I believe the Wisconsin game will give us a good read on the season. Do we come out tough and ready to do battle for 4 quarters with a good team or are we a better, more experienced version of a mediocre team?

A Quick Depth Chart Update

Roderick Perry didn't even come up with the idea to transfer, but the FCS star is "kind of a godsend" addition for the #illini defense.

Lovie Smith has reasonable concerns about his team playing during a pandemic but said, "We’ve been going through a lot of different stages of learning about the disease, how do you cope with it, best practices."

Adding former Fisher standout Jaden Jones-Watkins was just one of several roster moves made official Wednesday by Illini Football

Illinois will be 3-6 this season. Lovie cannot recruit. PJ Fleck is robbing his back pocket (https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/...hes-gophers-2021-class-into-top-5-nationally/). Lovie -- when he arrived at Illinois -- was asked by writers "how is college different?" Lovie said, "No difference. It's all Xs and Os." In the meantime, Lovie found out you can't bring guys in on Tuesday to try out after he ran nine quarterbacks off, and -- worse that he can't recruit with the line "I know how to get you to the NFL." Oh, and he didn't know you need to go for it on fourth down in Nebraska with 2 minutes left in a game he might have -- maybe, maybe, maybe -- won... Bring back Bill Cubit...

We have to wait and see, as we have been on Lovie. I am just about equally encouraged and discouraged, though we are not developing a powerhouse, for sure. Mike White did for a bit, but, errr. Well, you know. One thing I am confident about, Bill Cubit (though I like the guy's enthusiasm) was not the answer.

Unless recruiting improves dramatically it kinda looks like this season—one where we will be lucky to go .500–is going to be Peak Lovie at Illinois.

Definitely a winning record this year. We'll be better than last year on both sides of the ball. [Thanks, Roderick!!!]

I assume you mean both 2020 and 2021, given the new/special Covid "eligibility" rules. (I don't see much of a drop-off in 2021.)

Ug. And after the game he said he would do the same thing (punt) again. One of my most depressing Illini memories.
