We are tough as nails. All of our guards came to play today. Amazing win short handed in a hostile environment.

Would like to see coaches put in some actions to create offense when Ayo is in ISO and the lane is clogged as it was for most of the second half.

The announcers at the Rutgers halftime show just said this is the latest the Illini have been in first place since 2006!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have 5 road games left and MSU has 7. Gotta love it. We already played MSU, Maryland, , Purdue, Wisky, and Michigan on the road. We are set up pretty well after these 3 road wins

BU said on postgame radio that they called for a 1-4 flat set in the preceding timeout and didn't run a player to screen in Ayo's direction--presumably to make it impossible for UM to double the ball.

Worked out pretty well, I guess!

I'm not sure why they still couldn't just run someone there. But I guess that's dangerous too.

I know Simpson is a good defender, but that size difference was all the difference. I guess they didn't have a taller defender they could trust.

I guess they thought Ayo would use his speed to get to the basket rather than go over his defender.

Was courtside for this one, and what a treat to see them hang in to the end, before Ayo gets a cold-blooded kill on the road. Didn't look good when he tried to set it up, but man, what a gritty play.

UM did not impress me. They were ok, but nothing like the Jon Beilein teams. They had ZERO assists at halftime, at least the 5 guys on the floor. Both teams had good plays and bad ones, but Illinois fought harder.

Random thoughts:
Very tightly called game. Not impressed with some of the light contact stuff they called.
Da Monte gave us several extra possessions.
Kofi is a good defender. Pretty smart about timing his blocks, and waiting for smaller guys to actually get up in the air.
Trent in foul trouble was tough. He's a guy that steadies the team, and they had to go stretches where he simply wasn't available. Feliz of course, fills in well.
Tevian was not given much of a role, which is what I expected. Hope he wants to be a part of this team, but he has to earn coach's trust.
Ayo, well, everyone seems to have noticed his performance, so no need to comment ;)

Really happy for everyone. Fun to see us in the top-25 scoreboard

Not a good game by Kofi, numbers wise. But just his physical presence makes a difference for us. They have to game plan for him, he changes what teams do and frees things up for other players.

And an 87% ft shooter missing 2 free throws late??? Maybe it’s just our year.

Time for a gut check! There should be little doubt even by the most "the sky is falling" folks on this forum that we have finally learned how to win! If you were to say that we had to play at U of M, with Livers coming back and that we would be out-rebounded (37 to 34), have more turnovers (8 to 2), DeMonte and Kipper would have to play 31 and 23 minutes respectively, AG would not be able to play and Kofi/Giorgi combine for 4 of 16 from the field, 8 rebounds and 8 fouls, would anyone in their right mind predict that we would've won that game??? It's been mentioned in previous posts how ridiculously strong Ayo has been, how aggressive our D is playing and the impact of Dre but I think the entire team has a completely different mindset that no one can beat them!
And to make today even sweeter, I taped our game to watch West Virginia completely embarrass Mizz by 23 (74 - 51). Tilmon didn't play, M. Smith dominated with 1 of 6 from the field for 2 points and Pickett contributed with another 2 free throws after going 0 for 4 from the field. Mizz now sits at 9 & 10 for the year. While it makes me violently ill to think about that loss, I'm so glad things have worked out the way they have. Great time to be an Illini fan ... Cheers! :shield:
