My friends, after watching the spring game highlights, I am sorry to report that our helmet decal alignment issue continues to plague us. Who can deliver us from this?

The thing is, if we fire Lovie and hire, like, Brady Hoke or something awful and they come out game 1 and the helmet logos are rotated correctly, I am going to become an over-the-top homer shill like nothing this board has ever seen. I am a one-issue voter.

I know its a dumb sports radio take, but this just so symbolizes the lack of attention to detail endemic to Illinois athletics over the course of decades.

I don't see anything wrong with the alignment of the I. I kinda like the fact that the I leans forward. To me that looks a bit "faster".

I think this perfectly illustrates it too. Helmets are at similar angles and the block I's aren't. So its not even consistently rotated.
I'd still pick having the correct stroke over the rotation though.

I wonder if its due to different helmet styles- both players have a different helmet shell - ie. air holes, etc. No excuse, just wondering how this could be inconsistent ....

When you look at other programs, they just stick the decals over the holes and ridges and whatnot. Which can kinda look goofy when you get to looking at it up close, but it looks right on TV and from the stands, and that's what matters.

But #3 is outrunning #32. Which means the I slanting forward really does make him faster!

#FixTheI - we need a new cause now that Alma is gone and Tevian is free.

I think the helmets are put on a table and the sticker is put on vertically plumb

the issue is some helmets wear differently on the head than others, causing the letter to look out of plumb when worn.
there is a solution, but no one other than a few guys on here seem to care.
I don't think it looks good, but on a list of 1000 things wrong with UI football or my life, its like # 998 to worry about. right after # 997, which is when my wife hangs my shirts up , fresh from the cleaners no less, in the wrong direction in my closet. WILMA!!!!!

Pretty sure this calls for an Engineering student team contest to build an automated helmet sticker applier thingy.... alas - one more job replaced by automation.

Despite the helmet sticker incompetence, I think our uniforms rank up there with the best in college football

I preferred our previous set, but I'm warming to these.

There's still always going to be the problem of how to use (or not use) white, a problem I think Will solved nicely in that linked post above.

I think as long as we go O/B/O at home, we're fine for those half of the games. What the road uniforms should be is up for debate. Personally, I loathe the O/W/O set, although I know a lot of people like those and it's historically what we've worn most often. My personal favorite road uniform recently is W/W/W. Back in the 90s, though, I was always a fan of O/W/B on the road.

Someone mentioned earlier that we should always go with Bears colors (B/B/W or B/W/B) when we play Northwestern. I'd be fine with that, I guess, but I still always prefer O/B/O at home.

I mostly agree with this, definitely with you on the home sets (for the most part) as I'm not a fan of all one color, and I HATE white pants (and to a lesser degree the white helmets). I've grown to not hate the orange on blue look though. I used to do that on NCAA Football all the time because it was just something I'd never seen in real life before.
As you can imagine with my dislike for white I'm not a fan of the "storm trooper" look on the road, but I do absolutely LOVE our white jerseys, they are beyond beautiful. B/W/B might be my favorite road look, swap in the orange lid if you want, but I need those blue pants on the road.

I'm flipping around to a bunch of games this afternoon, and I've gotta say, I am just bored to tears of all the mix-and-match colors and helmet finishes and special helmet stickers and all the other random ephemera.

I was never a fan of the Alabama and Penn State type nostalgia looks. I still don't think those are the best dressed teams around. But they are now the ones making a fashion statement and standing out from the pack, not the other way around.

I'm obviously biased, having grown up with the white helmets, plain blue-and-white uniform scheme, black shoes, and no names on the jerseys, but the Penn State uniforms -- like Alabama -- have become a central part of the program's identity. I personally love it. The uniforms are like the dotting of the i at Ohio State or the hedges at UGA. It's a part of the tradition that makes college football so unique.

I expect the Oregons and Marylands and others to experiment with 100 different uniforms over the course of a given decade -- half of which are utter eyesores. But I'd rather not see Illinois go that route.
