For any of you that are steeped in AAU ball, I'd love to hear your thoughts about the various circuits and how you would rank them all. Obviously EYBL is at the top but it sounds like Nike (A, B, C), Adidas (Uprising/Gauntlet) and UA have multiple levels. Then there's Prep Hoops, and elite AAU programs that have their own leagues. Where's the best place within driving distance of Central IL to catch a little Huntington Prep, La Lumiere, Oak Hill, Prolific Prep, Montverde, Mac Irvin, etc.

High-scoring @BooWilliamsAAU wing David Jones took his second trip to Champaign on Sunday for the IU game. He grew up with Andres Feliz in the Dominican. And he's an #Illini target worth knowing going forward.

Can anybody provide info on Jones? Outside his Dominican background, I don't know much.

You just mixed in a bunch of schools with MIF.

Jones is extremely underrated by the recruiting services. Kentucky is sniffing and they wouldn’t be involved unless Jones is a blue chipper. Encouraging that we have a strong connection through Andre Feliz

He is a Gemini, he likes stiped black shirts opposed to solids for the svelte look, licorice, spaghetti with extra garlic bread and walks in the park with anyone else's yappy dog like a Pom-Pom or ChiPoodle. He however does not like Pina Colada's... :ROFLMAO: :thumb:

You seem to be describing this guy.

Which is a subset of the players we recruited who we thought we could get.

If you think that there is no one in the top 20 that Underwood would want you're crazy.
And what has that to do with the rankings of the players we got?

#63
Because you said you don't care about the rankings.

I'd like to win it all. That will all but certainly require higher ranked players
I said I don’t care about the rankings of the players we got and you interpreted that to say we weren’t interested in top 20 players. Doesn’t compute!

What challenges are you talking about?
Getting kids into U of I that meet NCAA qualifications, but not University standards. Antwan January was one, the recent football player’s name escapes me at the moment, but there seem to be several every year. Most we probably never hear about unless they are really high level guys. It’s nothing new. It’s been an issue coaches have to deal with. It’s one small reason Illinois is a tougher place to coach.

Seems like most of our qualification issues have come from the NCAA rather than Illinois Admissions.
There are always some of those. The ones that bother me are the guys that sign elsewhere (meet NCAA requirements )because we turned them down. Maybe I misunderstood the OP’s intent. I took that to mean getting into Illinois, not getting in anywhere.

Does anyone on this site think the admission standards should be lowered to standards of other schools for player admission?

getting 3 or 4 borderline kids in here isnt going to threaten the integrity of the school on the academic side.
I appreciate your honesty, but there is no sport more important than the integrity of the school. I will always be more proud of my degree from Illinois than any sports team.

The sooner that Universities realize athletic programs are the most difficult program to get into at their respective university, the sooner this conversation topic can go away.

There is no reason that any athlete should be forced to double major at a University. Every player on the Illinois basketball team is more skilled, more prepared and more qualified coming into school than (most likely) anyone on this board was in the field they chose when enrolling (or declaring a major). The real shame is that these players aren't acknowledged for that and allowed to pursue the field the same as everyone else pursues the career they are most passionate about.

Athletic ability is a unique and valid form of intelligence. Imagine the impact of requiring those who want to pursue an academic degree to also pass a strenuous athletic exam. How would we react to a student being denied the opportunity to major in art history at Illinois because his or her mile time is too slow?

They aren't forced...they chose to go to college man. College is supposed to be about education. Most of these guys won't make the pros. What do they have when their eligibility is up? Someone needs to start minor league football and basketball leagues. Those that don't want to learn wouldn't have to. They will be poorer for it. Lots of places you can't even coach high school without degree

This isn't strictly true. As long as the NBA won't allow 18 year olds into the league fresh out of high school, these kids are forced to look at other options. College ball is a lot better vetted than international leagues to date. That might change in the future, but for now they are herded into college whether they want a degree or not.

Now, I agree with you on the benefits of a degree and the fact that they get to have one without needing to pay for it is amazing. But that's a different discussion.
