Another twist in the Tommy Stevens sweepstakes: grad transfer Sawyer Smith to Kentucky.
Smith was the starting QB at Troy starting with the 7th game of the season.

Yes. It's down to us and Mississippi State. I'm not sure why Stevens hasn't announced his decision yet? I really don't want to get my hopes up about this. I believe Summer classes start on June 3rd at Mississippi State so we should know something by then.

We are only projected to have 80 scholarship players this fall so I really hope we add some transfers. Even ones who aren't going to be eligible immediately would be fine as long as they are going to challenge for a starting spot in 2020.

My money is on us right now. That may change.

The open scholarships makes me wonder if we would take Fink regardless, but rather we told him we would still take Stevens as well, so he is waiting to see what else happens. With 2 years left, it puts Fink in an already big junior class, but that seems manageable and having a veteran QB on the roster in 2020 still wouldn't be a bad thing as 3 sophomore QBs still isn't ideal.

I think Fink is not happening because Stevens wouldn't want the extra competition. There's a much clearer path to him starting without Fink here.

Also, one of IW, Robinson and Taylor needs to step up and take over in 2020. We can't rely on these transfer QBs every year. I mean, I guess we could but I'm sure Rod Smith can develop QBs and one of those guys should be good enough to take over. I would much rather see us use that scholarship on a QB recruit in this class.

I honestly haven't looked at enough of Fink or Stevens to have a good opinion of my own, but seems like most think Stevens would beat out Fink, but what matters is what Stevens thinks.

If Fink comes, I hope Robinson, Williams, and Taylor all beat him out, certainly hope at least one of them steps up and is a solid starter...but for us at this point I would be happy if he is a solid backup and having one upperclass QB on the roster in 2020 doesn't seem like a bad thing. With where we were a couple years ago at QB, I would take him with a couple extra scholarships still sitting out there even if the staff thought he would give us some leadership and depth at the position for the next 2 years...so maybe his scholarship isn't committable as speculated or maybe we just haven't given him the guarantee he wants for the next 2 years. If we can lock down Stevens for this year and find another home for the remaining scholarships that works...but if we are leaving one scholly open, I think there are worse ideas than spending one scholly on someone you see with a floor of being a backup plan to Stevens not coming this year and someone who improves your depth next year. So just guessing/wondering if the problem with Fink is not that we wouldn't take him, but rather us still pursuing Stevens even if Fink commits.

Now let's see if the staff lost Fink by slow playing him as they waited for Stevens...

I"m guessing the staff is slow rolling Fink on account of transcripts or something, because if they slow rolled him on account of Stevens, they're utterly incompetent. Anybody around PSU's program could have told you that Stevens was Miss State bound the second he announced his transfer.

The question as I understood it, was if MState would guarantee him the starting position. If not, we had a shot.

How come the waivers that got denied were public knowledge, but the ones that got approved are top-secret?

The sport version of "irreconcilable differences" and information spilling into the public sphere by those who feel wronged. When there's an approval, no one is upset.
