The whole idea behind the "student athlete" is to keep that athlete from becoming an additional cost to the schools. Cost interferes with the whole "steal underpants, profit" business model. Like others have said, integrity doesn't have any money in it, and until it does (and fans start going elsewhere), well, too bad.

Sure they have the #1 PG in the nation....and the #3 SF....and the #5 SG....and the #7 PF, but their center, he's only a 3 star.
Did anyone else have to double check that this is indeed the #1 PG in the nation?

I saw him play twice this year in person. He dropped 54 and 37. His team, Pinnacle won the AZ state championship last two years. The red hair is hard to miss but he is a standout with scoring, rebounding, passing and defense. As the news about AZ keeps coming in I keep wondering if he will go elsewhere.

Not trying to minimize, defend or excuse, but I believe the molestation issues were regarding Nassar.
And Izzo defended Nassar and actively covered up the rape. MSU has a clear institutional problem, and Izzo is right in the thick of it. He's a good coach and a terrible human being. He's filth cut from a worse cloth than guys like Coach K. Paying players is unethical, not immoral.

If you don't think there's recruiting dirt on Izzo, look no further than the Mateen Cleaves recruitment. Izzo started out dirty. Btw, Mateen Cleaves is also up on rape charges.

Can you support that claim?

I read the article where Izzo was attacked, and he had nothing but sympathy for the victims, and went to great length to complement them oh their courage. I'm not aware of him defending Nassar once the truth came out, or even prior. How anyone could defend Nassar, at least once there was a cascade of claims, defies reason. Izzo got attacked despite expressing nothing but sympathy for the victims, because he was pressed by a reporter with a specific question on changing the administration. He voiced support for the President & Administration of the University --AND THAT is what became instantly political. A prominent victim's mother pounced on it with some choice words for him. I can understand people wanting (or not) the University leadership to change, but that's a far cry from defending Nassar. By the way, I have nothing but sympathy for that mother, and share her outrage that Nassar got away with it for so long. I also happen to agree with her on holding the highest folks at MSU responsible. Being in Michigan, I've had the unfortunate ability to speak to someone closer to what happened, and it's a strange tale of far too much trust, lack of oversight, and even parents *who were in the room at the time* not knowing exactly what was going on. MSU made some very bad tactical decisions on handling it, for the usual bad reasons (fear of lawsuits). Eventually they were forced into better behavior.

As far as the other suggestion about directly covering up a rape by his players, that seems inconceivable. That implies he knew whether or not they were guilty (i.e. that a rape did in fact occur,) but chose to engage in felony crimes to knowingly cover it up. I did a search to try and find out more, and what I found was that A) She's sued the University, which means she's after compensation, B) she's "considering" filing a police report now that 4 years have elapsed since the alleged rape. C) I couldn't find many details on her account, despite all the time that's elapsed, nor could I find anything saying that a prosecutor had taken up the criminal case, which is unfortunate, assuming her allegation is true. To me, that suggests to some degree, there are issues with having hard evidence (cue Beavis and Butthead). I'm not disputing anything she has to say, just pointing out the difficulty in making assumptions at this point. I'm not a fan of mob justice (with the rare exception that sometimes the justice system gets it so wrong, I kinda wish one of the family members would take things into their own hands).

First off, this post is in general reply to 'Why do people hate Izzo?' rather than any specific questions in your post, Calvin, or the previous ones. It also doesn't belong in this thread, and it will be my only post on it. The Loyalty thread at the time was this one.

I believe the recent Izzo backlash started with this OTL investigation from January, 2018. The article reports (among many other things) that Carolyn Schaner, an MSU student, went to the campus police and accused Adreian Payne and Keith Appling of sexual assault. Cherry picking from the article...

She told police that she said to the men, "I don't want it," "stop" and "don't."
In a video interview obtained by Outside the Lines, Payne told detectives that Schaner had indicated she wanted to leave.
According to a police report, Payne told officers that he could "understand how she would feel that she was not free to leave."

skipping ahead a bit

Schaner says campus police investigators told her that, because of Payne's police interview, they had a solid case to pursue. Once the case was forwarded from police to Ingham County prosecutors, Schaner was interviewed by an assistant prosecutor, Debra Rousseau Martinez. Schaner says Martinez told her she did not seem strong enough to stand up to questioning that would come as a result of making allegations against MSU basketball players.

No charges were filed in the case. The assistant prosecutor, Martinez, now works for Michigan State's Title IX office. She declined to comment on Schaner's case.

Izzo was then asked about the cases and his answers left even MSU fans a little cold.

But don't worry.
"The only thing I'm sure of is I feel so comfortable that I handled it the right way the whole time," Izzo told ESPN.

I have no problem with folks criticizing his communication and leadership. Or MSU's as an institution. Or her suing the institution if campus police tried to stop her from reporting the crime.

Thanks for the link to the topic.

Here is Izzo's comment following the Nassar scandal becoming public that upset many people, including Aly Raisman's mother: "I hope the right person was convicted."

Tom Izzo apologizes after Aly Raisman's mom rips his remarks about Larry Nassar

Yes, that's the statement I cited. That quote is easy to take out of context. Within the statment, he has nothing but praise for the victims courage, so it seems likely to me that he simply fumbled that or didn't express himself articulately. There were hundreds of victims, so the folks reading that as evidence that he meant to challenge Nassar's guilt seems ludicrous to me. YMMV

An interesting article. The last three paragraphs or so give me some pause when considering if this might affect BU.

Would add that DeSousa has been reinstated at KU. While I agree with this, Self has some cajones for the comments he makes considering that he was explicitly implicated as knowing about the payments in the trial.

At least 6 schools are expected to get level 1 (the max) NCAA violations out of the investigation. Two as early as July and others end of summer.

Pretty amazing that ahead of the actual allegations, the NCAA exec pretty much flat out states that all the bigtime coaches named in the federal investigation will be receiving notices of allegations. Talk about a bomb -- Kansas, Arizona, Louisville, Oregon, NC State, LSU, OK State, etc. etc.!

Of course, allegations are one thing. We'll see if the NCAA actually follows through with sanctions.

Directional schools in Arizona, Alabama, Oklahoma, and California are preparing to shutter their programs.

So, considering how the NCAA works, the six would be: Kansas City Community College, Illinois, The Women's College of the University of Denver, Illinois, Cal Poly (just recently put on probation) and because it has the name Illinois in it, Illinois Institute of Technology
