According to teamrankings.com we’ve now got a 5% shot of winning the conference. Maryland has 44% chance and MSU and Penn St both around 20%. Which is fine- finishing top 4, getting the double bye, and getting a top 6 seed in NCAA tourney would still be a terrific this year. But if we’re going to make a push at the conference title, it starts here. This game and at Penn State next Tuesday night are both critical to keeping any hope of the regular season title alive.

Bartovik disagrees. Our odds of winning or sharing are greater than 5%. A win on Tuesday would make things interesting.

At this point B1G title is Maryland’s to lose. Our next 3 games will be monumental for us to hang in there for the top spot and really even to stay in the top 4. It sure is fun to have important games at this time of year.

I can guarantee you that we will not shoot 3 for 28 from three as we did in EL in early January.

I agree we will be better than 3 of 28....but after Friday nights 2nd half shooting woes....it may not be much better......surely we won't have 2 games in a row where we shoot that poorly.... :noidea:

Quoting it because liking it didn't seem like enough.

This is extremely correct in my mind.
No doubt. Just watch any of our games. It is extremely obvious that our passing is the worst part of our game. There is a reason we dont get many open looks and 90% of our shots have a guy in our face. Its not the offense itself, its the lazy, poor, predictable passes that cost us. It was much worse last year. Hopefully they get it fixed in short order.

Lazy passes (Ayo often guilty of this) and passes not in shooting pocket which is difference between open shot and forced or no shot at all. Agree completely.

We are bad against zones because the team is really bad at passing.
After watching the Curbelo tape from last night....I was thinking how he can personally breakdown zone with his penetration and passing. We have dre and Ayo who are pretty good at penetrating but are prone to get stuffed on a forced shot vs kicking or dumping to an open man. Curbelo would have helped us beat Iowa and Terps, IMO.

Well, we know Izzo has a disdain for playing zone defense but after the Maryland debacle, we know that our guys are very weak against a zone press, zone defense, and at shooting free throws. There are about 50000+ coaches across the country who can bring Underwood and his staff up to speed on how to attack the first two problems, and likely the third also. These kids have too much talent to not swat zone defenses away like a gnat...yet they looked like they had just seen the rise of Godzilla when Maryland showed a zone. Zone presses and zone defenses need fast ball movement, a determination to get the ball in to a good passer in the lane (Giorgi), good perimeter shooters (Trent, Ayo, and Griff) and a presence at the rim (Kofi). This team is perfect to attack the zone defense yet they were clueless....and that is on BU only. Trying to drive the ball against a zone defense is suicide as the ball moves many times faster and makes them work a bit rather than stare into your frightened eyes. Those eyes should be lit up with opportunity as open shot opportunities are presented in spades everywhere. Against Maryland, heck, against any zone, the Illini seldom attempt to get the ball into the paint which is ALWAYS open and the key. It makes the defense collapse leaving open shooters, Geogi one on one, or Kofi going to the rim. I expect Izzo to at least present a zone for a try and I hope to see some sort of plan for the Illini to move the ball quickly to beat it either in full court or half court......it isn't rocket science.

I Love this team but it feels like we are taking on a wounded dog with Michigan State. State is
in a tail spin and I think we caught them at a bad time.

Disagree. We only have 2 players on the roster who are "shooters" on the scouting report, Trent and Alan. We actually get a ton of open looks against the zone...but most of our team is not confident of making them so they don't take the shot. Which of course is the whole reason we see zone in the first place.

I loved watching dre attack quickly in the 1st half against Terps. He got like 3 layups in a row splitting their D. Our "7 sec offense" was clicking with drives and open 3s falling early...and then we slowed down with the pressure. Just dont understand why we dont scheme a simple dre drive with dump off for Kofi layup or dunk against the zone.

Pretty simple when you are on pace for the fewest number of 3's per game--5.6 over the last 10 years, you are inclined to see a zone. Now you see why staff was so desperate for a 3 point shooter in the transfer/grad portal. Oh my if for only Woldentsae.

Hey, Tyler Underwood is shooting 40% from 3.

Put Giorgi at the free throw line against a zone and good shots will be available if the ball is moved with passes instead of dribbling. We have no one who will penetrate and pass out to an open shooter.

Re-watched the Maryland 2nd half(yuck), but we did beat the zone a couple of times and we missed shots. Kipper missed a layup, Ayo missed a couple of jumpers. The most effective way was Giorgi setting a screen for Ayo or Feliz to get in the lane for a mid-range jumper. Giving it to Giorgi or Kipper at the free throw line for a jumper is no good.

As long as Giorgi doesnt shoot it from the free throw line.

Good news. Rutgers overcame an 18 point deficit to defeat Northwester in OT.
The table is set for us to end Rutgers 16 game home winning streak - ROAD WARRIORS.

Coach Izzo does not like social media :)
“I’m gonna tell you something, guys — and I really mean this from the bottom of my heart,” Izzo said, via ESPN. “If there’s any Michigan State people out there that are abusing some of my players on that frickin’ Twitter … I’m sick of it. OK? I’m sick of dealing with what I gotta deal with on that.

I agree with this and would add that we need to speed things up when facing zone defense. We are so slow and deliberate thawe allow them to adjust and maintain optimal spacing. Beating a zone requires speeding things up to create gaps....gaps make defense collapse when the offense drives to the gaps and that leaves someone open for a shot. This was painfully evident against the terrapins.
