OK.

Pre-game analysis.

The first quarter will tell the story of which direction this team is headed in.

The second quarter will confirm it.

End of the game will tell where Lovie is headed.

All, of course, IMVVHO.

For the love of God, please don’t come out in all orange. That will not only
guarantee a loss but insure we’ll look bad doing it.
I know I'm probably in the minority, but I love the all Orange unis. They obviously would look better if we win, but I'm sure that's not going to happen.

I think they look great, we've finally solved the multiple shades of orange problem, but yeah, we've taken one too many beatings that way.

Bring them out for Illinois State next year or something. Break the bad mojo.

Rumor has it the student section is sold out and overflow tickets are being sold in section 101. Probably helps they’re giving away free tickets, but whatever gets butts in seats is fine with me
As a current student, I can confirm this. And the email announcing that they’re giving away tickets for section 101 was really pushing students to act quickly and claim them before they’re gone.

I understand the negativity, but I'm going to try to push us to a more positive discussion. Rather than read 50 posts about how we have no chance, lets talk about things that can be reasonably fixed. Two things stand out to me.

-Stop shooting yourself in the foot with stupid penalties. Pretty simple.
-Peters needs to throw the ball away. He can make throws. I have confidence we can convert on 3rd&7, but too many times he took a sack that made it 3rd&17.

If we did those 2 things against EMU we win by 3 TD's.

Three things: safeties, don't let a receiver get behind you. This is usually taught in Pop Warner.

Be careful assuming that's a gimme game. It should be, but just ask Northwestern (2016), Colorado St. (2018), and Eastern Michigan (2012) what happens when you assume it's a walk in the park.

In my opinion, this game is the determining factor for Lovie's tenure. He can win back the fan base with an impressive win, or really cement the fact that he's in over his head with a loss.

I know which way I'm leaning.

I was at last weeks game for my somewhat-annual pilgrimmage back. Weather great, offense looked pretty good at times, but too many holding penalties. Defensively though, good lord. If we can't stop the mighty juggernaught that is Eastern Michigan, I am going to be in awe of how bad we will look against Nebraska. Time and time again EMU exploited open holes in our coverage. Nebraska is going to be having a scrimmage day.

Do not worry. HC and DC, both, have promised that the negatives has been noted, they will be cleaned and last I heard they are adding some wrinkles to our D.

I think there is a lot more truth to this than our HC or AD will admit to... but they both know...

Here is the total college football teaching experience of our defensive position coaches:

Gill Byrd
Illinois (2018-present)

Austin Clark -- Defensive Line
Illinois (2018-present)
USC (2016-17)(Assistant Defensive Line/Outside Linebackers)

Keynodo Hudson -- Cornerbacks
Florida Atlantic (2017-2018)
University of Charleston (2004-2008)

Miles Smith
Illinois (2018-present)

We don't have coaches with experience "coaching up" college kids. THAT is what has me disgusted.

Kind of damned if they do, damned if they don't though. Everyone wants young up and coming guys and complains about hiring retreads. But they hire a bunch of young guys and everyone complains they have no experience. Some balance might be better but it's a tough spot.

I just worry that Nebraska does everything Illinois can't seem to figure out. On defense, they blitz constantly. Peters struggled against that with EMU, and Illinois' offense got totally shut down by that last year (Purdue is the big example that leaps to mind).

On offense, they've got a good mobile QB and they run a ton of read option. This defense has never—not a single time in the last 3.5 years—effectively stopped an option-based offense.

They can't even execute the basic D. What's going to happen with some added wrinkles? 🙄

How early is too early to start tailgating tomorrow in Grange Grove? Thinking around noon should be good so I can actually remember the game. However not sure I will want to remember it.
