This doesn’t fit perfectly in this thread, but J Leman on Tay and Piper yesterday is worth a listen. J Leman spent an hour talking about how a defense reads an offense. If you watched the game, he often called plays out before they happened. I don’t see that happening on our D right now. Players are out of position because they don’t know where they are supposed to be for the situation in front of them. Either the players aren’t watching enough tape to understand or the coaches aren’t teaching them how to read the plays. Either way, with the experience on this team and the coaches being what they are, I don’t see it getting better in year 6. If they haven’t figured it out by now they are not going to.
Sounds like a conversation JL might have with JW over a beer........

funny you should say this! In July of 2018 I was working an internship and counting down the days for football season to begin. I would google “Illini football” in my spare time (which was considerable at this particular job) and read articles from 247 or ESPN as they popped up.

One day I stumbled on an article that talked about the history behind college football message boards and some of the cool stories connected to them. In that article it mentioned that Robert Gates, who at the time was president of Texas A&M, would frequent one of their message boards to talk football, give out little tidbits of information, and most importantly, monitor the pulse of the Aggies fan base. This article was helped me discover Illinois Loyalty and I’ve been a regular ever since then.

I don’t post too much but I do really enjoy reading what people here have to say. I think this is a great place to gain some insight into what passionate Illini fans are thinking and it would only surprise me if there were NOT higher ups in the DIA and athletes who come by every now and then to see what’s being said.

If anybody is interested in reading the article, I’ll link it below. Go Illini

Funny story! Sounds like Gates had a little too much time on his hands. Tax payer money well spent 🤪

Take the top HS coach in Florida. Make Him your head coach. The next top 5 can be his coordinators. Bring in an older coach as a consultant to the staff. Get every possible recruit out of Florida. Cannot be any worse than where we are today. At least we might win some recruiting battles!
That sounds like Cubit.

Both teams now 3-0, and they face one another a week from this Saturday in Buffalo. Winning coach gains a leg up on the other for the Illinois HC job!!

Kent State - averages 44 pts/game
Buffalo - averages 53 pts/game

Assuming each coach could bring 12-15 transfers to Champaign in 2021. Those players could then replace the MAC level recruits on our existing roster.

I think we need a coach from the midwest and who has had success recruiting from OH, MI, WI, and IL. Bring in assistance coaches (who actually coach) who have had success recruiting from TX, FL, and CA.

The options from the MAC aren't as bad as my gut first told me.

McElwain at CMU built a good program at Colorado State, was booted from Florida very quickly after two conference title games in his first two years in the SEC, and seems to have brought CMU back from a bad situation. He may be among our best options that is under the radar across college football.
Leipold at Buffalo was a hugely successful coach at Whitewater and it looks like his talents are transferring over to FBS. I could see giving him a chance.
Lester at WMU is young and up-and-coming, has Illinois roots, and is doing decent so far following after Fleck.
Chuck Martin has Illinois roots, and comes from the Brian Kelly tree. Continued the national championship success at GVSU, was a coordinator under Kelly at ND, and has resurrected Miami (OH) from a really dark place at the cellar of the MAC.

Not bad. Which means we would probably pick another MAC coach which would be a complete embarrassment.

Honestly a coach that can get us to to 6-6 four out of five years would be a huge improvement. We haven’t had a coach with an overal winning record in 30 years. That’s got to change.

Sadly, few thought Lovie was a path to greatness. We were just looking for a path to respectable. 5 years later we have cemented our position at the bottom of the B10.

Don't know much about Lester as a coach, as he inherited a pretty talented squad from Fleck and a team used to winning. The others are all really solid coaches. McElwain was with Saban for a while - Leipold would be interesting as would Chuck Martin. Gonna be interesting to see what we do.

Would you rather have one of the MAC coaches or someone like Babers?

We've tried several different types of coaches over the years. The only one I don't think we've tried is a young up and comer coach. My memory doesn't go back as far as some of you though.

Like many have said on here I want a coach who has the ability to coach with a good scheme, wants to prove something, and can have some success in recruiting talent.

#316
I’d take a guy like McElwain over gaudy stats in the MAC all day every day. Stepping up into the B1G isn’t just guiding a bigger program, it’s recruiting and playing at an entirely different level.( Although maybe not so much at Illinois 😐)

But it’s also squaring off against a slate of veteran high level coaches week in and week out.

I believe it because I've heard first hand. Talk the coaches off the record and they will tell you how Lovie recruits. Look at recruiting since Ward and Clark left.....really nothing going on. There is a reason we try for so many transfers every year, its easier than grinding on the recruiting trail.

This is true. The staff member I know can't believe the lack of effort in recruiting. When you've never had to do it, what makes you think that at this stage in your career you'll become an aggressive recruiter?

#318
Don't take my word for it. There are pictures of Lovie out on the recruiting trail. Unless you define recruiting differently than I do. Even the transfers have to be recruited.
It's his "follow up" that stinks. He doesn't feel the need.

I saw this article on ESPN website this morning. Is Penn State still out of control? No surprise, but it is muddy as to who said what, when, and what it meant.

One thing I think we might be failing to factor in is Whitman. What I mean is I think he has a very long leash, but even he understands that the next coach he hires has to have more on field success than Lovie.
While we might be thinking take a flier on a young MAC coach, he might be more inclined to go for someone who has a track record of success.

The problem is it is harder to get a coach with p5 success to consider us in football, basketball sure its a good job nut football stinks.

Wouldn’t be the first time he’s been accused of covering something up.

Edit: To keep this on topic, does an 0-4 (so far) season and swirling allegations cause Ped State to can Franklin?

He was never able to get over the hump and take the East...and seems to be trending in the wrong direction.
I am sure their patience is much shorter than Whitman's is.

On the other hand, who can they get that would be an upgrade? Their fan base would be in complete rebellion if they hired a Turner, Zook, Beckman, Cubit, or Smith. Maybe they can get Urban to un-retire. His way of running a program would be a good fit for them.

If he's gone and we are serious about recruiting, Andy Frank should be looked at. He had success at Vanderbilt as their recruiting coordinator. At Penn State, he has helped them be one of nine programs to sign a top-15 class in each of the last three years. Over the last five, they are one of 12 schools to claim a top-20 class each season.

Unfortunately, it seems we are not.

Recruiting is so limited in 2020 that there is not much one can do to improve one's situation. The "Illinois" name doesn't mean much to most of these kids and that is basically what they are using to recruit with, in these times. I guarantee that everyone else is using the same methods and so name recognition becomes more prominent.
Maybe so, however the Illini face planting after the Wisconsin game did not help. Lovie tries to rely on his past when his name was somewhat relevant, and that does not sit well with HS Coaches or players. He has not recruited well since he has been here and the staff he surrounded himself with is not great with recruiting, minus a couple. Lovie does not get a pass, as he has run out of those here in year 5. I have my doubts that a miracle turnaround this year sparks the recruiting trail for the Illini due to Lovie's approach and inability to even close. Now beat OSU!!
