Illinois 71, Michigan 62 POSTGAME

#176
Game demonstrated the huge difference from last year’s team. Consistently out rebounded and were out scored from the ft line last year. Won by nine and scored nine more from the line. Won the rebound battle by 16. Give BU credit for changing his offense and defense to utilize Kofi. We are still going to lose some games we shouldn’t and win some tough games but that happens to all teams. Beating Whisky is the next tell for me. We should run them out of the court with much superior talent but certainly haven’t in the past.

Was in attendance for tonight’s game, biggest take aways:

1: Kofi’s free throws were more clutch than it may seem. Did not expect him to hit at the rate he did but a very nice surprise.

2: Defense was shaky at the 3pt line early on on Teske, but Kofi adjusted fairly quickly and after Teske air-balled, was a non factor there. Overall very good defense. Better than I expected.

3: Even though turnovers were down, felt like we were still loose with the ball in key situations, but ultimately fought through it which is something we hadn’t done until tonight.

4: Ayo shows a lot of potential but looks like he’s forcing things and maybe looking TOO much into running the offense as designed. Multiple times was just left wide open at mid range and thought he could’ve just pulled it, eventually did it half way through the second half for a big bucket.

5: Rebounding was huge, AG after seeing it in person, gets AMAZING jumps on rebounds. Seemed like before it hit the rim, he already knew where it was going.

6: Would like to see us find open 3’s from passing the ball rather than iso/off the dribble.

Ultimately a lot of things to work on, but an amazing win none the less and think we righted the ship here.
if we are talking about things we need to work on, how bout some of our guards, one mainly comes to mind, feeding the post? One in particular makes me think he has never been taught to feed the post. Too many times I've seen a guard with about twelve on the shot clock, not feed the post, pull it out, dribble until the shot clock goes under ten, so the they can go one on one and take the shot...... Other than that, I like the way we are playing ball.

absolutely. It has to continue to improve, but all the credit to BU for making adjustments to match his personnel. Rebounding and interior defense is night and day from last year. Now we have to figure out our half court offense, which remains a serious work in progress.

Kofi and Giorgi passing beautifully into the post. I think all of our guards need to be schooled on how to do it. With two bigs in the game, it’s a critical to our offensive flow

One other note: The refs were clearly givin us some "home cooking" and we take one out of the game? Them zebras are a funny herd and they might not be so nice next time.

Having 50% more Offensive Rebounds (15) than Team Fouls (10) is a beautiful sight to behold. One that I'm not sure I've ever seen in my 40 years of Illini fandom.

Maybe this has been answered, but after the ref got clocked and checked out did they just play with two refs? Or do they keep a spare that just waits for something like this to happen? I had to keep volume down as Mrs. I was sawing logs last night.

There's no antidote for losses quite like this win. I will quibble with what you say above just a tiny bit though --I think Michigan didn't bring their A game. I think these guys are getting better at knowing what it takes to win, though. We will need to win some on the road, and this is encouraging. Road wins will be precious.

Hope that ref is ok --what a freak accident that he wanted to make the call moving out on the court, while Kofi swung a bit wildly where he was moving to.

Oh they brought it......we just took it away from them for 35 minutes.

Used 2 refs.

Know some posters wanted time for Tevian but just don’t see it in this game. 65 mins from Giorgi and Kofi and Kipper did a good job defensively in 14 mins. Not the time to experiment IMO. Played 8 players and tough to keep chemistry using more than that.

Maybe it already started, Kofi was called for his 1st foul almost immediately after play resumed.
Fwiw, right before Kofi shot his FT, one of the other refs talked to him and clearly told him not to beat himself up about it, was an accident. So hopefully all good

It's not like the NHL where they keep a beer league goalie on hand just in case.
