Wasn't he the lead recruiter for Randolph and Okpala? Both of those were massive recruiting wins for Illinois. I know Clark was a huge factor in those recruitments as well but I thought Cory did most of the leg work. Getting a kid out of Ladue Watkins is pretty amazing. Also we picked up Plohr from CBC in the last class and I'm sure Cory was a huge factor in landing him since he used to coach at CBC.

I hope we start adding guys from ESL, LN and Cardinal Ritter. Just so much talent at all of those schools and Cory appears to very much liked by all of those programs.

As far as Trinity goes, Coach Shannon just seems to be an advocate for his players and doesn't appear to be pushing them anywhere. He was on the staff while Cory was the Head Coach there so they are obviously on good terms. I think the question is how much talent will be left after the Class of 2020 is gone. I know they have one really good Class of 2021 WR but don't know much else about them beyond that.

Kind of long post but will shed some light.

The talent in St Louis and ESL is at an all time high right now. As I said before, this in coming Freshman class is lights out. Next years 7 and 8th grade classes are just as promising. Cory spent a lot of time on the little league scene as a coach and High School recruiter for CBC before he got his job at Trinity. He is responsible for both Baab and Brown (Ohio State) going to CBC. No one can expect Cory to pull miracles with EVERY kid is the St. Louis/ Metro East area. A lot of these kids are taking a chance on the potential and turning down dream offers to do it. As long as the team is competitive this year, you will see Illinois become a household name in that market. Here are some of the connections you need to know.

Lutheran North - Cory is great friends with Carl Reed. They were both grinding together to get their name and kids out there. Guess who they consulted with on how to do it? You got it, Coach Sunkett. Coach Sunkett was the first black coach in the Suburban North which Reed played against him while attending Hazelwood Central. Thats when Coach Sunkett was at Riverview and sent the top QB (Christian Morton), the original Isiah Williams, only taller to Illinois. Kerry Glen was also apart of the time frame as well. Cardinal Ritter's current OC was the QB on Carl Reeds Hazelwood Central team that lost to Coach Sunkett. Coach Finney is the next Cory Patterson as he run STL Football U training facility in St. Louis. His group was responsible for training a couple of 4 stars out of this current class. He has the top Wideout in the current 2022 class in the country. The kid name is Luther Burden. There is another kid in the 2022 class that is on par or to some, better than Burden and his name is Kevin Collins. He plays for St. Mary's who is coached by Cory Bethany. Cory Bethany and Cory Patterson was on staff at CBC together. Both those kids have been offered by Illinois based on Cory Patterson recommendation.

There is a lot more to it but the bottom line is everyone has to be patient. If things workout with the current kids committed to Illinois from the STL area, Illinois will be in GREAT shape for the next few years. All of the young black coaches in St. Louis look up to Sunkett who has embraced Lovie with open arms. That is huge coming from a Coach that has had 4 Under Armour All Americans and 2 Army All Americans. He has provided all the young coaches in St. Louis the blue print. He is considered their OG or Unc which is short for Uncle.

Appreciate the insight.

Dug up this old post from January to show the importance/value of these first 2020 commitments. I feel it is important to value the class by the number of other schools, especially P5 schools, that also wanted the recruits you signed. Last year saw a significant bump up in quality of offers (small class). This class will be different as Illinois will bring in substantially more recruits than 2019. If Illinois can maintain the numbers from the 2019 class in a much bigger 2020 class, that would be a major sign of improvement.

2018 Recruiting Class

Total Offers Reported/Power 5 Offers Reported
208 Total Offers/90 Power 5 Offers
43% of all offers from P5 schools
27 enrollees = 7.7 offers/3.3 Power 5 offers per recruit

Percentage of Recruits with no P5 Offers (besides Illinois)
44% (n = 12)

Percentage of Recruits with 5 or >5 Total Offers (besides Illinois)
48% (n = 13)

2019 Recruiting Class

Total Offers Reported/Power 5 Offers Reported
231 Total Offers/146 Power 5 Offers
63% of all offers from P5 schools
12 enrollees = 17.7 offers/11.2 Power 5 offers per recruit

Percentage of Recruits with no P5 Offers (besides Illinois)
17% (n = 2)

Percentage of Recruits with 5 or >5 Total Offers (besides Illinois)
8% (n = 1)

2020 Recruiting Class

Total Offers Reported/Power 5 Offers Reported
48 Total Offers/37 Power 5 Offers (from only 3 recruits)
77% of all offers from P5 schools
3 recruits = 16 offers/12.3 Power 5 offers per recruit

Very well done analysis. (y)

Immediately eligible. 2 years of eligibility.
That would be huge. Hasn't done much as USC but they are always pretty stacked at skill positions. Would figure to be an immediate upgrade on anyone else on the roster with possible exception to Smalling.

I think I read he had some injury problems during his time there, hip surgery or something. Sorry, too lazy to find the link...

Hopefully not a torn labrum. That is serious stuff. My wife had that. As did Isaiah Thomas.

Well, looks like.... Risky Business is currently airing on IFC.....so apparently we've entered some strange recruiting dimension where Illinois is relevant again!

Is it just a coincidence that all the good news we have received the last few days about recruiting is direct result of booze finally being sold at memorial stadium?

Except beer is not booze. Beer is beer. Just like a hot dog is not a sandwich, it is a hot dog!

With three kids I college I can report to my fellow old timers that kids these days prefer booze to beer. Not even close. And if they do drink beer its not their Dad's quarter beers of whatever is being poured, rather some kind of boutique beer. (Quarter beers kind of go well with hot dogs)

And some beer has more booze in it than other beer...

"Quarter beers"?

Bellamy's tweets have me uneasy. The checkers/chess one and "Thinking of a Master Plan..... Dont worry, it’s still moving...."

It's a loooooong way until signing day. No sense in being uneasy. In college football recruiting (and verbal commitments).....until they sign, it never happened.
