This is how I see it. The offense needs to be created to take advantage of Kofi's size and Giorgi's skills around the basket. Most teams don't have two bigs that can defend both of those skill sets, so creating the mismatches will be key. Hopefully the overseas trip will give them a chance to experiment with that some. If they figure that out, we could be really good offensively. If Giorgi becomes primarily a 3 shooter I have less confidence.

Outside of spread, one thing Underwood did at SFA was the commonly called “Euro” pick and roll offense. In its basic form it’s a continuity that allows for pick and roll/pop scoring options, high low scoring options, inversion, and has tons of movement. It actually has some similar principles to the weave we run with the backdoor cuts. With our current personnel it would probably work best with Ayo, Trent and Dre as the guards.

This probably doesn't belong here but I don't know where else. Big Ten Network is replaying the IL/MSU game (the good one) this coming Thursday at 11 a.m. And again June 9 at 1:30 p.m. for those junkies like me who need a basketball fix. Also on the 9th is the IL/IU game from 1989 when we beat Bobby Knight at the buzzer at Indiana. 11 a.m. Actually it is only an hour and it is called an "enhanced" show so it might not be the whole game but rather parts of it with interviews. And they are doing a piece on the Flyin' Illini 1989 right after at 12.

Getting the country primed for the next few Illini teams!

Thanks for the heads up! I’ll enjoy every minute of these shows.

Please double check though. I sometimes get things mixed up. Like the default on their web site is Eastern time and I am pretty sure I selected Central but maybe I didn't. Plus BTN often changes their schedule, seems to me.

Someone did an FOIA request for information about the Italy trip. Not sure if I should post a link or not but I just did a google search and found it so I don't think there would be anything wrong. UI responded with the information. There are no dates but it does say there will be 4 games. Man, am I desperate for information or what? o_O

By the way, I found a link to the finalized itinerary for the 2011 Italy games posted here and it was not posted (finalized) until August 8 and the first game was August 13. So we may have quite a wait.

Katz naming Ayo as 9th in the preseason Cousy award and Trent as the 12th ranked guard in his preseason for the jerry west award which is given to the top SG in the country has got me jacked up. If we can get rim protection from kofi plus Giorgi continues to build on his late season blocking ability we can make a run at the tournament. The layup drills teams had when playing us has to end.

Don't like the proposed rule in regard to the 3 pt. line. Don't have the Illinois 3 pt. stats in front of me, but moving line back another 16 inches is significant. Couple coaches on the committee said this would open the game up more. Open the lanes up to the basket. I don't want the college game to look more like the pro game. Watching more iso basketball is not as fun for me as seeing passing, cutting, and moving without the ball. I'd be more inclined to clog the lanes to the basket. Shooting %'s will go down. The line right now is a shot teams usually have to respect and yet look at some of the %'s the Illini and other teams put through the year. Three guys standing around watching on offense (which is already a part of the college game) isn't what i want to see more of.

So I think it’s reasonable to hope that the combo of Kofi/Samba/Kouma can give us 30 minutes per game. Absent foul trouble I think Giorgi gives us 30 as well. That leaves 20 minutes up for grabs in the front court. Hopefully Tevian/Kipper can fill those minutes.

I am really hoping Tevian takes a step forward. For whatever reason, Kipper is just not comfortable at all running the pinch post. I think playing there is a big part of what drove him into a funk last year. The year before (Underwood’s first year). He was able to play on the perimeter more and that’s when he had the most success (ie Mich State).

If we can have a replacement level front court we should be in good shape. Go Illini!

Have you watched the NBA lately? The game is no longer an iso game, at least not in the playoff games I have been watching. The level of ball handling, passing, and shooting is nothing short of amazing. Now, if you are referring to James Harden, then you probably have a point. I personally like the rule change.

Samba is the mystery to me, certainly hoping for ~20 mins from him also but have no idea if that is realistic. Giorgi/Kofi strong starters but backup is the question. Kipper has some ability but no confidence last year. Was it the role, playing bigger men, or just a funk that he will get over. We need a major improvement from at least two men to give us any depth.
