I believe the OSU start player was Gary Brads, who was their center.

My favorite memory was the 62/63 team and the game against Bowling Green in the Tournament. In the last few seconds of the game one of our players threw the ball from the BG free throw line and the ball went through for a 2 pointer. I believe it was Bill Starnes, but maybe it was Tal Brody. Anyway the shot had to be 70 feet. That was also the year Dave Downey was a first team All American. He has had a very successful life in the CU area.

Why didnt Downey play pro basketball? I know he got drafted but have never heard the story on why he didnt make it? Does anyone know?

I know that he was drafted late. IIRC, salaries at that level were so low that he decided to go to law school rather than continue to play ball.

19 points and 10 rebounds in 1 minute of action against Lamar State is what impressed me most. He even went 7 of 10 from the charity stripe that night.

JUCO stats are circumspect, to say the least (speaking from experience here). Depends on the interest level and knowledgeability of the typically disinterested student compiling the stats.

It was Gary Brads and OSU. Indiana did not have a starter over 6'5" and they had two....named Van Arsdale. McGlocklin and Bolyard were 6'4" and Jimmy Rayl was 6'2". The Hoosiers bottled up Brads with doubled teams and denying entry passes. They shot the ball well as all starters were shooters. Ron Peyser was first off the bench and he was 6'8". Quite a contrast in team size but the Hoosiers defended hard and caused havoc with the OSU offense...frustrating Brads to no end. After the game, we went to the Indiana locker room where I met 6"11" Walt Bellamy who was the tallest person I had ever seen. There was quite a celebration but we were also quite happy when we learned the Illini had won and were Big Ten Champions....but of course we did not let anyone know that.

Jimmy Rayl....thats a blast from the past...I remember watching him with his high arcing shot...was a big scorer if my memory serves me right...

This was back when the only network games were 1-2 times a week on Saturdays or Sundays....

I....am.....old.....(sigh)

If they would have 3 point line back then Jimmy Rayl, Rick Mount, Downey, & Doug Collins would have averaged 40 a game.

I remember the news-gazette photo with the dotted line flight path of the ball. And I too recall that it was Bobby Starnes with the shot.

I wonder what Jay Shielder would have done in his high school years if there had been a 3 pt. line....that kid could shoot....often scored 35-40pts. without the 3pt. line.....best pure high school shooter I think I've ever seen

Moves UM class to #6 in country. Just crazy to think that they don't have room for Adam Miller.
