How many people think Peters is going to get NFL interest after one season with limited prep time in Rod's system?

I'm at 20% tops. I will be shocked if he isn't starting here next year also
Six five, 235 lbs with a rocket arm will get you lots of NFL interest, especially if the team wins 7 or more games which I predict. I have no reason to believe Peters wants to play two years more of college football. Trubisky only started one year at a basketball school and the Bears traded up to get him. I would be shocked for Peters to be the starting qb next year for numerous reasons.

I think the chances that he's not starting next year because he was drafted are much lower than the chances that he lost the job due to poor performance.

Yeah, because he was wildly successful in his first opportunity for playing time.

Make no mistake, Peters is here because he flopped at Michigan. He's got some tools and the frame to make NFL scouts take notice, but he's going to have to have a monster, monster season to be in NFL consideration, especially considering we're gonna be a pretty run-focused, non-pro style offense.

Jacoby Brissett managed something a bit similar when he failed at Florida as a big time recruit and then succeeded at NC State, ending up in the 3rd round. It's not impossible. But it's not likely either, and keep in mind that Brissett showed two seasons of solid productivity at NC State before the NFL came calling.

Jeff Driskel too, now that I'm researching it. He was the best QB in his recruiting class, was awful for Florida for four years, and then grad transferred to Louisiana Tech and put up video game numbers, 4,000 yards, 62% completion, and ended up in the 6th round and actually started some games for the Bengals last year.

If Peters throws for 4,000 yards, he will have NFL interest and Illinois is going to have a really good season. I won't hold my breath for that outcome though.

Considering that the Illinois season passing record is 3671 by Tony Eason, if Peters throws for 4,000 we are going to have an extremely good year.

I am more impressed by the remark a couple of weeks ago by either Mitchell or Harrison (safeties on the 2008 Rose Bowl team) that the addition of Lou Hernandez got all of the old time players excited. I believe Mitchell said at the 9-10 minute mark that "Lou is worth 1 to 2 victories per year.

Peters reminds me of a slightly more athletic Wes Lunt. I’m not convinced he has the moxy to hold on to the job, but I hope he proves me wrong

I'd be thrilled if Peters is even close to Lunt in talent. Lunt has the highest single season passing efficiency rating of any quarterback to ever play for Illinois. His career was hampered by injury, but his career efficiency rating is still top ten for the school. The 456 yards he threw for vs. W. Kentucky ranks 4th in school history. Though he played for Okie St. as a freshman, he is still in the Illinois top ten for career passing yards. You'll find his name all over the Illinois QB record book.

I wasn't as high on Lunt as everyone else was when he transferred, nor did I particularly think he was that great when he was here. But honestly, I think I was looking at him with pessimistic blinders. What you posted here really needs to be repeated often. If Lunt wasn't so injury prone and slow, he really could have been amazing. Like you said, if Peters has Lunt's passing ability, we're gonna be in good shape.

The Red Grange statue was slightly less mobile than Lunt. Emphasis on slightly.

Peters is far more mobile than Lunt (not a high bar).
As soon as Lunt took 1 step, it was an automatic incompletion. He absolutely could not throw on the run. Peters can, big difference.

Tentative 2019 football scholarship grid. Any mistakes? (Are the kickers on scholarship?)

Shade of orange represents 247 rating; no color = no rating. Walk-ons are at the bottom. Suggestions?

Outstanding job on this.

Yes, both kickers are on scholarship.

I know he's not on the roster yet but Derrick Smith will put us at 84 scholarship players which means we still have room for one more transfer or one of the walk-ons (Bernat?) could get the last scholarship.

Not sure if he is even walking yet, let alone get back to playing college football, but should we plan on Bobby redshirting this year? You think the staff will keep him on scholarship as long as possible to help out his family?

Thanks for the info. I'll add Smith tonight.

Yeah, I wasn't sure how to handle Bobby. As long as they still have him on the roster, I'll include him. I'm not sure if eventually they would give him a non-athletic scholarship. I'll show Bobby and Marquez as medical redshirts for the 2019 season in the next iteration.

I am not sure if this has been posted yet, but I thought the attached rankings of composite talent were interesting. The Illini are 8th, ahead of Iowa, Minnesota, and Northwestern in the Big 10 West. Hopefully the upgraded talent will result in more wins.

Damn that gap between OSU and Michigan is a lot bigger than I expected
Yeah, and it is not a 1 yr thing, which may be what you are saying; but the link only takes you to 2019, however if you walk through the last 4 years it is in the same range every year.

. . . and within reasonable striking distance of Wisky and Sparty.

This year is hugely important in so many ways. Lovie likely is going to have a maximum size recruiting class to fill in 2021; if the team goes bowling this season, that will be much easier to fill with quality athletes. If the team doesn't show progress . . . gulp.

And this is where the conversation inevitably goes back to what constitutes success or determines Lovie’s status going forward? I cringe every time I see someone say 5 wins and everything is ok. It’s not.
