Minnesota 41, Illinois 14 Postgame

Tip of the hat to QB #7 Taylor who seemed to play his heart out. Looked to me he had some nerve pain in his forearm running down into his fingers. Too bad coaches couldn’t even call a timeout for him, let alone put in someone else for a play or two.

The late hit / targeting by DB #2 was blatant. Also there was a helmet/helmet roughing the passer foul on a DL that negated a 3rd down stop. I suspect these fouls really hurt the will of the team.

The most frustrating thing, to me, is the inability of these coaches to install corrections or adjustments during the game. Today our defense was very poor at setting the edge. Opponent could run outside the tackles at will. Fixing that, I think, is a combination of technique and formation. Our coaches seem to help with neither.

I said in the game thread, we are as bad as we have ever been. We may have more talent than we have had at times, but we can’t stop anyone and today we couldn’t score against the second worst defense in the league. Minnesota is not a good team and they just kicked our a**. I don’t see JW firing Lovie this year because of Covid, so we have one more year before we begin yet another rebuild. Then of course we have to give the guy 4 or 5 years to see if he can do anything, and another decade of my sports fan life just got wasted. The product on the field is an embarrassment to the university, its fans, and its alumni. Yes, I’m angry. I’m glad Lovie is a good man and I had high hopes, but he has shown me nothing at all to indicate he has a clue how to fix what’s wrong with this team. His salary has been a colossal waste of money and it’s time for this to be over.

Lovie helped us recover from a bad few years and I am thankful for his commitment to the program. Littyville is phenomenal, but...and a big BUT...we are not showing progress. We need new leadership and I would imagine that even Lovie knows this. Been a tough year with COVID, but you can’t fail to show up like this. Not good.
With all do respect mycitymytime, I don't see any recovery. We are as bad as in the Beckman era. Can him now. Start the search for a proven coach.

I was crucified on here last year for saying that this team was terrible at game planning, worse at game managing, and downright embarrassing at clock and challenge management... but that it was all covered up by "football luck" and a few players making big plays.
That is just the lead up to and in-game weaknesses.

It is also clear that his staff is not good at coaching players up. (Teaching). He's had big "name" staff members, who are known for being goof PLAYERS, but not for being good teachers. And that shows up, as players individually and/or collectively do not improve, minus a player here and there.

He has elevated recruiting to a degree. I appreciate that. I do. He's been a good guy. I appreciate that. But he is overmatched leading up to and on game day. Badly. And he hasn't staffed to improve his players. All of that has to be addressed, somehow.

I'm watching the Notre Dame vs Clemson game. Those boys know how to wrap up and tackle. Unlike our guys who try to knock the opposing players over by hitting them or try unsuccessfully to strip the ball.

It really blows my mind to see Division 1, big ten players who can't tackle. But hey our coach is defensive genius.

Perhaps. You may be right. We were in pretty bad shape then. Our talent level is better, but the coaching is not keeping up with that.

Where was Ford in this game ? You cannot blame all this on the playing a 4th string QB. The secondary, too many penalty killers on both sides of the ball , and play calling have been consistently bad this season. We also show our lack of depth on both offense and defense.

Have to thank FIOS for not showing the game. I have the BTN overflow channels, but no Illini game on the one I DVRed. Rarely watch live in any case. Don't think I will look for a replay. PSU loses again as well. 0-3. IU 3-0.

Is it basketball season yet.

If you stink, play calling is irrelevant. Of course I did not see the game. Penalty killers? We got that hockey team starting?

In our last 51 games under Lovie, we have a record of 14-37. Does anyone know if that is the worst 51 game stretch in Illini football history?

I don't doubt these players... but I truly believe they have been placed in a very flawed system... and on a weekly basis, don't have a solid plan of attack.

I praise Lovie for his elevation (not to anything elite, but still elevation) of our recruiting. 2's became 3's. Some 3's became 4's. (In recruiting).

But once here, we need teachers, motivators, solid strategists and game planners... and then game managers.

If Lovie can oversee this? Great.

If he insists on BEING those things himself, or insisting on continuing to trust the staff he assembled... ie... changing nothing? Then he has to be relieved of his post, so that we can get someone in who can take advantage of our upperclassman driven team next year (with the eligibility reprieve).

this year will be the lowest pressure recruitment ever (as no one will run out of eligibility).
Sadly this may be the most right time to move on... (least impact on recruiting).

It's going to be so hard to rebuild this train wreck
I disagree. The foundation is there for an up and coming coach to come in and go to a bowl game in year 1. I could see someone coming in and pulling off what Jeff Brohm did his first couple years at purdue. It'll definitely take awhile to take this program to a 8+ win level though.

Nope (as in nobody else). Zuppke's last 6 seasons were 17-27. Moeller (6-24-3), Valek (8-32), and Beckman (16-28) never made 50 games.
