Illinois 78, Iowa 76 POSTGAME

The deal is this, even if the shot goes in, as a coach, you talk to the player and say look, in that time and score situation we’re taking a wide open layup only. We don’t need that shot.

honestly i wasn’t in love with Ayo’s layup against the press either. Presses want turnovers or quick shots that act as turnovers. We played into their hands twice.

Trent's shot was after Ayo dove on the floor and saved a ball when Kofi poked it away on an entry pass.

I, too, like that mentality. It was in rhythm on a transition play from a normally good shooter.

Unfortunately, Trent sucks at shooting right now. For that reason it's a bad decision to me.

Great win. Really happy for Kipper and Feliz having big games on senior night.

I thought we took our foot off the gas for a stretch once we had a big lead. Seemed more focused on running clock than attacking. Allowed Iowa to get back in the game.

Except for Iowa uniform I really have no problem with Garza. He is a really good player that plays hard. Some of their other guys are not hard to dislike though.

Just to add an observation, when Kofi sat with a 15 pt. lead or so, we should all have expected Iowa to storm back. He is the most important player for the team on both ends because of the threat he brings, not necessarily his actions. Iowa knew they could go to Garza at will...and they did. Or go inside out to open shooters....and they did. If Kofi is in the game with only a couple of fouls, Illini might win by 20. He got two stupid fouls he had no business even contesting the play and must eliminate those from his game. He has to be on the floor when needed.

Yes, but at the next level - he's going to get his flailing arms ripped off and shoved down his throat. No way they put up with what he gets away with past college.
Probably right but I think he will be a good pro still. Whatever it takes to get him out of an Iowa Jersey

Different shot there had to be 24 seconds at least left and only one and a half in the game at most.

Correct, Frazier's 3 was taken with only 8 seconds into shot clock or 22 remaining at the 1:33 mark. We were also up by 6 points. At that point and up 6, the clock is your opponent. Didn't need a 3 at all. A 2 pointer and another 18-20 seconds off the clock would have sealed it. Just not good BB IQ on that shot.

It was good to see Illinois figure out how to play against the Iowa zone. Great job by the coaching staff prepping for what they knew was coming. Lots of passes with purpose, flashes to the high post, screens at the top of the key, and drives to the middle. It was great to see how much energy and enthusiasm Kofi played with. He did a great job on both ends. BU waited a little too long to bring him back at the end. Garza should be national player of the year hands down. Toppin does not play the competition Garza did. Ayo is one of the most important players in Illinois history. He helped to change the culture and is one of the most clutch players to put an Illini jersey on.

-Love beating Iowa, don't want to play them again Friday.
-Will root for Iowa in the NCAA tourney like I do all big ten teams.
-Garza will be a load against some unsuspecting team in the tourney, guy is a gamer
-Very cool to see Garza's dad high five ayo after the game, the guy loves hoops
-Garza took pics with orange Krush after (hard to dislike the garza guys after all that)
-Thank you Ayo for everything you have done for Illinois basketball
-Dre has entered into my all time favorites at Illinois , has a nick Anderson edge to him

No Illini i remember talked more to player that Derek Harper did. I sat close and i loved it. There was a lot of that going on tonight. It was intense and Ayo reminds me a little of him. Ayo is so quick end to end like Harp was. I hope Ayo can get to be the player he was. Ayo is starting to remind me of him more and more.
Had the same thought yesterday. Closest Illini comparison I can think of.
