Details on Zavier Simpson’s Suspension

#3
Zavier Simpson at Michigan got one game for running his car into a light pole at 3 a.m. and lying to the cops. No one’s talking about whether DUI was suspected or if a breathalyzer was administered.

Says the officer didn’t smell any intoxicants on his breath.....so I guess no need to check any further. I mean, it was only 3am and he lied about being the driver so why do a field sobriety test or anything? I’m sure he was just out blowing off steam in the AD’s family car which is completely normal....

Nope.

It was an educational situation.

Case closed.

If handing out credit for bogus classes to student athletes is an Institutional situation (UNC)....then driving the AD's wife's car at 3 am, I wouldn't think, it would be any concern to the Nc2a

Story

In summary, ZS wrecked a car owned by the UM AD at 3am hours after Ayo’s buzzer beater last month, lied to police about his name and initially said he wasn’t driving, was noted to be stumbling by police, but was only charged with driving too fast for conditions. Ended up having to sit out one game (Nebraska) before being reinstated. Lots to unpack here, sorry if this has already been discussed in another thread.

Car was registered to the ADs wife and he left the scene of the accident before returning on foot and acted like he wasn't involved. There are some more salacious rumors involved but those are the undisputed facts.
How this doesn't blow up in Michigans face, 🤷‍♂️...

No wonder Michigan appeared out to thin air in that recruitment lol

I think as far as student athletes wrecking cars in the middle of the night and leaving the scene/ lying to cops, Illinois is a very fragile glass house
It's the punishment we're examining, not the act. Smith was suspended for the rest of the season (~14 games) and by not meeting the requirements of reinstatement never played for the Illini again.

Michigan players getting in a car crash in 1996 is what brought the Fab 5 era of the program down, ended Steve Fisher’s Michigan career, and made them a basketball also-ran for a decade.

It also sent Mateen Cleeves to Michigan St and got Tom Izzo’s career rolling.

I found this part of the report interesting: "Officers noticed Simpson stumbling when entering the car "

As far as intoxicants, Michigan has had medical marijuana for several years, and the voters approved recreational weed last year. I'm not excusing anything or implying guilt, just saying that there is a high* tolerance for weed in the state, and Ann Arbor in particular. No idea if that was involved here, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

I'm also not surprised this is a non-story, given no one was injured other than a light post. Could have been a lot worse, but local policing is often pragmatic. Will be interesting to see UM explain away the fact that he had use of this car, which you know they will do. Nothing to see here....the NCAA will round up the usual suspects and slap penalties on a much smaller school. Just because.

*no pun was intended

In Illinois at least, you do not have to do the field sobriety tests if an officer asks. You do have to blow if they arrest you or your summary suspension period is doubled.
