To be clear, I think both of those out of bounds catches were difficult calls and I don’t blame the refs for going with what was called on the field instead of overturning the call. That doesn’t change the fact that I think they got one or both of those calls wrong and could’ve really changed the game if even one of those calls goes our way. The non-review and targeting calls were much more egregious misses on the refs part.

There is only one call that has absolutely no reason to be missed: the non-call fumble.

I may be in the minority, but I certainly feel the refs actually had a LOT less to do with this game than the Illini defense did. The refs didn't cause the secondary to constantly be out of position.

Also, as far as the non-call fumble goes, Lovie could have certainly challenged it. The fact that in real time it wasn't obvious enough to raise a stink should be noticed. Heck, had the announcers not said anything after the commercial break, I'm not sure anyone here would have been any wiser about it.

I don't recall the players acting like it was a turnover either. If one of them would have run it back to the endzone after they picked it up, the refs probably would have looked at it closer.

They make between $800 and $3000 a game depending on the game and the experience of the ref. Seems pretty good for 2hrs of work at 8 hrs $100 an hour as a minimum seems pretty good to me and that's if you work 8 hrs.
It's 2 hours if they live in the stadium but if they have to fly to get to the game and then fly back that's about 24 hours. So even at $1500 divided by 24 equals $62.50 and hour before taxes!!!!! Pure gravy job!

Also looking forward to next year and hopefully much more of Isaiah Williams, he looks sooo quick!

I think next year we need to use him like the Saints use Taysom Hill. Line him up all over to make the defense have to think. Motion triple options, RPOs, QB direct runs, get him 10 touches a game.

Sounds like they also have to pay for own travel and hotel.

Ah, the common fallacy that one only works when one is on the clock. Classic.

Besides that, your hourly range means nothing if you don’t get any hours. I could get $1000 an hour and it wouldn’t matter if I only received compensation for 1 hour per month. Doesn’t take a degree from our university to figure out that you aren’t making this a full time profession.

I’m a teacher. The idea that I only work from 8:15 to 3:15 each day is prevalent...

My hat is off to you my friend.

And again, per hour pay broken down isn’t the issue here. The issue is that you’re taking home between 15-40k a year pre-tax (Expensed excluded). To say that type of salary offering is a detriment to landing high end talent in this arena would be an understatement (Which is why the SEC openly boasts of covering expenses for officiating crews. The officials notice that). Officials are not well compensated at this level, period.

And of all is irrelevant to the fact that while they missed a few calls yesterday, we lost the game on our own accord (As is the norm). We let a QB who struggles with his mechanics when you move him off his spot to stand in his spot without pressure and deliver the football.

How about the refs should just get it right on the field?!?!?

About the uniforms being orange. I do love orange. But not these orange uniforms. I loved the Flying Illini when they wore all orange. Whatever shade of orange that is, duplicate that for football uniforms. But I wouldn’t mind some blue mixed in either.

I would like a version which mimicks the bears dark blue/black helmet and tops witj mh white pants and orange and blue stripe. Even make the I with the same font as the Bears C. Halas took the Bears colrs frim the Illini.

Let’s honor the refs like we honor the military. MY GOSH! Look it up yourselves! I told you what I looked up. They are WELL compensated!

I agree. I like the white tops with Orange pants and orange helmet look for road uni.

I was at the game...a couple random thoughts.

It was a tough loss, but I was expecting it. The refs were really bad... I mean who doesn't just call that Peters scramble a first down on the field... c'mon man! Tough to win 11 on 12

We did deserve to lose however. We're too shallow on the depth charts and our defense is too soft. Doesn't it seem like if we stop any opponent it's by pure luck? I never feel confident stopping a 3rd and 17. It seems like with our scheme any team can use all 4 downs to just shove it down our throats. That 4th down td at the end of the half was crushing.

Another side note... I was watching Isiah Williams in warm ups and he couldn't connect with any receivers.... Like at all! The kid may have running skills, but I wouldn't put too much faith in "the one" as our QB of the future. (Prove me wrong kid😉)

Peters got the first down, even though it wasn't awarded. Hopefully he lets this game fuel his offseason, and he becomes unstoppable next year.

To be honest, I thought it was a forward pass at first too, because, well, it went forward. And I thought one of our guys was going to snag it And when it was on the ground first, that was it.

However, I’m not a professional referee, or sportscaster either. I don’t know the exact rule about the arm moving forward and when it begins. Whatever it is, there were several good camera angles that could have been reviewed so we could be sure.

All that said, that one call could have been huge. As has been noted, we would have had the ball inside the 20, and at that point we were moving the ball well enough that a touchdown was more than a 50/50 probability. And if—I don’t remember the whole sequence—Cal scored on that drive, that alone would have been a swing of 14 points. A successful 2-point conversion would have finished regulatIon in a tie. Of course, there’s no telling what actually might have happed after that.

But it’s not beyond possibility that Illinois could have won this game. And how 2019 Illinois would that have been?

I thought it looked like the ball crossed out of bounds about a yard short. Is this the general consensus that it should have been a first down?

No. Only here; and only by a few. Peters was well short of the first down.

I really wish this "the refs cost us the game" garbage would get removed from this forum.

Well, yes and no. I also thought Peters came up a bit short, but then let's go back our Nebraska game earlier this season. Was there PI or not on our "last" offensive play?

I was at the game and Illinois seemed well-represented fan-wise. Although it is hard to tell when you are looking across the field at the opposing fans, it appeared we at least matched the number of Cal fans who were in the stadium. Has anyone seen any numbers on fan participation? I know that is history now, but it may come into play in bowl selections in the future. And yes, I am a complete optimist.
By the way, in the stadium, the Marching Illini completely outclassed the Cal band in sound and program and every other way.
I've been saying "next year" since 1964. I won't stop now. Happy New Year.
