Watch the game again and watch kipper have great position 3 times and get called for the foul... They cleaned it up a little bit but by no means was it an even called game. Not blaming this on the refs, but Garza walks on water in the big ten.

I suppose the difference here is that I don't expect the refs to get 100% of calls correct. They're human. I expect them to get the vast majority correct, and when the miss calls, the misses are roughly evenly distributed. I think that's a pretty fair expectation.

Given that, sure they missed a few calls , but I didn't feel like they missed an overwhelmingly greater number in either direction. Officiating is not what lost this game for us.

If you only the general public knew just how whiney Fran actually is. Huge hypocrite and cry baby. You get a glimpse during games but behind the scenes is more of the same.
I did go watch the Iowa press conference on their HN network. Fran was complimentary to our team and said that the end of the game was a non-event. Maybe Garza did something, I wasn't watching close enough so I don't know. Anyway, no trash talk by Fran towards the Illini in the press conference.

I was impressed with Underwood's presser. Now as an Iowa grad, let me explain something about Fran. He is fiery and his rosacea doesn't help. He reminds me of Dantonio a little bit who looks to me like he always has a turd in his mouth. Fran just doesn't look likable, however, if you listen to him he is a straight forward intelligent guy. I have watched Underwood in some games and he is just as fiery as Fran. He admittedly said "that he and Fran are cut from the same cloth". I have to defend Fran though for taking his players away from the hand shake. If you watch it did you think you wanted to send your players down the line with three Illini assistants screaming at Fran? As your own coach said, "It is what it is".

Another thing that BU said and i believe to be true is that he has a good group of young men in our locker room. He recruits the right type of players on and off the court. The interviews and the connection between the guys seems really good. Regardless of what happens and i feel they will play great. This is a close tight knit group and is just another reason to root for them and also to expect them to win and play for each other. They are learning from the mistakes and getting better because imo they love the coaches, the team, their teammates and dont wanna let each other down. They know the lapses they had today and in the past but the important thing is to learn from them and get better and they have been doing that.
I remember some dbag on this board talking about locker room issues after miznoz loss. Didn’t buy it then.

tough but understandable road loss. They don’t quit and they’re gonna make more noise before it’s over.

It didn't look to me like Chin was barking at Fran; in fact it looked like he was looking right past him and ignoring him. Hard to tell who he was yelling at but I thought it was at Fran's son.

We didn’t like the dunk at the end of the game after BU said don’t foul. But the bad blood goes back to last year and has nothing to do with either of the games against them last year. I’ll just say Fran is a very big hypocrite

This is a very different Illini team from the last 10-12 years. For the first time in a long time, the team seems to be much better than the 'sum of its parts'. We're not that deep and have a few guys with some glaring holes in their game, but they play with much more consistency than would be expected. It seems in each of the last several games, we've had some guys with bad games, some bad shooting, some adverse calls, etc. but they just shrug it off and keep going hard. That is really impressive and a testament to Underwood and the staff.

For the tournament purposes, I think it means we're not going to blow anyone out, so the first round is going to be nerve-wracking. However, if we actually bring our 'A game' similar to 2nd half at Purdue, I think the sky is the limit. It's fun to root for these guys.

Their zone had a huge middle and I don't know why we didn't feed Gorgi there all day.

because they’re gonna lef Giorgi shoot 15 footers all day. Take a dribble closer to the rim and you got Garza who can defend 2 by himself with his size in that space.

great post-game with BU. Straight, doesn't mince words or make excuses. Like what he said re: locker room sentiment. Next 4 weeks and then next 4 weeks will be fun.
Just watched watched his press conference. I just love the way he handles himself. Gave Iowa the credit they deserved and mentioned their players by name, talked about lackadaisical play (might have used another word — maybe casual), but never mentioned Giorgi by name, and just shows the love he has for these kids. Compare that to a few other pressers by other coaches I’ve seen who act like they have no idea who plays for the Illini.
As to the whole “controversy” over the late game run out and dunk, get over it. A bit bush league? Yeah, maybe but Illini were still defending. If defense had backed off it probably wouldn’t have happened. But it did, and as a player if you don’t like it use it as a little extra motivation and beat them bad at home. And while, I live that Chin stood up for his kids, what he should have done is shake Fran’s hand in line and not let go and block him so he can’t move on, lean in and say “bush league end of the game dunk. Is that the classless BS you teach your kids?” And then move on and watch Fran go ballistic and just look at him like “what got into him?”.

True he had an off game, he also had to bump and attempt to handle an All American inside/out player for a large part of the game. Giorgi has brought way more to our team than what he has done to hurt us. His 4 turnovers and missed layup did not cost us this game...the critical foul calls against us at specific times did more than this.
wasnt just the lazy passes and missed bunnies . It was the pathetic defense he played on Garza. Im ready to see a bit more of Kipper. Im liken his fight

Ok, went back and looked. 18 seconds when Giorgi missed the layup and we were coming after them. How does everyone feel about Ayo trying to foul with time expiring and down 7? I just think it’s silly to be upset about the dunk.

It's very similar to doing a bat flip and dancing around the base path for 25 seconds after a home run. There is an unwritten rule that you don't do that. Some guys care, others don't. But everyone in basketball knows if you do that it's going to piss people off, just like in baseball.

the unwritten rule for basketball is you don’t do it if there’s clear conceding. Again, we sent multiple guys at the ball. If the defense is gonna play hard, the offense can too.

If the end of game shenanigans give us some extra bit of fire for the rematch, then by all means go for it Iowa dude.

Once the ball is in that deep, there are a lot more options than taking a 15 footer... especially considering the space they were giving us at the free throw line. Gorgi's proven he's pretty effective there (see last year).

Yeah, he did the jersey pop thing and mouthed off directly towards our bench. Hope he goes pro after this year and has a Sean May-esque career.
Might've been in retaliation for Feliz's jersey pop shortly before. Wasn't sure if Andres was taunting anyone on Iowa w/ that or not. Either way, whatever. 3 B1G losses and we get to host all three teams in C-U for revenge, starting this week w/ the turds.

Note the difference in BU's presser and Pitino's the other day. BU knew every player on Iowa and what they contributed and was very complimentary. Pitino, not so much.

Fran's a whiner, and I have a general disdain for the dude, but I did watch the presser, and he was very complimentary of several Illini by name. Also, saw a classic old joke on Twitter that made me chuckle: What do Iowa students and Illinois students have in common? They both got into Iowa.

I was around him at a big ten tourney game several years back, he is a hard guy to like even if you root for the team he is coaching

This was a good old fashioned big 10 game. The end of the game just shows our coaches (Chin) cares. In the end we take care of business at home we can win this thing. The league title goes through Champaign. Iowa is good 18 Weiscamp, 25 Garza, and Frederick 18. That is not bad. I get the feeling the return game might look a bit different. Let’s to tach from:

1) Georgi end of the game no brain farts
2) Kofi keep the ball up high stop bringing down low
3) Guards throw Kofi the ball more and earlier in the shot clock. UP HIGH!!!
4) Ayo I was going to say, shows you not so easy when a team puts size on you (Weiskamp is 6-6), but someone earlier said he thought Ayo hurt himself in the Minny game. I think he might be right? The tape on the shoulder and lack of even trying to take over at the end?

bottom line, we are good we played them tough refs, mouths, Fran, Idiots Out Wondering Around or whatever, they are good and so are we.

Side note Deon is tremendous as a game color guy. He bleeds Illinois and hates Iowa loved loved hearing his voice after the game.

exactly. If the roles were reversed how many of us on here would be decrying our teams lack of sportsmanship?

We’d be all like “hell yeah we dunked on Iowa for the win at their place f the squawks!”
I certainly would be

Iowa played like thugs down low and got away with multiple fouls in the post a minimum of 10 plays. It dramatically effected our flow and was simply horrible officiating.
Damonte I absolutely love him, but in the 2nd half he was passed the ball in middle of the zone and didnt even look at the basket! This has to be fixed, asap. He can hit a 8 foot jumper.. Go Illini

Nothing about this game surprise me....except...the deep drive this team has developed to never quit and never stop believing they will win and finding a way to get that done. Sure, it was inevitable that after fighting through 7 tough wins things would finally not go their way. That was almost a certainty...and in Carver Hawkeye my feeling was that the matchup would prove insurmountable for our guys. But one thing that was not insurmountable was their heart and determination...and that is HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE.. I see it as bright as the sun and I see the talent mixing, cooking and getting ready to be served a B1G title. This team is just that and just need to keep chopping wood and playing for each other and good things will happen. I hate seeing them lose, but I can handle them losing when playing competently and with the heart and determination we saw today on the toughest conference road in the country that is the B1G. Now, there is some payback to be done against the turtles.

This is the type of game over the past 7-8 years we would have lost by 20....this team refuses to give in and is capable of beating anyone in the country on any court
