The panic by Georgia fans this week has been absolutely hilarious. Their PTSD puts ours to shame.

By the way, if we want to recruit the absolute heck out of Florida and can live with a guy who stinks as a coach (or maybe we can put a staff around him that mitigates that) Georgia OC James Coley would be your man.

I'm actually a little surprised the obsessive recruitniks around here haven't brought that name up.

As a playcaller though? Yikes.

I, personally, lean more towards people who have proven recruiting track records that show a clear ability to attract top talent to places that aren’t high end destinations (Like, you know, Illinois). People I’m close with love the guy but I need to see him perform for programs that aren’t Georgia, Miami or Florida State before he makes my list but that’s just me.

And ya, you still have to be able to coach on Saturday’s. Landing top talent is fruitless if you can’t develop that talent.

This feels very much like the case for John Groce to me.

Are you saying Groce did or did not fit that model? The big red flag with him for me was his struggles in the MAC regular season. Something just didn’t add up.

Groce had made it rain in recruiting at a non-blue blood. It will be fun listening to everyone disagreeing with that, but that's why he got the job.

And he was a good recruiter! And basketball is different than football of course. But it just doesn't make a ton of intuitive sense to me that the first thing you're looking for in a football coach isn't whether they can coach football.

I honestly think the star recruiter thing comes from the new age of coaches like Fleck. Where as long as you can bring in talent you will always be able to find competent coordinators looking to make a name for themselves with talented players that will get them to their next step. Now ideally you want someone who can do both, but keeping an influx of talent makes it easier to recruit good coordinators while being a good coach X&Os keeps coordinators from calling plays and building their rep.

Much as I hate to admit it, Fleck has shown himself to be a pretty darned good football coach. He keeps passing tests in that department, whereas James Coley keeps failing. The Al Golden era at Miami fell apart under Coley and Georgia, talented as they always are, are a worse offensive football team with him as OC.

And this statement totally conflicts with what I just said, but I think the colloquial message board paradigm of recruiting and coaching being the two great totally independent variables of a coach is largely wrong, and that the two skills have more in common than people think.

I agree, this isn't a video game where you have to subtract points from coaching to increase recruiting or vice versa. There are probably more coaches that are good at both (or neither) than there are one dimensional as we tend to categorize them.

And like, ultimately both are about being a good communicator and motivator of young people. There will of course be instances at the margin where you have an ink-stained wretch with a brilliant X's and O's mind who is valuable so long as you have position coaches and support staff who can translate the ideas to teenagers, or a magnetic personality who can get greatness out of kids so long as he's got a support staff who can feed him the right ideas, but at the college level, if you can get your kids to buy in, work passionately, and really understand the concepts of what you're trying to do, you're going to have a lot of success.

How could we have that decision half way through the season?

I'm still not convinced. I know 0440 has some inside sources, but there is no way that decision is made right now with half the games to go and no press conference. If we were to lose to Rutgers (not entirely out of the realm of possibilities), there is literally no way they can keep him without completely destroying the program.
