You seem to be suggesting that offenses will be better because we move the 3pt out or am I missing something? If that were the case, wouldn't teams have figured that out already and just be doing that anyway.

You still have to guard guys who can hit 3s. You have a choice, 1) you help down farther off the guy and your close out is a foot longer or 2) you don’t help and stay attached to your man which creates a gap a foot bigger.

It doesn’t matter what teams did before. Assuming the offense uses the 3 point line as a measure of spacing, closing out to the old 3 point line was closer than what the new one will be. You are forced to show your defensive priorities a bit more as you choose which areas to cover.

I think you’re missing his point. If it helps the offense to move the three point line back 2 feet, then you’d think that before the line was moved, coaches would have coached their players to play and shoot from at least 2 feet outside the three point arc. Maybe coaches did do that. But I’ve never heard or read about it.

Have there been any announcements regarding scheduled dates with non conference games besides the recently announced Miami game?

I didn’t miss his point. I specifically stated that if the offense uses the 3 point line as their base spacing, those are changes that will happen.

Look no further than our offense for a coach who sets his offense behind the 3 pt line. I also mentioned in a previous post that most colleges have nba lines on their practice court for shooting. But it also works for spacing.

Go to the very first post in this thread for all that is currently known.

I understand what your saying and don't disagree with the defensive choice, my question was if the original poster really thought it would make the offense better...so if it really is the case the offensive efficiency gets better, wouldn't someone have figured this out and set the offense up another step back. If it was more efficient there is nothing today to stop your offense from doing this already. So at the end of the day if this were more efficient, why would you assume the offense would set up at the 3 point line as a measure of spacing.

Precisely.

Of course this type of modification happens sometimes. Great shooters step back and get guarded closely. Chet Frazier is laid off.

Obviously a closer line helps most shooters, so coaches weren't going to tell them to take longer shots than necessary. Many perimeter players already spaced out further than the 3pt line so they could step into their shot on the catch. My guess is that you'll see a dip in 3pt%, but as players train more for the longer line it will come back up. This would give more spacing (as those shooters back up past the new line) and similar 3pt% leading to better overall offense. Just my prediction.

Haven't you been watching the Illini jacking up 3's and clanging them? Give me an Andres Feliz driving the lane over someone throwing up Saturn V moon shots. More enjoyable. Oh, and then there's that Bohannon guy from Iowa throwing them up from the team bus and making them against us. Sigh.

I actually meant more generally to college basketball rather than the illini specifically. Sometimes teams seem to forget that the analytics movement actually calls layups, free throws and 3's the best shots, not just jacking 3's all night.

Most of Trent's 3s are probably still 3s with the new line. The extended line could give Kofi and Giorgi more space inside to make plays. Feliz's game doesn't depend on threes and I'm not worried about Ayo. All in all I think an extended 3pt line could play to our strengths. However it does seem to reduce any chance of Damonte becoming a consistent outside threat offensively.

#Illini have added Belgium forward Benjamin Bosmans-Verdonk, per his Instagram. 6-foot-7 with length, skill and a nice-looking stroke.

I’m having trouble finding any stats on him. I see he played on the Belgian 16U team. The stats from that are unimpressive. Has he recently “blown up”?

Ok then.

Not to in any way disparage kids that come from tough upbringings/educational opportunity, but I can’t be the only one impressed by how articulate and humble that announcement is, particularly from a guy who I assume has learned English as a second+ language.

Not that it means much, but I like the idea of backfilling the humility and character of AJ.

Yes - I’m reading way too much into an Instagram post.
