Playing Ty at PG also allows the team to switch on defense against any ball screen, which is a huge reason why our defense can be so smothering. You lose that with a traditional PG.

    Love that reaction from Belo!

Cool gif. But Rose was way more explosive.

I agree with the sentiment. But I’d take pre-injury Derrick Rose as best athlete to ever play PG.

    Looking ahead to 2021-2022

What people are saying is that we hope BU does not sit more talented but less proven freshmen for less talented but more trusted super seniors to win early season games that may not mean much. I absolutely think Trent and Damonte add value on the court. But we haven’t had a player with the...

    Looking ahead to 2021-2022

I agree with the overall sentiment that BU should play the players that give the team the best chance of success this season. But I think you are missing a nuanced point. The freshmen (and even Hawkins and Hutch) may be able to offer the team things that no one else on the roster can. But if...

Now we need a bizarro Tipton gif.

Brad Underwood season wrap press conference

I don’t disagree. The point I was trying to make is that our defensive system seemed to rely on the ability of Trent and other guards to fight over the top of screens with minimal help. I don’t like using that approach exclusively because (a) I think it wears down our players and (b) teams that...

Brad Underwood season wrap press conference

I’ve been very happy with BU. I think he’s done well in roster construction, developing a good culture and making tactical adjustments year over year. But to nitpick for a moment, I’d prefer to not rely on simply out-talenting teams game in and game out. I thought we were overly reliant all...

The key is having at least one of Belo and Ayo in the game at all times. They both get Kofi easy buckets and they are the two guys who can make things happen offensively. If they both start together, you increase the chance of both getting in early foul trouble. When Belo comes off the bench...

    Illini Basketball 2020-2021

Underwood and Co. have built an amazing team culture! You see it here, during games, and in post-game interviews. I absolutely love seeing players celebrate the accomplishments of their teammates as much, if not more, than their own. And having fun in a long and grueling season (made even more...

Illinois 73, Ohio State 68 Postgame

The Illini defense is making opponents take difficult shots on most possessions. With Ayo, Curbelo and Kofi, we are able to get good shots on a lot of possessions. You can always run into a team that gets hot and makes difficult shots. But consistently getting easier shots than your opponent is...

    Illinois 76, Michigan 53 Postgame

A few things that really stood out to me in this game that I love about this team: 1. Gang rebounding on defense where all five players aggressively go after the ball. Damonte has always been a good rebounder. Curbelo is pound for pound an amazing rebounder. Grandison’s insertion into the...

The bolded is not how sports work. If being an excellent decision maker was just a matter of listening to your coaches, then the vast majority of players would be excellent decision makers. You don’t want to coach Curbelo’s aggressiveness out of him, because that is what makes him special. You...
