One reason KW has been ineffective at the college level is his his shooting has been absolutely abysmal. He’s very athletic, but if you can’t shoot then you’re just a liability. I don’t know how he would fit into BU’s system, especially when we need to look for more shooters. I hope that BU will take him if he’s interested, only if he fits his system; not just to take him to appease fans.
Currently I’m hearing his interest in staying in college is low, kind of like a plan-b.

If Whitney comes here, does well, won't that help change some minds of in-state recruits and potentially increase our odds of being the first choice?

i think this is underrated. You’d have a guy who went to the prime spot, is uber talented out of high school, didn’t do well there, but thrives at illinois (in theory).

that’s following up the success Ayo and hopefully adam Miller have by staying home.

you could build a strong case.

why does mobile hate capital letters

Sometimes you can take an athletic player and they can be great in spite of being a below average or just so-so shooter. I watched Jackson of indiana last night and that is exactly how he plays and was described by the a announcers. He even stated that after the game that he needs to improve as a shooter. Our own Kenny Battle was kind of like this scoring around the basket and doing things to score in ways other college players couldnt. He was a great college player

Honest question (yes I would take KW if he wanted to come) , how much would an extremely athletic 4 help us that cannot shot? How is his defense? I have been under the impression that a 4 that can stretch the defense is what is keeping us from the next level.

Good question. I agree one of the bigger needs for this roster is a stretch 4 (hello Coleman Hawkins). I don't know anything about Whitney's defense, but if he were a serviceable defender, he'd be a net gain to ANY team paired with that size & athleticism. I'd kinda think of him as a rich man's Damonte.

Ubermensch

BOOM! Feed my ego.
Just because someone is a 5 star ranking doesn't translate to a being a great college player.

Please provide a quote where someone states, "Illinois should sign Whitney because he was a 5 star recruit and therefore will be a great college player."

Do you believe John Calipari—who has put more players into the first round of the NBA draft than anyone in the history of the game—wanted him on his team because he was rated 5 stars by fat guys on couches?

Stop being foolish. We take Whitney if he wants to come. 6'6 athletic 5 star

Edit: Well...

since we have now apparently decided that the coach does not need to be fired, perhaps we ought to let the coach decide who he wants on the team

Exactly. If BU thinks he can help and KW wants to come here then by all means. And for those who say, "he had his chance" does that mean if KW came you wouldn't support him because he didn't come the first time he had a chance? Of course not (or at least I hope not).

One word describes the Whitney recruitment==Complex
If you had to place a bet whether he transfers to another school, tests the NBA waters, or goes to play overseas, where would you put your money?

You can add Ryan Harrow and Kyle Wiltjer to the Charles Matthews team.
Ryan Harrow was so nasty. Especially in high school. Having personally been crossed up by him.
As far as the discussion goes - you take KW if he wants to come no questions asked. At worst we have a back up to Giorgi. KW at the 4 has to be an improvement from DW at the 4. And that’s not a knock on Damonte

Ben Simmons would beg to differ

Let's go apples to apples with this Ben Simmons comparison everyone is so hot on.
Ben Simmons '15-'16 LSU: True Shoting %: .600 Effective Field Goal %: .561
Khalil Whitney '19-'20 Kentucky: True Shoting %: .411 Effective Field Goal %: .403

Simmons went 199 of 297 at the free throw line for 67%
Whitney was 10 of 23 for 43.5%

These two things should not be compared as alike, they are quite different! Neither one may be a shooter, but one was an efficient scorer anyway.
This is not to say don't take Whitney (though i'd be inquiring about Kobe King). This is to say please stop bringing up Ben SImmons.

And if you are desperate for an NBA comparison, when Markelle Fultz (whom the Sixers had spent the first pick of the draft on) was traded for the hill of beans that was Jonathon Simmons, a first-round pick (via the Thunder), and a second-round pick (via the Cavaliers), he had posted an Effective Field Goal % of .432 playing in only 19 games of his second year. His eFG from his first year when the most common adjective used was "broken" - .405!

I've thought about King as well, but it looks like he's a RS soph. Unless he graduates early, he'll be a sit one play one. That is a less than ideal take for how we want this program to trend, and for a kid that's shown half a season of really good success.

I want to see what else comes out from this. I have a feeling some sort of hardship waiver will be pursued to play right away.

My worry for KW would be more of what’s his work ethic like & has he the right balance of belief in his star power vs his work ethic. Not saying I have any knowledge of any issues.

Yeah I have a feeling there's more than meets the eye here too. Don't hardship waivers normally come in after a kid is committed to playing somewhere? I supposed as a staff they'd have a decent idea whether or not they'd get it, but it seems like a heck of a crap shoot even knowing the entire story behind one.
