“R-E-L-A-X”....-Aaron Rodgers

I wouldn't worry too much...
Everything I've been able to get my eyes and ears on says mookie decision is down to three schools .. 1 big 10 1 big 12 and 1 sec... the big 10 school is the only one that matters obviously, then the other two are texas, and from what I have heard the sec school is mizzou.... dont know for sure about the latter... so far the experts are giving us an 87 percent chance to land him..
Hope they're right... one last thing I've heard mookie mom knows where he is going but cannot disclose yet...
Really has me wondering about the pic she posted of mookie in illini gear.???

Wonder what was the last time Illinois football has this type of roster stability. 2009?
Exactly. We've made huge repairs to the roster, we've made huge inroads with regards to recruiting in key areas, and now we've got to see it all translate to wins in the next two seasons. Who's going to the first bowl game in a while with me???

More recently, since zook, I feel like we are building a brand. Guys buying in and and uptick in recruiting. We are becoming something more than a downtrodden forgettable program. The first couple of years weren’t sexy but the class balance was very important. Now we are in a real position to make a move in the big ten. I just hope the talent materializes. I’m still cautious, but hopeful

This post needs to be quoted and discussed, over and over and over again! All the way until signing day, when this board finally fully realizes the same thing it had to with Shammond! 💯

Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

The bad news of course is that with 28 juniors, we have a 3-scholarship hole coming (because you can only bring in 25 at a time). Not the end of the world, but something to keep an eye on.

82 scholarship players and 41 upperclassmen is a nice place to be.

There's some redshirt juniors that the staff could decide not to give a 5th year to help with that.

We are going to be very Senior laden next season. That's good (for next year) and bad (for the following). Hopefully these Freshmen we have this year can adapt quickly and be contributors as Sophs next year.

This is not as concerning because we will have 41 upperclassmen plus transfers. The 20 class will be sophomores and have a year to develop. Based on the talent level so far, they may make an impact in their 2nd year

McCourt immediately comes to mind if he loses the kicking battle to Griffin. It's hard to justify keeping a Kicker on scholarship for more than 4 years when he has never actually kicked in a game.

There's also guys like Brandon Jones, Griffin Palmer and Kurt Gavin who haven't had many/any meaningful snaps.

Roundtree could also declare for the NFL draft.

There's almost no chance that all of these guys are coming back.

Does anyone have a source on "optimal" balance?

I would assume you'd like to be a little freshman heavy by roster spots due to attrition, while having enough seniors that they are taking most the snaps.

Clearly, this is much better than we have been in years. Just curious what the real goal should be.

It kinda depends on where you are in your evolution as a program. And it just inherently kind of goes in cycles, it's impossible to stay stable at one "ideal" roster setting.

I think in terms of broad rules there are three biggies:

1. As close to 85 total as possible
2. A healthy number of seniors, particularly seniors who are major on field contributors, particularly ones who have been with the program their whole careers, if possible under the same coach. That's your leadership, stability, game awareness core of the team.
3. No non-freshman group getting too far beyond 25

We were there in 2016. It fell apart. We made the decision to demolish the structure and break all of those rules. We're finally back.

Ideally most of your starters would be Seniors and Juniors, with a few underclassmen mixed in, typically at the skill positions and not on the OL or DL. Illini will be getting close to that this season; should definitely be there the following season.

I believe the correct wording is you can only bring in 25 per CLASS. not 25 per year . Those problems are not that hard to correct. See our last two transfers in

Cmon, that last bit is hyperbole. It seems fairly obvious that this years senior and junior class was thin, so 2 wasn’t really an option. So if you accept that, you get the big class trying to get to 85. At 28 in the class, I really don’t think this will be a problem.
