Isn't that 7 yards per play for last year, and this year it is only 5.2 yards per play? And it looks like 11 other Big Ten teams are giving up less yards per play in 2019, compared with all 13 in 2018.

I may have gotten the wrong year. Sorry about that.

Gophers: too much; Illini: not enough. Quite pessimistic about this one.

Interesting stat I hadn’t heard before: The most yards given up in a game at Memorial Stadium since it was built is 705. I haven't heard the exact # we got to from Saturday, but it has been said numerous times that we were over 700 until the final possession when Nebraska was taking a knee on consecutive plays.

At least Minnesota is a road game so we don’t have to worry about that record for a few weeks and Michigan and Wisconsin have good enough defenses that it’s not likely for us to score enough to make them run the score that high.

If our offense cant sustain drives, we may give up 700 yard on the ground alone to Wisconsin

705 was the Michigan State game in 2005. I could have sworn it was Penn State that year. I remember watching that Penn State game and hoping their running back wasn't going to beat Red Grange's 5 touchdown performance against Michigan for what was considered the greatest performance in Memorial Stadium History. Michael Robinson only scored 4 that game though. Phew!

Both those games were miserable. That stingy Mike Mallory defense in action.

An interesting divergence between the two major advanced stats rankings on this game.

The SP+ has us 68th and Minny 51st, indicating a game that we should be competitive in and have a chance to win.

FEI has us 92nd and Minny 32nd, indicating a blowout. They also have Purdue 73rd, so we'll see whether the favorable view of Minny holds up this weekend.

One thing to note, per SP+, Minny has the 109th ranked special teams nationally, and we're 3rd. The kicking game is going to have to be an impact for us to win.

Wisconsin probably doesn't think Michigan's defense is any good, but unfortunately we're not Wisconsin.

Our O-line has played pretty well, but Wisconsin has one of the best in the country. Not sure how he makes the jump, but BP has to learn to make quicker decisions. The scouting reports on him will become more punishing as the season progresses. I’m shocked Nebraska didn’t bring more pressure after the EMU debacle. I expect Minny will try to bring some heat. Hopefully we can take advantage of that with some plays down the field, but Peters has to be able to find his receivers.

I thought it was interesting to listen to Wes Lunt on the Monday night SportsTalk. He mentioned how its so easy to see the open guys from the booth as compared to on the field. He was worth a listen. Seems like a good guy.

Case closed. When one is in the pocket the field looks very very different than during the third instant replay.

By "on the field", I assume he means laying on the field.

Interesting, that seems like a pretty huge difference. Do you have any idea what causes that? Not familiar with FEI, but I have been following SP+ all year. He is 57% ATS so far.

I don't know the methodologies intimately. I do know FEI doesn't count FBS vs FCS games.

I prefer to use F/+ (available here), which just crudely averages the two. We're 83rd and Minny is 38th.

As the available data gets larger it will all start to converge.

What a setup!! Thank you much for this. I am laughing to no end.
As in, was this interview conducted while he was still laying on the field to this day?
Just wondering.
Hadn't quite thought of him still laying on the field to this day, but that's pretty funny. I just meant that while he was playing, the only chance he had to look for open guys was when he was laying on his back with a couple Dline on top of him.

Kinda surprised there isn’t more than 9 giving up less honestly
How we just totally die when it matters and in the end when we can actually win has destroyed any way I see us winning ang gottdanged game ever again. I hate feeling this way, but only Illinois football? does this to me. And I still love Illinois. Please just give us i don't even know what to ask for cuz we are always falling short of even mediocre victories. Dont know where to start in asking for can we please beat our crappiest opponent?

Anyone know what's the latest with the Calvin Avery situation? Is he out of the dog house? I saw he got some PT against Nebraska and if I remember correctly got his hand on a field goal or extra point.

I don’t think anything has changed. He still is out of shape and has not shown the discipline to get his weight to where they want him. I wouldn’t look for his reps to increase much until he does what the coaching staff wants from him.

Ya I think he got playing time more due to missing Lere and the other lineman were gased
