Miami 81, Illinois 79 POSTGAME

If that's what Underwood told Ayo then Underwood really is an idiot. You have time to set up a play and you only need a bucket. Find an open man and get him the damned rock. Hero ball should be your last option.
Ayo was the guy. Miami knew that. I think they should have played off that and had Kofi crashing with Ayo and getting a dump off.

Proud of the fellas for the comeback, but this one is on coaching and HORRENDOUS defense. Lykes made a lot of tough shots but the number of times we fell for pump fakes-too many to count. I miss the days where a game like this at home was never in question.
Agree on D...if we let a team shoot 59% and 56% 3p, we will lose like tonight.

Lmao! That was an entertaining game thread!
It’s like a bunch of mice jumping off the burning ship, except it’s just a grease fire.

Yeah, the kitchen is a mess, but we still have good cooks and plenty of ingredients.

Now if we could just stop lighting grease fires.....
I'm not so sure the cooks are that good based on what I've tasted so far.

This, big time on this. Starting line up should be:
Ayo, Trent, Damonte, Griffin, and Kofi. This offense isn’t clicking at all. It seems we had our best runs with this line up in the game tonight.
Yeah. Think this is probably the unit that works. Bench would have Feliz, GB, Kipper, Tev and Verdonk. Bench could put up 40 a night

Honest question: What am I missing when it comes to Damonte?

I've seen a lot of "pro" Damonte comments in the game thread. Yet I am absolutely of the opposite mind: I think Damonte is a total offensive liability who can't shoot and doesn't know where he should be on the floor most times (he runs around like a headless chicken). On defense he's definitely better, but he still isn't some kind of game changer.

What are you guys seeing that I'm not?? I consider myself a pretty sharp eye of scheme and flow and sets and, of course, production. Damonte seems like a 5 out of 10, and I don't know why he's getting so many minutes when we need points.
You hit the nail on the head. I don’t know if he doesn’t have the green light to try and do anything offensively, or if he doesn’t have the confidence. There were so many times in this game that he had lanes to attack the basket and didn’t do it. When your defender can stand in the center of the lane you cause a problem.

Major positive tonight is Damonte has made some major steps in the right direction offensively. He looks like his old athletic self, that put back dunk was awesome.

No
That's the Illini Special. "Hey does your team have shooting woes?? Book a game with Illinois! They'll straighten out whatever ails your team!!"
No joke. I must have seen it 20 times. Marcus Arnold anyone? The South Dakota St guy that went off for 30 and then transferred to us and did nothing?? That is *totally* an Illini Special. Watch - Lykes will grad transfer to us and morph into Ahmad Starks.

He played great tonight compared to almost everyone else on the team. He hustles on defense, his hands are always up, he’s always looking for steals, and he rebounds well for a guard. If Ayo has his hustle and effort on defense he would actually look like the 1st round pick he’s supposed to be

I think the most common non-con predictions from this board were 9-2. Still in play.
Check the predictions for yourself.

Almost no one had this as a loss. Most people had 10-1. about split between 9-2 and 11-0 from there.

So far this season, we haven't seen play that justifies the top 25 ranking that many of us were hoping for. We're possibly going to get moved out of the tourney predictions next week.

Like I said, I'm just waiting for Underwood to show his coaching prowess.

Ayo...overrated, Too soft . Trent playing worse than before Ayo arrived offensively, Offense running weave like a hs drill allowing college players a chance to relax and get set up to defend. Seems like team doesn't respond to what Underwood wants. Underwood was definately perplexed in first 10 minutes of first half. Big hole at 4 with Giorgi not looking comfortable out there. Need a win against a good team sometime to offset this bad loss. Do not expect it with what I have seen so far. Not enough heart and leadership from Ayo and noone putting him in his place to let Andres, Alan or Trent to take charge of offense.

I missed the first half. It looked like ILL could beat anyone if the team plays like it did the last eleven minutes.

It was the most disappointing overall basketball we’ve played in YEARS, if you ask me ... UIC loss at the United Center level apathy and ineptitude. Did we play great in the comeback? Of course. All that shows us is that we DO have the pieces, and that’s what’s so concerning.

It’s honestly surreal to me to imagine that I grew up watching Frankie Williams to Dee Brown...

Ayo showing what he’s capable of for six minutes just makes me more disgusted with his play overall.

Mizzou now a must win.

Getting Michigan and Maryland first might be a good thing. We need a few weeks to get our s*** together. Those two are likely losses anyway- get them out of the way now and hope we have our heads out of our rears by the time we get to the Iowa, Minny, Penn State, Indiana, etc games.
We are going to need some big upset wins if we have any chance of making the tournament. I think we will be better prepared later this year. Maybe playing them back to back we will be prepared for Michigan...?

Not sure what's wrong with this team. Talent is there, just doesn't quite mesh. I'd switch up rotation. We got three PGs and two Centers starting. With first 3/4 guys off the bench being wings. Take two of the starters out and bring in AG and Tevian/Damonte. Much more balanced and could give our 2nd unit playmakers that it's missing. Copy the Clippers model.

Spot on. I think I'd start by taking one of the PGs out (probably Feliz, think he'd make a great sixth man) and bringing in AG. They need a lot of work on defense but Giorgi is our best guy for feeding Kofi right now.
