Illini add Texas HS football coach Joe Price to recruiting staff

North Shore is freakin LOADED with athletes.

The rare school is a dream destination in football and basketball. Went to state in both last year. Won state in football. Lost to eventual state champ Duncanville in semis. A GREAT school to build inroads to.

Houston area for those wondering. Houston loaded with athletes in general.

Seems like an odd rule about not being able to sign any North Shore kids for 2 years.

The rule makes sense to me. Keeps teams from hiring guys and giving them fake jobs or roles that aren't vital to the success of the team, just to make a connection with recruits.

With that being said, how strict is the rule? If one of his players really wanted to commit before the 2 year ban could they just transfer high schools then commit?

People transfer to north shore, not away.

We don’t have inroads to Houston. This sets us up in the city to have relationships with all of the programs. We likely wouldn’t have had north shore students even consider Illinois over the next year. And if things look good, we have assistant roles that he can take at any point (since Lovie is running the defense).

I was wondering about that myself. We have an opening for a full time assistant (practice) coach on the staff. Is Lovie planning on giving that to someone else?

Who was the Kansas kid where Self hired his father to be "video coordinator" or something? Mario Chalmers? That was where the rule came from.

Did not realize it was a new rule. Seemed like hiring guys with fake or temporary jobs was the status quo. I’m guessing there will be a lot of schools that figure a way around that rule.

This is an example of good NCAA rulemaking.

If you want to hire Mario Chalmers' dad or Ayo Dosunmu's AAU coach, go right ahead. You have the same three (or 10 in the case of football) assistants spots that every other school has, and you can dispose of them in whatever way you choose. With any other additional support positions you may add, any current recruit in that person's orbit is out of bounds.

No discretion, no legalese, no slaps on the wrist, no pathetic attempts to pretend that you've killed off a black market, it's just a bright line rule that says *this* is the price of admission for this kind of influence peddling, and it's an equal price to all.

Alabama could have paid Cory Patterson double what we did to be an "Offensive Analyst" or something, but it wasn't worth it to them to give him one of their actual assistant spots, so now we have Williams and Cooper. No harm done to anybody.

Is there anything in the hiring terms that dictate a statute of limitations for these “off limits” regulations?

For instance, like you say, we hire Corey Patterson to an assistant job and we can use him to get recruits. Alabama won’t do that because they don’t need to use up an assistant spot like that.

But what if Alabama hired him as a true assistant, got the recruits to sign, then demoted him in less than a year. Super shady of course...but it could be done.

Unless there is some sort of “must be on your staff for a full year” stipulation.

Just curious.

I like what Lovie is doing. We just have to give time. He is still laying the floor on this program. Recruiting the ladt two years better than the first two. May not show in wins but we will be more competitive this year. More veterans and key transfers.

Welp, I think it’s the basement floor he’s laying so far. Hopefully we move up to the ground floor soon. 😉

.....the floor should already be laid....he has been given plenty of time. Also look at recruiting right now...as bad as it’s been during his time.

In my opinion this could be huge. We have the pipeline from St.Louis, now we could have a good one from the heart of Texas, where high school football is supreme!

He's just about dug himself out of the smoking crater he had to start in; now he has to start climbing the mountain.
The crater that was a 6-7 season? The one we are hoping against all odds to achieve? I'm sorry, I'm not saying Beckman was better than Lovie, but I'm tired of hearing him as an excuse for the current staff underachieving.

I think he’s referencing the Cubit year and the “not ideal” situation that left us with a large talent gap and a program riddled with potential culture (culture of losing) issues.

Lovie has been given all the time he needs. I’m not saying we have to go 10-2 this year, but he needs to field a competitive program that can go 6-6.

Where Beckman/Cubit/not ideal had us going was to the bottom of a deep crater and Lovie was definitely tasked with climbing us out of there.

Lovie has to put a great product on the field AND win.

We will accept both OR just later. But I very much doubt just prior. Although I think Josh will keep him for at least one more year no matter what.

Great product? He needs to put a competent defense on the field first and foremost. Have to push up off the floor before you can crawl. 😂

That "not ideal" class produced Jake Hansen, Stanley Green, Doug Kramer, Dele Harding, Kenyon Jackson, Tymir Oliver, it's not a great class, but it's not nearly the smoking crater people have made it out to be in order to justify the colossal underperformance thus far in the Lovie Era.

Yes, there were a handful of players, not nearly enough to field a competent football team. When coupled with beckmans classes and the complete instability surrounding the program with some coaching departures, a preseason firing, etc. it would be crazy to have expected great things to start lovies tenure.

Having said that, Lovie (and Whitman) decided to burn the program to the ground and start over. This year is the first year I believe we should expect competence on the field. A big jump in defensive efficiency and a roughly even season innoffensive efficiency (with evidencw that the following season looks great with the new freshmen). And more wins than last year.

In each class of 20-25 recruits we bring in, I think we should expect anywhere from 10-15 to be major contributors by their senior/redshirt junior year. (Depending on class size)

But not just 6. And I do like those players for sure. There were/are just too many not contributing on a high level.

We shall see how Lovie’s recruits contribute as they become juniors this year.
