I do enjoy seeing so many on here with the knee-jerk reflex to defend the program, regardless. The fact that some can defend what is clearly a VERY weak hire provides pretty clear evidence that these folks would literally cheer ANY hire Beckman could make.
I knew that with such a long wait...
Generally speaking, if you are going to bring in a guy as co-DC it is a good thing to hire a guy with more of a track record. Saying that you or I know nothing about him isn't a good thing.
Basically, you use the co-DC position to either (a) hire a proven strategist who can really help with...
The DL was the strongest unit on the defense by the end of the season. Ward was incredibly raw at the start of the season, didn't really have a clue. By the end of the season he was a force that other teams had to scheme around. Bain was a former OL who developed into a nice DT over the season...
Um... anyone who was paying attention knew that Golesh was a great recruiter. He was Beckman's recruiting coordinator at Toledo for three years when they recruited very well, and had already established a reputation as an up-and-coming coach.
Let's be realistic. If Phair had natural recruiting skills, he wouldn't have been hanging on in the NFL for so long as a scout. He would have been coaching college football.
This isn't a home run hire. This isn't a double. This isn't even a clean single. While I agree that he can't be worse as...
Yes, that ship has sailed. But that doesn't mean we can't point out that this was a complete FUBAR move to upgrade the staff.
No personality problem with Colby. And he did a great job molding that group into the strongest unit on the defense - despite losing Powell and Nelson.
Did we upgrade recruiting? No evidence of that (zero recruiting experience)
Did we upgrade the DC position? No evidence of that (zero coordinator experience, and not much coaching experience overall).
Why the heck didn't we just keep Colby?!?!?!?!
Mike Phair Asst coach experience (NFL)
2008 Asst LB coach, Seattle
2009 Asst DL coach, Seattle
2010 Defensive asst, Seattle
2011 DL coach, Chicago
2012 DL coach, Chicago
2013 DL coach, Chicago
2014 Asst DL coach, Tampa Bay
3 years as an NFL position coach, 4 years as an NFL asst position coach...
Phair was a grad assistant at ASU. He has no major college coaching experience. A guy who has bounced around the NFL a few years, not even the lead DL coach at Tampa Bay. And this is the big upgrade???
I'd rather have Colby to be honest. If you can't improve, then might as well benefit from...
No, I'm too stuck on multiple factors contributing to home field advantage, and only a few being a significant factor in this case.
I never made any claims about a bigger crowd being an advantage. Rather, there isn't anything lost from a crowd perspective in moving from Memorial Stadium to...
