Ayo Dosunmu: MRI showed no structural damage

last night, about 4 minutes before tipoff, my wife called me (she's on the road for work). A phone call from her right before an Illini game means it's important (she wouldn't call just for fun at a time like that...she knows I'm not going to be paying attention), so I immediately answered. Her aunt was admitted to the ICU due to a medical condition, and they weren't sure how bad it was.

It was a real bummer, and I really lost focus on the game, though I still watched it. Even when we were getting our butts kicked, it was a little relief from the stress of knowing a sick family member and not being able to do much. Then what happened to Ayo was a second kick in the gut.

This morning, we found out that she's stabilized and is actually doing a bit better. Certainly not out of the woods, but a positive step. Then this news on Ayo. Really, it's been the best possible result of the day after yesterday.

It's crazy how much of a rollercoaster life can be. Really happy for Ayo and his family, and Illini nation has his back! Now going to work for more positive days just like i'm sure Ayo and the team will.

Life can be a rollercoaster my friend, my philosophy is to never get too high or too low. it’s never as good as it seems or as bad as it seems. Glad Ayo is going to be OK. Can’t help but wonder if Fletch’s vigorous strength program helped save Ayo from surgery

HUUUUUGE!!!!!

More than anything, I am happy for him. Has to be such a relief for him knowing the knee is sound.

So, so, so very happy for Ayo. I’m not going to be falsely altruistic, I’m happy for all us fans too. If we can split these next two road games, it will be huge moving forward. Do it for Ayo, set him up for a triumphant return!

Guaranteed nothing in this life....live and play each play as if it were your last.....I think if Ayo had ended his season and or his career last night with the knee injury....he could have said I was giving it my all at the end of an important game for my team and myself...no regrets.....the good lord isn't done with Ayo on the basketball court just yet....he has more to accomplish.....very happy for him, his family, and Illini nation

I think there was some luck involved here but I was also wondering about this. If you follow fletch’s social media you’ll see a ton of notjust strength work, but also balance, flexibility, core and single leg emphasis. even with the luck aspect,i choose to believe the work he puts them through helped.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful news!! I am so happy for Ayo and his family. He is an outstanding young man and a true leader on this team. I loved the sideline story about Ayo during the second half of the game last night where he was telling everyone something like "I don't want to be seeing any more of those threes. Take the ball to the hoop!" Great leadership and it lit the necessary fire under our guys to take it to the hole so we could battle back.

Rest up and hurry back Ayo. We need you!!

Your so right about that. Some days are just bad days. The day after the Mich St. loss and Ayo's injury a friend of mine suddenly died of a heart attack. I was thinking holy crap, how much worse can this day get? And then when I read the news late yesterday that Ayo's injury wasn't as bad as it might have been, it was like the weight was taken off my shoulders a bit. I don't even know Ayo, but the news of his diagnosis made me so happy. People have a weird capacity to form relationships with others, even if they're strangers. Hope to see Ayo back running the show soon.

Was watching the MSU game with my HS son. He commented as Ayo went down that ".......wow, his pride just took a bit hit." We both thought he just slipped. I then saw Ayo immediately limp off the court with the help of two individuals. Neither of us instantly thought about a significant knee injury. Ever since Joe Thiesman's compound fracture on Monday Night Football, I refuse to re-watch sports injuries on TV, but the real-time slip didn't look that serious to me. And there was no stretcher involved. Did anybody see his leg bend/twist in an irregular manner?

If I couple that with the positive tweet by Ayo, I think he's coming back sooner rather than later. Naturally, the medical staff will be cautious but I'm not expecting a multi-week absence. In fact I'm holding out some optimism (10% chance) that we'll see him off the bench on Saturday. D1 athletes are in incredible shape.

I am also hopeful it wont be an extended injury, but I'm not sure what slip you were watching, I get not wanting to see replays. It looked bad in real and slow time to me. He slipped, leg then buckled, the twisted oddly outward and underneath him and kinda collapsed. I, along with my also young daughter, immediately thought blown-out ligaments.

SOOOOOOOOOOO-happy that is not the case. absolutely love this kid, everything about him is top shelf.

I also couldn’t bring myself to watch replays. Couldn’t watch Kevin Ware, couldn’t watch Gordon Hayward, couldn’t watch Paul George, couldn’t watch Ayo. The Mettler physical therapist on the Werner show yesterday certainly seemed to think that the way Ayo went down he would have expected there to be a significant injury.

Nice references........yes, exactly those. I never watch any of those injuries unless I'm seeing them real-time on TV (or in-person). I certainly could not have been a doctor.

Thanks for the update. Watching as I was, expecting to see a game winning shot go up as the clock hit 0.0, I saw only a slip/fall and the ball bounce to an MSU defender.

OK --- the Big Dance is now back within view. We just need to get the "loss monkey" off our back!
