How was Zook able to attract talent with these terrible facilities?

There's always some reason why we can't recruit well or win - facilities can't compare with OSU's, HS school coaches don't like us, we don't have enough fan support, not enough administration support, etc. yet other schools face the same or worse conditions and still manage to succeed.

Excellent chart. I'll have to go back and look at my old pre-season football magazines, but I thought we used to pull in a good 8-10 kids from the state pretty much every year since I started collecting them in the 70's, and I assume most if not all those kids were top 30 type prospects. If...

To expand on your math point, it's a whole lot more expensive for a school like Illinois to recruit in Georgia, texas, etc than it is to recruit chicago or St Louis. Illinois is not texas in terms of HS talent, but it's a whole lot better than Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, etc. Ignoring the talent...

That is a prescription for failure. You have to take the time and make the effort to build these relationships. There are no guarantees this approach will work, but it is guaranteed that not even trying will result in failure.

Sorry, but an inability to even offer a 4* player 2 hours from campus is pretty inexplicable.

The staff may not like it, but part of the job when it comes to recruiting is building relationships with HS coaches around the state, especially when you are a bottom feeder like Illinois has become. I don't know the whole story, but if what you are saying is true, the smart thing to do would...

If we didn't offer a 4* in-state lineman, then that points to other problems I guess

I've been bashing our recruiting, but definitely happy with our last few commits. Hope we keep the momentum rolling!

    Tony Yates passes away

RIP Tony; without him Lou would have had a much more difficult time rebuilding the basketball program. His wife was my guidance counselor in HS as well; very nice lady

If it's Trevor Timmons it will be a headscratcher. He may be a good talent, but based on his offer list we could hold off for a while waiting for bigger fish (if there are any that is)

This has been the case forever -very rarely have nationally recruited players out of IL gone to UI. And yet until recently we were the primary destination for the next tier of instate players. And generally, this level of talent with some kids from OH and the South and California mixed in were...

From the beginning of time through the Beckman era, this has been Illinois' bread and butter recruit - solid 3* players from the Chicago/Indy/St. Louis triangle. You mix in a few skill players from Cali or Florida or Texas or Ohio and a few 4*'s from in-state and you generally have a...

Coaches want the best for their players and they want their egos stroked. It's pretty obvious Lovie and his staff aren't into stroking anyone's ego, so take that off the table. With regard to what's best for their players, we are surrounded by programs that develop their players well (Iowa...
