2019 Depth Chart Grades -

QB - (C+) Questionable, but with reason for future optimism. Is IW ready? Is UMich QB a good fit?
RB - (A+) Undeniably loaded and set.
WR - (B) Surprisingly adequate with the addition of the USC receivers.
TE - (C-) Loss of Ford really hurts. Hopefully Barker has added some weight and quickness. No depth.
OL - (B) First string is good, second string is scary. Need whole line to step up without anchor Allegretti.

DE - (B) Lots of potential to be a good group. Roundtree loss hurts badly, Carney or Gay start?
DT - (B) Loaded with potential. Need to stay healthy to be good.
LB - (B+) Adequate for the first time in a while. Hansen/Harding/Eifler backed up by Tolson/Ware/Cooper should be able to stop plays if the scheming works.
CB - (B) Solid starters but weak depth. Beason will get a lot of playing time.
Safety - (B-) Brown needs to show dramatic improvement from 2019 for confidence in the secondary.

Kicker - (A-) Loaded and set.
Punter - (A+) Loaded and set.

Lotta optimism here. We're better, for sure, but I think there's grade inflation (when the benchmark is P5 programs).

I would say the defensive grades are a little on the high side at the moment. I 100% believe they will play at a B/A level due to actually being upper classmen finally. Most my projections did center around having an NFL pass rusher in Rountree on the field. He was one of the few to be proven. But I would like to see it before giving high grades just yet. They have added a lot of talent though!

Put the ball in those athletes hands, in space, and let them do there thing!

Definitely a lot of optimism there. Defense has a "B" overall grade and Offense has "B-" grade. Overall grade of a weak B seems about right but is a best case scenario.

"A" teams on the schedule (hope for not being blown out):
Wisconsin
Michigan

"A-" teams on the schedule (hope to appear somewhat competent in a lopsided loss):
Iowa
Nebraska

"B+" teams on the schedule (hope for an upset, although unlikely)
NW
Mich State

"B" teams on the schedule (hope for a competitive game):
Purdue

"B-" teams on the schedule (Illini win or lose faith):
Minny
Rutgers

"C+" teams on the schedule (If Illini lose, time to panic)
EMU
UConn
Akron

Path to 6 wins involves consistenly playing up to a "B" grade and beating Purdue, NW, or Michigan State.

To me this looks like the “typical” Illinois teams of a few years ago. Decent first string talent in most places. A couple guys step up and over achieve in the holes (eg qb) and we can be good. A couple key injuries and we are hurting. We start at -1 without Roundtree.

I would say 2017: F.
2018: D
2019: solid C, hopefully.
For me, C is average, 5-7 win range.
Comparing mostly to power 5 clubs as well.

I must have missed the announcement. Griffin or McCourt? Has either one attempted a field goal in a college game? What's this grade based upon?

I'm pretty excited for these 2 USC WR's. They may only have 12 collegiate catches between them, but if you look at USC's depth chart, their starting 3 WR set consists of the #2 WR in the entire 2018 class and two 4th year players that came in with our 2 guys, but were ranked higher coming out of HS. So needless to say they are STACKED. Both of these guys have battled injuries and it's not like they were beat out by lower rated players. Maybe they keep getting injured or don't realize their potential. But maybe, just maybe at least one them takes the opportunity and runs with it. Jeff Thomas and Ford this year would have been amazing, but this at least provides us with hope. And as an Illini fan, hope is a very good thing.

Based on what I heard in spring practice, jury is still out and they are waiting until camp to make the decision. Either one would be very good options for any P5 team.

Will we have a QB that can deliver the ball? I hope so.

So, above average across the board (well above average in most categories) except for TE where we are marginally below average. If true, we should be in contention for the league title.o_O
