Garza only has one year of eligibility remaining. He was going to do this regardless.

One of the questions Kofi will need to answer is whether he trusts our staff to continue his development. Judging from the outside, it looks like we've helped him make an incredible jump in one year. A lot of that is due to Kofi's hard work and natural abilities. But at least some of the credit should go to the staff for working with him and putting him in positions to succeed. The staff is obviously very invested in his continued growth and development. I don't think there's any guarantee he will receive the same kind of individualized attention if he is undrafted or stashed in the G-league.

Bottom line with Kofi is that from a basketball standpoint, it's pretty much a universal thought that it's an absolutely terrible idea. The minimal chance that someone will take a flier on him, still buries him in the G - League. That's just a fact.

It makes absolutely zero sense to leave school unless he just hates school, which could entirely be the case. That's the question.

His draft status is poor, his game needs a ton of work....he's not ready. If this is his way of dropping out of school(for whatever reason) and he's merely searching for any job playing basketball, then....it is what it is.

Bottom line is this is why the NBA needs to go back to drafting kids out of HS, getting rid of the one and done. If you elect to go to college, it's a minimum of two years before you have draft eligibility. Then, this new transfer rule would make sense, just because the year over year turnover would be lessoned.

The option, in bold, that Garza had in his letter about returning is what lacked in Kofi's declaration.

Garza is clearly just testing the waters. Don't have that feeling with Kofi.
Too literal, he's a kid. His brother said he may well come back, and his brother is who he'll listen to.

Big difference with Garza and Kofi.

Garza doesn't have much room for improvement. Any improvement he does manage will not offset the issue of age, and a much thicker 2021 draft class. If he has NBA goals this is the year to make that happen.

The quote from his brother in that Trib article made me feel less likely that he’s coming back. “Opportunity does not wait around. It would have been nice to stay one more year in college and get extra development.”
Not good.

That said, what's the opportunity that's not waiting around?? He's not going to get drafted. If he's listening to his brother and not the coaches....that would be very unwise.

Nothing against Underwood (although he certainly screwed up royally by keeping Ayo and Kofi on the bench until the UK game was out of reach--cost the Illini a virtual Elite 8 berth)
You lost me here.

The sooner basketball brother gets to play pro ball, the sooner non-basketball brother gets access to money. It could be that non-basketball brother is blind to reality.

Newest Mock Draft I saw yesterday didnt even have Garza until 56th pick second round. No Ayo or Kofi.

If Kofi comes back and makes as big a jump as Garza did in a year he will be a 1st round pick in next years draft, also Ayo will be back he is not on DW level yet ant DW stayed 3 years

What Graza needs to do is play the stretch 4 for his NBA dreams to come true ... where could he go to do that when Kofi and Ayo come back?
