We may not be his only suitor, but I think there's probably almost zero doubt that Cory Patterson has a spot on the 2020 Illini staff if he wants one.

Imagine the spot he is in. I know it was reported he was offered a spot at Kansas this offseason. But what if a successful program came calling? Would he leave his players from Trinity for the betterment of his individual career?

Frenchie is more tied to Cory. We'd have to see how his status played out. I think Reggie is a solid in either way but i haven't been told that directly, just my hunch.

CJ is shaky regardless of who the head coach is.
You think Jadon is more tied in with Bellamy or the school?

Isn't that pretty much what he did when he came here?

Northwestern, historically almost never gets 4* players and they win just fine.

They've signed multiple 4* star recruits over the last decade and their annual average player ranking sits right in the middle of the conference pack (As does Iowa's). They recruit just fine.

So do we though.

Recruiting as the skeleton key to explain our constant, routine, massive failure doesn't fit. It's a closer call than in basketball, where that argument is, like, technicolor performance art wrong, but it is still the case that just looking at the talent level would indicate we should have won a bunch more games than we have. Few more dramatically so than Saturday, actually.

I assume it's gonna be a hard pull getting our next HC if Lovie is fired within 20ish months. I cant imagine the AD has a ton of money to throw around, nor is the program all the much more appealing than it was 3/4 years ago. I think both depth and talent have risen, but that really isn't saying much considering where we were.

Bret Bielema is an interesting hire, but I don't know if he wants back into the college game, or if he deserves another P5 job--even here. Then again, maybe Arkansas was just too far from his roots/ not the big ten. If we get Wisconsin Bret Bielema I'm all in (and I think he checks a lot of boxes).

But then again, we are just doing a different kind of retread. I think a non-sexy hire might be the way we go. Grab a hot OC/DC, hope they can man the ship and excel on that side of the ball, while filling their staff with a good mix of recruiters and teaches.

Honestly, my realistic expectations for what Lovie could do was to bring us back to what we were in 2010-2012. Sadly, it doesn't really look like that's the case. Also, it's so infuriating seeing him fail in so many similar ways now, as he did back in Chicago--signed a Bears fan.

We actually don't. Do you know how many times since 2012 our average annual recruit ranking (Per 247, solid source for this metric) has exceeded that of Northwestern's? One. 2019.

They out recruit us at every turn and they out coach us at every turn. As such, they out perform us at every turn. It's an easy formula for success.

Jason Candle please.

I'm surprised to be seeing his name, I would have thought people were scared to hire another Toledo coach.

A couple of really good tests for them the next couple of weeks, at Colorado State and then at home against BYU. We will find out what they're made of.

How have we gone 38 posts without an “ART MONKEN!!!!!”

Edit: 39 apparently

He is a Campbell guy so I feel pretty safe with it. Sure some stubborn fans out there will see Toledo and run screaming though.

Yeah, the problem we had wasn't the Toledo, it was the lasagna. We just picked the wrong piece of fruit from that coaching tree.

Mike Leach is a lazy argument. The guy got let go for something that had nothing to do with wins and losses. He has been successful everywhere he has been. We would have been ecstatic to have him hired, and rightfully so.

I have bad dreams about this.....WE Coulda, Mighta , Shoulda have LEACH here today....totally different atmosphere. That guy is so fun to watch and really get's the most out of his players.....

I want an established head coach with an established system, a record of success at every stop, and a staff that will by and large come with him.

Yes, that means pulling someone from the MAC-ish level of coaches. But frankly, I think the problems this program has are too big for someone who needs to learn on the fly.

A healthy Jerry Kill circa 2009 would be my ideal candidate. Does that guy exist? No clue.

Jim McElwain definitely intrigues me. I'm gonna wait out the rest of CMU's season to see where I land on him but he has a large profile of hiring good assistants, recruiting good players and winning football games.

Another name that peaks my interested is Craig Bohl.

McElwain is interesting. He runs a pro-style offense though. As far as assistants, I was underwhelmed with his DC and other assistants at CSU. Also worth mentioning is allegations at UF and how he left CSU.

Bohl would field a team of tough SOB's. That's just his style. I attended a game in Laramie against CSU (2015) when Bohls had a very young team. They played hard but, really got beat up by CSU. The following year at CSU, WYO put a hurting on CSU. Totally different team.

I hated Bielema at Wisky, which probably means he’d be a good hire here.

I agree that I want someone who can bring a mostly intact staff with him. I think that’s important. We’ve seen what struggling to put together a cohesive staff does and it’s not good.

I will say though, I’m not overly confident in JW to make another hire. I’d almost prefer to ride it out another year and see the overall state of athletics to see if we should reboot from the top down.

Mostly because I doubt Lovie gets fired anyways.
