NCAA Tournament Canceled

Just a question. In 2009 to 20010 during the Swine Flu pandemic, did any sporting events or anything else get cancelled? It infected over 60 million people in the United States and caused over 12,000 deaths. But I believe the NCAA tournament played on.

I'm not sure you're making the point you think you're making. Setting aside the fact that H1N1 had a lower mortality rate than what the best guesses for COVID-19 are, it still infected 60M people (disproportionately young ones, for an influenza virus) in the US and continues to be a major problem in many parts of the world! Maybe some serious preventative measures would have been a good thing!

On a bright note, for the guys on the team that are graduating or leaving for the big league, having their final game be a fantastic winning effort against a hated rival in front of a sellout sea of orange... It could have been worse.
I'm sad but glad they got to go out as winners.

I’m not a stats guy (barely made it through stats at Altgeld :)). But found this interesting:

It is discussed by Alex Tabarrok at https://marginalrevolution.... in a March 12 blog entry

"Now here is the most important point. It’s the size of the group, not the number of carriers that most drives the result. For example, suppose our estimate of the number of carriers if off by a factor of 10–that is instead of 20,000 there are just 2000 carriers in the United States. In this case, the probability of at least one carrier at a big event of 100,000 drops not by a factor of ten but just to 45%. In other words, large events are a bad idea even in scenarios with just a small number of carriers."

I though we had weathered the curse of the Chief. This, my friends is the curse of the Kingfisher.

I know it was the right decision, but I sure am sad, depressed, grieving, etc. regarding the cancellations. I also feel so bad for the kids who will never get to experience the rewards for all the blood sweat and tears they put into the season. These few weeks (conf tournaments and March madness) truly are my absolute favorite weeks of the year. I'm not exacgerrating. really bummed right now. Praying the world gets through this sooner rather than later . Blessings all.

IHSA cancelled all their events.

Bummer for these schools that literally dont make it this far ever in their histories.

I think that's one of the most important issues. A doctor at a major hospital in my area said they got 300 tests, which is tiny compared to the need.
By contrast, I talked to a friend in Germany, and they said they can go through a drive-through and get tested (and at no cost).

'Merica!!
Not 'Merica. CDC. Big difference ;).

Similar comments made already, but here’s the bright side. Every single good or great season for the Illini in my lifetime has ended with a loss. This season ended with our BIG Freshman of the Year stuffing the possible National POY to win a game against the whiniest bunch of cornfed, inbred, a-holes we know.
And better still, that Kofi stuff of Garza at the buzzer will be Garza's final, indelible, memory of three stellar years of playing college ball. He'll always remember the final true shot he took getting swatted back in his gob, and the subsequent flaccid airball he tossed as he fell to the floor with Kofi towering over him. When he's my age he'll remember that.

Mmmmmm. Donuts.

With no testing kits, poor containment, denial, etc., the US is in bad shape with it, and now they've got to do what they can...but man, what a bitter pill. Gonna be a couple hard months as this thing burns through, and takes its toll on vulnerable populations.

I personally wish the show would go on. It would be good for the country and if you asked the players
and staffs, I guarantee they would vote to play. They would be playing and traveling in an extremely
guarded environment. Will they be as safe elsewhere? Don't know. Two sides to every coin.

And then a player tests positive, then what? Should the NBA keep playing and just let each other get sick?

this isn’t about player safety. This is about containing the spread. These tournaments involve brining dozens of players from totally opposite parts of the country, placing them in a third area, and sending them back. Now repeat that 100’s of times. That’s how you spread disease.

Should we stop all domestic travel also?

It's all about the math. 1X2 = 2 and 2X2 = 4, but 50X2 = 100. Individual travel and small group travel doesn't have the risk for spreading disease that larger group travel does. Much domestic travel will stop. A large university called and cancelled their appointment with me this week and said that all meetings had to be cancelled for the next couple weeks at a minimum. We were headed to a national bball tourney with 1,000 teams but it was cancelled. I'll really be sad if this causes the cancelation of part, or all, of AAU season.

Got my new gear in the mail today with intent to wear it tomorrow in Indy and with any location luck, to the NCAA. Randomly suggested on Twitter I’m going to wear it tomorrow and post on social media to thank the team. Glad for all to join me. #fightingillinifriday

Posting from Seattle one of the epicenters of this. Been quietly wondering for about a week how long the midwest was going to be in denial. We have been on “social distancing” for a few days and lots of stuff out here was closed.

Italy is dealing with hundreds of hospitizations and bad choices on early containment. Seattle, NYC and finally the nation is trying to stop that from happening here.

Unreal and sad to lose the tourney but the right choice. Go Illini.

How do we start a petition to still have the selection show? Can we at least have an official record of who would have made the tourney this year? That's half of what we Illini fans needed to see
Or at least a final T25 ranking this Monday

So few are being tested that they cannot guarantee the players’ safety. If this was golf and the players could be kept separate, playing could be considered. This is not the case here when using a common ball, bench/chairs, water bottles, rim, backboard, etc.
Not to mention all the straight-up physical contact
