patience for a rebuild. Sorta like Lon Kruger

Plus Buzz was implicated in a coverup of sexual assault issues relating to some of his players. The legal and NCAA issues were at his front door.

A&M's basketball history is slightly better than VT's, but there are definitely more resources available there then VT. Sure he's getting a pay bump too.

As for the Marquette leave, it was lateral at best, but as other had pointed out, his roster was on the downturn, and again he got a pay raise.

Yes, and he has ties to Texas and TAM in particular - so better pay, closer ties. Its a shame because he was building a solid program at VT. Not sure he's at his dream school - so guess we'll check back in 5 years. On a side not Shaka's available if anyone is still interested. ;)

"A&M" and "basketball history" should never appear in the same sentence like this. Reed Arena is half full at best. They had Acie Law IV and... what?

I think Marquette was in a 2nd tier conference when he left (not in the Big East). While Marquette probably had a much better basketball history than VT, the prestige of the ACC probably made it a step up.

It's not what A&M has, it's what they don't have. As in Duke, UNC, UVA. SEC is usually UK and ......

Well Deandre Jordan and Khris Middleton are still in the league, which technically gives them double the number of active NBA players currently compared to UI...

Though I do agree history at TAMU is severely lacking, you can't possible tell me Virginia Tech's got more to claim. And I did say slightly better...

Did Texas fire him? I didnt see that. Although I did a search for him and the first thing that came up said he was a cantidate for the UCLA job.

Wha??

He is basically a .500 coach at Texas and missed the tourney in year 4.

Go for it UCLA...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Would love to know why coaches in a non-business don't have to sit a year after leaving employment under "circumstances" like a player does? Or maybe everyone could finally admit that the NCAA had become a business and players and coaches alike can be paid or can search for best opportunities without fault/penalty?

What did Illinois have when Lon came? He left because he more than doubled his salary. What did UNLV have, and he took them to the tournament? What did OK have when he went there? He has been fairly successful every where he went. Fla. was nothing, before he brought it back Kstate became something during Kruger's time. You are totally wrong about Lon Kruger.

Thanks for addressing this! There is no way he left Illinois because of a rebuild. His roster was loaded when he left for Atlanta. He left for Atlanta because of a huge salary increase.
