I haven't seen this discussed here, but apparently 30 faculty members petitioned the NCAA regarding the continued use of Native American imagery.

Of interest:

• Continues to use the terms “Illini” and “Fighting Illini” as references to Native Americans, in violation of NCAA recommendations
......
• Ignores the recommendations of appointed and elected UIUC student and faculty governing bodies that encourage establishing a new sports mascot

30 whole signatures, huh? A revolutionary movement if I ever saw one! No doubt the NCAA will use this as an excuse to not deal with the criminals in its midst.

Every minute they spent on this activity is a minute they could have spent actually helping Native Americans, if that's what they really cared about.

Well, if they were to wipe out all vestiges of Native Americans then we wouldn't be able to use 'Illinois' as the name of the state.

A thought about a name. " Illini Golden plain" this would relate to our flat land state and the "golden" would relate to the corn grown on it> Add gold to the orange and blue colors. I can't think of anything more bland that would offend the NCAA and those 30 facility members who are collecting salaries from the U. while signing petitions about what is "politically correct" or not about the Chief unless they find the consumption of corn an issue. I was at the stadium in the 80's when the Chief of the Ogalla Souix tribe presented Chief Illiniwek with the headdress his tribe had made.......Did not seem Politically incorrect then !!!!! Anyway, just a thought from REOSPEED class of 1960 and family graduates Classes 84 and 88

The Native American Guardians Association is filing suit against the NCAA, and has hired a civil rights litigator to block NCAA's discriminatory ban on Native American imagery across all member schools, based on the fact that Native American's are the only ethnic group singled out for such treatment.

I'm not going to speak for NAGA since they have a website, here. You can also follow NAGA on facebook here. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, if you're so moved to support their activities.

It is my understanding that NAGA will come to Champaign this fall with a substantial number of authentic enrolled Native Americans in support of Chief Illiniwek. More on that as it develops.
