Ancelotti has certainly won his fair share of trophies. And we'll see how much Arteta learned from Pep. It will be interesting to see if either manager is aggressive in the January transfer window. Top 4 is still possible for either team with how young Chelsea is IMO.

Chelsea shut down Spurs in their new stadium. Arsenal draw and United lose. A very good weekend for Chelsea. Now time for the holiday season that absolutely screw teams over.

I'd be curious to get other's take on here of the comments by Klopp and Mourinho regarding how packed the fixture schedule is this time of year: https://www.espn.com/soccer/liverpo...klopp-premier-league-fixture-schedule-a-crime
As a not particularly knowledgeable fan I like the greater exposure (more matches!) but it does seem over done. LFC had an average age of 19 playing reserves against AVL in the cup game and has had a total of 10 games in 30 days. And that's with one game postponed. At one point they were down to only one healthy CB. All in all a bit much since there's still half of the season ahead. I don't personally have a proposed solution but the league would probably be well served with a reevaluation of the year-end scheduling.

I read a piece on impending Champions League expansion adding an additional four games, either with larger group participation (6 teams) or quarterfinals played as a group stage. The article posited that CL participants might be excluded from the League Cup or the League Cup could become an under-23 competition. At first blush, the U-23 option seems like fun, as a fan.

U-23 option seems like a good idea. if only CL participants are excluded, i would argue why not all PL members?

It's just too many tournaments going on at the same time (FA Cup, League Cup, CL/EL). I would think if Champions League were excluded, they would also exclude Europa League.

No Premier League matches this weekend as the 4th round of the FA Cup will be taking place. The only matches involving Premier League teams on both sides include Southampton-Spurs and Burnley-Norwich City on Saturday with Bournemouth-Arsenal on Monday.

With how their match ended today against Everton, I'm not surprised that Watford is in the relegation zone. 2nd straight match Watford has lost on a late goal. It was made worse today as Everton played with only 10 men for roughly the last 20 minutes of the match before Theo Walcott scored in the 90th minute.

This weekend begins the new winter break for Premier League sides with only 8 teams playing this weekend and the remaining 12 playing during next weekend. One perk of this is that every Premier League match over the next 2 weekends, which began with Everton's 3:1 win over Crystal Palace this morning, will air here in the states on either NBC or NBCSN.

Liverpool is 6 wins from closing out the EPL trophy and have their next 4 matches against the sides currently in the relegation zone + Bournemouth, 2 pts clear. Man City has matches away at LCFC and away at ManU, along with 2 others, during this time. If Man City drops one and LFC wins all 4, the Merseyside Derby at Goodison on 3/16 could be even more intense within the trophy on the line.

Actually if both Man City and Liverpool win out those next 4, then the team in red would have a chance to clinch the title in the Merseyside Derby at Goodison. Either way Liverpool is still likely to break Manchester United's record for earliest clinch date, which was April 14, set during the 2000-01 season.

Today's Manchester City-West Ham match at the Etihad was postponed due to extreme weather conditions in the UK. Heavy rains that have led to more than 200 flood warnings being issued across the country and winds expected to reach up to 90 MPH led to the match being called off in the interest of player and supporter safety.

Manchester City banned for next 2 UEFA competitions due to breaches of the Financial Fair Play regulations. However, Manchester City is appealing the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

If the appeal is denied, based on the current standings, Sheffield United would be in the final Champions League spot with Spurs in the Europa League spot and Wolves, Everton, and Manchester United close behind.

they submitted their appeal pretty quickly because they knew it was coming. the appeal is on grounds of bias against manchester city.

The decision is likely going to be fast-tracked before the first round of next season's Champions League begins in July. What I'm going to be interested to see is how this City decision would affect what potentially what would happen as to who gets the additional European football spots. Manchester City is set to face Aston Villa in the EFL Cup final in two weeks and are still alive in the FA Cup tournament. If City were to win either one or both of those, would those spots potentially go to the teams in the 7 and 8 spots in the Premier League table?
