With all the sanctimony about being dedicated to student athletes, how can the NCAA look the other way on UNC’s academic feud, but not clear a kid that is fifth in his class? Keeping a kid with legitimate academic potential away from a scholarship over some paperwork. Way to look out for the student athletes. What a joke.
So honest question here: Does the NCAA have to clear walk ons? If UofI accepted him, as it appears they have and he has good grades and is a smart kid, why couldn’t he get an academic scholly and walk on the team. Maybe as a red shirt? I don’t know the ins and outs of how that might work, but I do wonder if we are always as creative as we could be, especially when you have a kid who clearly has the smarts to be a student here.

Yeah, now you are back to my earlier post about Div. III academic schollies and no show jobs. I expect the NCAA would look generally disfavorably on this work around, especially since it would only highlight the idiocy of their failure to clear Kouma in the 1st place. Rule 1: Never embarrass "the MAN".
How many additional "academic schollies" do you think North Carolina could give in no show/no work majors (so long as they offered at least the same major to at least one non-athlete)

Has it ever been mentioned that the NCAA is a big pile of (censored) who can't tell their (all the rest censored)?
Has it ever been mentioned Indianapolis is where NCAA is headquarted? /s. Their hypocrisy and lack of even handedness is well documented and ridiculous. I would love to see them in a courtroom explaining penalties for same/similar situations and disparity in penalties.

It's what they do. I used to say rules for the sake of rules but I now add exceptions for the powerful...not much different than our government.

This, apparently, is his profile after having chosen to go the prep school route. Did he have one with any offers/updates for when he was in high school?

This says it was his profile after choosing a prep school. Did he have one with any offers/updates for when he was in high school?

He had four D1 offers according to this article:

https://herald-review.com/sports/hi...cle_f842e172-5bdc-51e6-a4ae-ecf6fd3c7bbc.html

Among those making scholarship offers have been North Dakota, South Dakota, Purdue Fort Wayne and Eastern Illinois. Saint Louis and Southern Illinois have also shown interest.

What’s the scoop on this guy? Downgrade from Kouma or no? What’s the potential ceiling/floor situation here for his 2019 season?
I think it's clearly a downgrade but he hasnt been playing long and if Kouma isnt gonna get in we may as well use it. I trust BU but these types of last minute adds usually are not around long. At least he has a lot of room for improvement and some ability according to his high school coach. Lincoln's Coach Alexander has been there a while right and speaks highly of how much he has improved so that's encouraging. I wish him.luck.

Mark Tupper suggested that Bernard Kouma was not on campus. Whats the story? Did I miss something?
Nothing new here, but Underwood was asked today on Saturday Sports Talk if there was anything to report on Kouma. The one word answer was no. A telling contrast to earlier this summer when he was saying we just have to wait for the process to play out, yada yada. I expect they are waiting for Kouma to eventually make an announcement of where he will play, which is probably the best way to handle it.

Not sure it means anything, but they a similarly ranked and size. That said, I’m certain there’s a reason for his weak offer list. At least there will be a body to defend Kofi in practice.

Kouma: very tough break for the kid (great job, NCAA!). Wish him all the best.

Hamlin: definition of a flier. That said, if we're gonna take one, this is a great year to do it. Kid has some intriguing attributes. Let's see where he's at in a year.

IMO Kouma showed more skill and ability from different levels and against a solid team put up solid numbers with 29 and 14, Plus he signed in May and not late August or i am sure he would have had better offers besides just us and Dayton, Which i think is a much better offer that the other had. Ome fame bs L Whitneys team

i liked kouma and i hope we still get him

Too many fliers over the last few years. Yes, two worked out, but if the level of recruiting is going to be projects and overseas players....it's going to be tough to be relevant. These issues are directly correlated with whiffing each fall. If they landed any of their top targets, they wouldn't be handing out scholarships to any warm body that will accept.

Very positive addition. Even if he red-shirts this year, he brings a long body with shot blocking skills to practice against.

It's mid-August. Would you rather have the schollie sit unused? Kouma was out of our control.

Our current recruiting station is far, far from where we all want it to be (and where it used to be). But we need to win.

Well, they definitely hit on two of their top targets.

You're right. You weigh the pros and cons of eating it for 2019 or putting a butt in the seat....I guess at very least he's height and another body in practice.

I am good with the addition regardless of whether Kouma qualifies... Position of need and potentially could help us sooner rather than later. If Kouma doesn't qualify it makes it that much more important.....It's last call and you're lonely....what else do you do?

Out of how many? The list of top targets has been long and over three years, we have more transfers than we do Fall commitments. Hey, this does at least close the gap on the overseas vs state of Illinois player ratio.

I was just comparing the 247 rankings. I fully expect that Kouma is a better prospect.

Interesting that the article linked listed Hamlin at 220 in February, while 247 now shows him at 240. Pointing out the obvious here I know, but missing the summer with Fletch and the 10 practices puts the kid waaay behind. I wouldn’t expect to see him on the court this year.

I guess my biggest issue is that while a team like Wisconsin is landing the #6 or #7 player in the state of Illinois for 2021, who is a big man....we're taking a big guy just to fill a seat for 2019. We're three months away from another fall signing period coming and going...we'll see how it plays out.

There’s an old song with the line: The girls all get prettier at closing time.

Seems appropriate for our recruiting no?

Of course the song later bemoans:

When tomorrow morning comes,
And I wake up with a number 1,
I swear I’ll never do it anymore.

😆😆😆
