Ayo Dosunmu has big decision to make about NBA

I heard something positive about Ayo possibly staying for another year today. I’m no insider but if true the chances are well a over 50%. Will be interesting to see how this plays out

Here’s my thing, if you were projected to be a second rounder based on regular season games and not tournament games, why wouldn’t you come back to NCAA. The draft isn’t going to be normal this year and if you already have a question mark on your name I think it would be best to come back. Then again if you can guarantee yourself good money then go. I think the tournaments would have helped but honestly the biggest thing that would have helped Ayo is the predraft workouts, which aren’t going to happen.

I was under the impression that barring something catastrophic happening that he was going to the draft. I prayed that knee injury wasn't catastrophic & thank God it wasn't. Now we dealing with something that robbed us of the Big Ten tournament & NCAA tournament. That is definitely catastrophic. With that being said if he thinks he can get guaranteed money in the 2nd round he is gone. They would be a top team if he returns but there is always an injury risk as we almost found out.

The CBS guys seem to like him. Have him at #32 in yesterday's mock. At the end of the day it doesn't mean much, but FWIW, these guys are usually solid sources when it comes to the draft.
Think what you're saying. The "seem to like him", yet still have him in the second round.

GMs aren't stupid. They have the same questions as the ones that have been brought up on this board. He's got a couple of glaring holes in his game. That's no secret. This is a two way gamble. Will some team feel that are enough physical traits there to take a flyer early or will all GMs feel that he'll be there at pick 50 or above...or if he goes undrafted, try to sign him as an invitee to their training camp?

The question for Ayo....is it more of a gamble to venture into a roll of the dice situation and at worst case end up getting paid in the G- League or overseas OR take the route of going back to school to better his draft position....which may or may not happen?

There's no downside in coming back outside of the potential of injury. The upside is being on a potential final four team, but no pay.

The upside of declaring is getting a team to take a flyer and snag him higher than anticipated in the draft, where he'll make over 1M dollars over the life of the first contract. The downside is not getting drafted and end up in a league, that isn't the NBA, making a minimum.

He's not wrong with either decision, which is a good thing.

Seems as if he may be better off coming back instead of going to possibly playing in the G league with players trying to get in the league themselves.

It's also an overall weak draft year, which benefits him.

Liking him and being content with his skill set (which they are not as of now) in order to offer him the difference from 2nd rd $$$ to 1st rd $$$ is plain business decisions at its best. Ayo will play there, but with his handling/strength/shooting ability, the ??? are valid for big $$$.

I think Ayo's gone... and good for him. I hope he goes in the first round of the draft. If he goes second round, some team is getting a GREAT value. I think it's good for all parties for him to go pro now. For the Illini program, they need to get used to having great players who leave for the NBA after one or two years; that's what the elite programs do. With Ayo gone next year, Curbelo and Miller will have the opportunity to step right in and play, without having to be in Ayo's shadow for a year. What an amazing player Ayo turned out to be. He was special this season, good as advertised coming out of high school.
I agree with this to an extent. If Ayo stays, With the departures of Griffin especially, but also Jones, I think Curbelo and Miller will have plenty of opportunities to step in and make a difference. Just my 2 cents

I read an article earlier this week looking at the draft over the last handful of years and about 95% of draftees received an invite to the draft combine (some received an invite but did not attend).

Will they even have the combine this year?
Will the draft and combine be postponed?
How will that impact some of these player decisions?

That would mean that 60 / 450 = 13.33% player turnover on an annual basis...

From what I've read, it's higher. The average NBA career is somewhere between 4 and 4½ years, and the distribution is skewed. The elite guys have very long careers, barring injury. Taller positions turn over less. The closer you are to borderline player, the shorter your career tends to be. And guys just joining the league are likely to get a couple years to judge their potential if their contract isn't guaranteed. End of the bench once you've been around a couple years is a pretty risky place to be. Mind you, it's a risk I'd gladly take given how much they make relative to most working stiffs....

Not sure if you guys saw Underwoods quotes today. Said Ayo is in a tough spot, sounds like he is on the fence. Thinking it has to be 50/50 at this point

I think he should bask in the glow of the spotlight another year. Buy an insurance policy against injury. Of course, I'm not familiar with how easily that's done
nor the expense. Being 66 I have a different
perspective. He's a good kid from a good family. He'll do fine in life.
